Abstract

The persistent claim by New Atheists that belief in God merely functions as a placeholder for ignorance—commonly referred to as the "God of the Gaps" (GOG) argument—has significantly influenced contemporary discourse on the relationship between science and religion. This view asserts that the more science progresses, the less necessary God becomes, thereby reducing divine agency to an explanatory tool for unresolved phenomena. This article aims to critically examine the logic and epistemological assumptions behind the GOG argument, especially as articulated by figures such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens. Employing a qualitative method through critical literature analysis, this study draws on primary texts from New Atheist thinkers and philosophical responses from both Western and Islamic traditions. The analysis incorporates logical critique, especially identifying fallacies such as appeal to ignorance, false dichotomy, and strawman argumentation, and integrates Islamic epistemology, particularly the distinction between rational-metaphysical knowledge (‘ilm al-ma'rifah) and empirical knowledge (‘ilm al-ma'lūmāt). The findings reveal that the GOG argument relies on a reductionist worldview that fails to account for the metaphysical dimensions of reality. As a contribution, the paper offers an Islamic philosophical framework that transcends the false dichotomy between science and religion, proposing a coherent epistemology rooted in tawḥīd that sees science as a means to understand—not replace—divine order.

Abstract

Religion and power are two inseparable aspects in Islam. In fact, power itself is a vital component of religious duty, as human well-being cannot be fulfilled without it. Therefore, Al-Maududi emphasized the importance of this issue, which he articulated in his theory of Islamic governance. This article will discuss the philosophy of law in Al-Maududi’s theory of Islamic governance. Based on library research, qualitative data, and a descriptive-analytical approach, the following conclusions can be drawn: first, Al-Maududi’s theory of Islamic governance is unique compared to other theories due to its balanced concept of sovereignty, neither excessive nor dismissive. Second, this theory is supported by fundamental principles of governance. Third, the theory is further supported by three essential institutions that Al-Maududi formulated: legislative, executive, and judicial. All of this demonstrates the significance of both religion and politics in Islam.

Abstract

The issue of faith is the most vital and decisive matter for human beings and must be studied earnestly especially in this modern age of rapid transformation that has brought change to every aspect of human life. In a globalized era marked by a materialistic worldview, faith has weakened and is increasingly absent from human life. Against this backdrop, Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi has made significant efforts to link faith with human existence and to respond to the threats posed by materialism. Through a qualitative content analysis based on library research and the framework of contemporary Islamic theology (‘Ilm al-Kalām al-Jadīd), this study arrives at the following conclusions: First, Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s efforts to integrate faith into daily life are evident in his articulation of the essence of faith and its impact on individuals and society. Second, his critique of materialism includes a clarification of the nature of science and an exploration of the relationship between faith and psychological well-being, reason, freedom, and human actions. Third, he emphasized that faith is a fundamental foundation of Islamic humanism

Abstract

The Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia compiled the concept of Religious Moderation based on the teachings of various official religions in Indonesia, so that Religious Moderation deserves to be called the middle ideal concept of religion and is expected to overcome extremism and radicalism in the name of religion. The term moderation used by the Ministry of Religion has historically originated from secular (non-religious) culture incorporated into the thinking of Indonesians whose majority of the population has known the term middle with wasathiyah in Islam. This is the importance problem to re-examining whether the concept of Religious Moderation compatible with the concept of wasathiyah in Islam? How is the concept of Religious Moderation of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia viewed from the concept of wasatiyah in Islam?  The research method used is library research with a critical analysis approach. The results of this study include: first, moderation is not the same as wasatiyah; secondly, Religious Moderation when placing itself as a counterradicalism in the view of Islamic wasatiyah has been at another extreme with the dominance of Western thought.

Abstract

This article examines Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas’ interpretation and application of Quranic verses as foundational principles for his conception of the Islamization of knowledge, primarily drawing from his work Islam: The Concept of Religion and the Foundation of Ethics and Morality. The study investigates how al-Attas’ theological reception of Quranic verses contributes to the development of kalam jadid (new kalam) within the context of knowledge Islamization. The research employs al-Attas’ interpretation of theological verses as its material object, while utilizing the framework of new kalam as its formal object. Through the Living Qur’an methodology, the study analyzes the significance of al-Attas’ engagement with theological verses throughout his scholarly corpus. This qualitative investigation combines observational and library research methods to present a systematic descriptive-analytical discussion. The findings are as follows: First, al-Attas employs at least 14 Quranic verses with theological reception as the basis for formulating new kalam, emphasizing three agendas—change, development, and progress—all rooted in divine principles, which frame the discourse of the Islamization of knowledge. Second, in terms of practical reception, al-Attas’ interpretations can be observed in the initiatives of one of his ideological successors in Indonesia, Hamid Fahmi Zarkasyi. These include institutionalizing his thought through the establishment of University of Darussalam (UNIDA), the Center for Islamic and Occidental Studies (CIOS), and Program Kaderisasi Ulama (PKU) or cleric cadre program. In the perspective of the Living Qur’an, these initiatives represent efforts to enliven the Quran beyond its textual tradition, extending into a civilizational thought of new kalam institutionalized for broader impact. This progression begins from Quranic abstraction and reception, leading to the formulation of new kalam, and further towards enlivening both the Quran and faith (iman) simultaneously. This study makes a significant contribution by integrating Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas’ theological thought with the concept of new kalam, relevant to the Islamization of knowledge. It expands the understanding of how Quranic theological texts can serve as a conceptual basis for advancing progressive Islamic intellectual discourse.

Abstract

This study examines and compares the concept of nafs in the works of two prominent Paripatetic Muslim philosophers: Ibn Sina and Ibn Bajjah. Both philosophers played important roles in developing the theory of the soul in the Islamic philosophical tradition. Though their views are often considered to be influenced by Greek philosophy, particularly Aristotelianism, this study seeks to demonstrate that their concept of nafs is an original contribution with a strong foundation in the Qur'an and Sunnah. Using a qualitative approach, the study collects data from the primary works of both figures as well as relevant secondary literature. The analysis reveals key differences between the two philosophers. First, Ibn Sina divides the types of nafs into three: the vegetable soul, the animal soul, and the human soul. In contrast, Ibn Bajjah analyzes the nafs more simply, focusing on its power. Second, regarding the immortality of the nafs, Ibn Sina's view is more comprehensive than Ibn Bajjah's, which limits immortality to the mind and the nafs natiqah. Third, regarding the perfection of the nafs, Ibn Sina emphasizes its perfection as a whole, whereas Ibn Bajjah limits it to the context of active reason.

Abstract

In the context of Islamic higher education, human resource development is also key to the implementation of teaching, learning and overall active relationships. IHRD is closely related to sharia. Each law has its own main object. The main object of Islamic sharia in general is to create benefits for mankind. Usury is forbidden to safeguard the interests of the weak and poor from exploitation by the capitalists.. Studies on the existence of IHRD in universities, educational institutions and many human empowerment institutions are carried out massively for the sustainability of the education system in the future. Therefore, in building IHRD with the foundation of the Islamic worldview, it is necessary to practice what is used as a form of employee development with a process that runs continuously. New problems, new procedures, new equipment, new restraints and new positions always arise in a dynamic organization, as for the steps that can be taken to create a higher education IHRD by means of mental, spiritual, educational and teaching worldview Islamic education and providing economic knowledge based on the Quran and Sunnah.

Abstract

Sigmund Freud was a figure who had a wide influence. He explained that religion originates from human thoughts. This article aims to further explain Freud’s theory of the origin of religion and analyze it through the perspective of Kalam Jadid. This research is qualitative research with a literature study type. The data obtained are then analyzed interpretively, comparatively, and historically. Following the assessment process, it was discovered that the following points encapsulate Freud’s idea of the genesis of religion. First, totemism is a sort of religion that dates to early tribes. Second, monotheism is one of the faiths that have evolved from earlier ones. Third, people invented religion to get over emotions of helplessness and terror when confronted with difficult life circumstances. Therefore, religion is a type of neurosis as well. According to Kalam Jadid, there are several flaws in Freud’s thesis. There is no hard evidence to back up Freud’s claim that totemism was the first religion. Freud’s premise that God does not exist is also the foundation of his theory. It is implied that Freud disregarded the idea that revelation is a source of knowledge, and that people are inherently religious and have a spiritual side.
