Abstract

Indonesia’s policy of regional expansion, initiated after the 1998 reform and formalized through Law No. 22/1999, was intended to address regional development inequalities. However, it has often led to land-use changes that pose risks to agricultural livelihoods, especially in newly established regions such as Pangandaran Regency. This research investigates the dimensions of livelihood vulnerability, the roles of institutional and policy frameworks, the composition of livelihood capital, the sustainability of livelihoods, and the prevalence of poverty in Pangandaran. Employing a quantitative descriptive approach, the study surveyed 378 farming households across the Mangunjaya and Padaherang Sub-Districts. The analysis reveals that sensitivity is the most dominant factor in livelihood vulnerability; environmental legal frameworks are the strongest among institutional and policy elements; financial capital is the most prevalent form of livelihood asset; land-use-related ecological factors are the most vital to sustainability; and housing conditions emerge as the key indicator of poverty. These findings emphasize the intricate interplay between institutional change and rural livelihoods, and they point to the critical need for cohesive policies that promote sustainable agriculture amid the ongoing challenges of regional development.

Abstract

Coffee is an agricultural commodity with high economic value and promising business opportunities, driven by the increasing demand and interest of consumers. One area with significant potential for coffee development is Gunung Geulis, where forest land has been converted into coffee plantations using an agroforestry system. This system is expected to maintain the ecological functions of the area, particularly hydrological services, while also providing economic benefits for the surrounding community. This study aims to examine the implementation process of coffee agroforestry farming in the Gunung Geulis area and determine its sustainability status. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The analysis was conducted using the MDS-Rapcoffe method in R software to assess the level of sustainability and identify key leverage attributes influencing it. The coffee agroforestry farming process in Gunung Geulis includes upstream subsystems, cultivation subsystems, marketing subsystems, and supporting subsystems. The results show that in Jatinangor and Cimanggung Sub-districts within the Gunung Geulis area, the sustainability values are 64,55% and 66,73% respectively, which are categorized as moderately sustainable.

Abstract

PD. Nugraha Putra has a high level of potato seed production; however, its sales volume has not yet matched its production output, thus creating a gap between production and sales. Thus, product, price, place, and promotion aspects are marketing mix factors that influence farmers' decisions. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of these factors on potato purchasing decisions from PD. Nugraha Putra. The method used for the assessment was quantitative, using survey techniques. Primary data were obtained from 50 user surveys conducted by PD. Nugraha Putra using a convenience sampling methodology. The data were analyzed descriptively and then followed by linear regression using SPSS software. This study showed that two variables—product, price, location, and promotion—had a significant influence on respondents' purchasing decisions, both simultaneously and partially.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the cost structure of baby bean farming in Lembang District. This research was carried out by sampling using Cluster Random Sampling, so a sample size of 96 people was obtained from a total population of 2,349 baby bean farmers. The data was analyzed using the Revenue Cost Ration to analyze income. The results of the research show that the types of costs for baby bean farming show that the largest percentage of baby bean farming costs is labor costs with a value of Rp. 16,200,000 (35.34%). The high percentage of costs for this work requirement is due to the large number of workers needed in farming activities from land processing to harvest. The total costs for baby bean farming are IDR 45,834,601 per season per hectare with revenues of IDR 88,380,000. This means that the baby bean business is worth cultivating but its productivity must be further increased. Based on calculations, the baby bean farming income per hectare per season is IDR 42,545,399,- with an RC ratio of 1.93. An RC value > 1 indicates that the baby bean business carried out by farmers is profitable.

Abstract

The expansion areas have experienced a decline in agricultural land use and a decrease in the number of farming households, which has an impact on livelihood transformation. The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in agricultural land use and the vulnerability of farmers' livelihoods in the expansion areas, namely Mangunjaya Sub-district and Padaherang Sub-district of Pangandaran Regency.  This research uses a quantitative descriptive method with a spatial analysis approach and an interview technique of 378 farmers. The highest land area change in Mangunjaya sub-district was gardens by 44% while in Padaherang Sub-district it was water bodies by 48%. The highest vulnerability is pressure with a value of 4.65 where there are indicators of agricultural land conversion. Changes in agricultural land use show an impact on the vulnerability of farmers' livelihoods as evidenced by disasters on agricultural land, a decrease in agricultural production and diversification of livelihoods other than the agricultural sector. Comprehensive efforts involving the government, community, and private sector are needed.

Abstract

The native Pasundan cattle breed from West Java, Indonesia, delivers essential economic and ecological benefits to the local rural communities due to their exceptional adaptability and resilience. Unfortunately, the full potential of Pasundan cattle remains untapped owing to restricted access to breeding technology, insufficient institutional support, and minimal community participation. This study investigated the key drivers of community roles and community empowerment levels in Pasundan cattle breeding in West Java, Indonesia. Using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) on data collected from 191 farmers in Sukabumi and Ciamis, this research examined six variables: Pasundan cattle characteristics, farmer characteristics, breeding technology, supporting institutions, community dynamics, and community roles. The findings revealed that breeding technology, farmer characteristics, and community dynamics considerably influenced community roles, while Pasundan cattle characteristics, breeding technology, and community dynamics directly impacted community empowerment levels. Community roles significantly influenced community empowerment levels. Furthermore, community roles served as a solid mediating variable, linking key factors such as farmer characteristics and breeding technology to community empowerment levels. Despite the lack of direct relevance of supporting institutions, its alignment with grassroots efforts remained essential. This study stands apart from earlier research by combining socio-economic, institutional, and technological perspectives to establish a specialized framework designed for Pasundan cattle farming needs.

Abstract

Urban agriculture is the practice of carrying out agricultural activities within urban areas. Projects serve as one of the tools to address economic, social, and environmental challenges occurring in cities. More specifically, urban farming projects are implemented to enhance food supply in urban areas, improve environmental quality, and empower local communities. The urban farming program in DKI Jakarta Province is guided by the “Desain Besar Pertanian Perkotaan tahun 2018-2030”, which sets the target of utilizing 30% of green open space for productive purposes and fulfilling 30% of the demand for vegetables through local production. This study aims to analyze the implementation of urban farming projects by assessing their financial and economic feasibility, as well as identifying their role in supporting women’s empowerment in Cengkareng Barat and Duri Kosambi sub-districts. The research employs descriptive analysis, cost benefit analysis (CBA), and the Likert scale. The results indicate that urban agriculture programs in Kelurahan Cengkareng Barat dan Duri Kosambi have been implemented in accordance with local government policies, although challenges remain. Financial and economic feasibility analysis shows that the programs are viable, with positive Net Present Value (NPV) and a Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) greater than one, meaning that the benefits outweigh the costs. Socially, urban agriculture contributes significantly to women’s empowerment by providing additional income, enhancing technical skills, building self-confidence, and encouraging active participation in community groups. It also strengthens women’s roles in environmental sustainability through eco-friendly farming practices.

Abstract

The sustainability of palm oil agribusiness was a strategic issue that connected economic, social, and environmental aspects in its management. Plantation practices and the palm oil industry contributed significantly to national economic growth and farmer welfare, but in reality, this activity was often associated with deforestation, land degradation, and social conflict. The importance of integrating various aspects of sustainability with agribusiness as a system from farmer perceptions produced priority elements that needed to be prioritized. The purpose of this study was to analyze the determinants of sustainable palm oil agribusiness development. This study was designed using a quantitative method with a survey approach. The sampling technique used proportionate stratified random sampling with a total of 249 smallholder palm oil farmers as respondents. Data processing was carried out using the Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis tool approach. The results of the study showed that the evaluation of modeling findings highlighted a significant influence of farmer rationality on the performance of the agribusiness system and sustainable palm oil agribusiness, as well as a significant influence of the performance of the palm oil agribusiness system on sustainable palm oil agribusiness. Meanwhile, in reality, the test results showed that farmer characteristics did not have a significant influence on any variable. Furthermore, the level of sustainability of palm oil agribusiness was perceived by farmers as more important in order from the social, environmental, technological, and economic dimensions. There was a need for cooperation and support from various parties to achieve and improve the sustainability of palm oil agribusiness, both from the fulfillment of input, production, handling of results, marketing, and supporting services to ensure its sustainability.
