However, their sustainable utilization faces significant challenges due to habitat degradation and modernization. This study aimed to characterize the ethnobotanical utilization of mangroves by coastal communities within Bunaken National Marine Park (BNMP) and its surrounding small islands, while exploring their potential for food and medicinal bioprospecting. Data were collected through questionnaire surveys, in-depth interviews with informants, and field observations within coastal communities in four locations such as Bahoi, Likupang Barat District, North Minahasa, Sondaken, Tatapaan District, South, Alung Banua, Bunaken Archipelago District, Manado, and Mantehage, Wori District, North Minahasa Regency. The data were subsequently analyzed descriptively, followed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and heatmap visualization. The findings revealed that specific species such as Acanthus ilicifolius and Avicennia marina occupy central roles as sources of food and traditional medicine, emphasizing the close integration between subsistence needs and community health. Correlation analysis and PCA indicated that the categories of food, medicine, and firewood represent the dominant dimensions of utilization, while cultural functions and species knowledge serve as secondary differentiators. Location-based variations underscored the heterogeneity of utilization practices, with Sondaken being more prominent in firewood use, Bahoi in ethnomedicine, and Mantehage in biodiversity knowledge. These findings highlight the necessity of mangrove management that extends beyond ecological conservation to include local wisdom as a foundation for bioprospecting, thereby supporting food security, health, and the well-being of coastal communities. Thus, this research significantly contributed to the literature on mangrove ethnobotany and provided a scientific framework for community-based bioconservation strategies in Indonesia.

Abstract

Learning in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0 requires students to learn how to integrate concepts at all levels of organization and complexity as well as synthesize and analyze information that connects conceptual domains. A metacognitive approach will instill the skills the current generation needs to interact in society and the world of work. The aim of the research is to describe students' responses to the genetics learning module with the Mapalus philosophy approach to metacognitive skills. This research applies development research methods. Media experts' responses to the module were valid (78%), while material experts' responses were very valid (85%). The genetic concept module developed using the Mapalus local wisdom approach produced good responses from students both in terms of use and cognitive assessment results. The module also raises students' soft skills in their use, namely cooperation, leadership, the ability to divide tasks in groups and present the results of group work. The module developed is also able to improve students' metacognitive abilities. Students' ability to understand problems increased from 65 to 80 (maximum score 100). The ability to perform calculations increased from 55 to 70. The ability to make problem solving plans increased from 67 to 75. The Genetic Concepts Module with the mapalus philosophy and metacognitive approach can be applied in schools.

Abstract

ABSTRACT. Bee-derived products are increasingly acknowledged as valuable functional ingredients because of their abundant phenolic and flavonoid content; yet, the biological potential of honeycomb or nest extracts is still inadequately investigated. The current research examined the bioactive characteristics and multifunctional properties of a tea formulation enhanced with Apis dorsata Binghami nest extract. The total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations were measured with Folin–Ciocalteu and AlCl₃ colorimetric tests, respectively, with results reported as equivalents of gallic acid and quercetin. The antioxidant capacity was examined by DPPH radical scavenging, anticancer activity was determined by cytotoxicity against human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cells through the Presto Blue™ assay, and antidiabetic potential was investigated via α-glucosidase inhibition. The formulation demonstrated significant quantities of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, which were associated with pronounced free radical scavenging activity. Cytotoxicity experiments demonstrated a concentration-dependent decrease in MCF-7 viability, with IC₅₀ values reflecting moderate potency relative to cisplatin, although above the potency of crude extracts noted in previous investigations. The extract exhibited notable α-glucosidase inhibitory actions, indicating its promise in glycemic management. Collectively, our data underscore the potential synergistic interaction of tea polyphenols and nest-derived bioactives in augmenting antioxidant, anticancer, and antidiabetic effects. This is, to our knowledge, the inaugural integrated study assessing the multifunctional bioactivities of Apis dorsata Binghami nest extract prepared as tea. The findings highlight its promise as an innovative functional beverage and nutraceutical option, offering scientific validation for the enhancement of underutilized bee resources in combating oxidative stress–related ailments.
