Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the insecticidal activity of bark extracts of 35 plant species belonging to four families (Clusiaceae, Lecythidaceae Meliaceae, and Sapindaceae) against the cabbage head caterpillar Crocidolomia pavonana. Extraction of the test plant materials were performed with maceration method using ethanol and methanol continued by counter-current distribution separation in ethylacetate and water. Bark extract preparation of each plant species was tested against C. pavonana larvae by leaf-feeding method at concentration of 0.25% and 0.5%. Second-instar C. pavonana larvae were fed extract-treated broccoli leaves for 48 hours, then were presented with untreated leaves until the surviving larvae reached the fourth-instar larvae. The number of dead larvae was recorded. The phytochemical test of bark extract of Calophyllum soulattri was done by qualitative method. The results showed that the bark extracts of C. soulattri (Clusiaceae), Barringtonia sarcostachys (Lecythidaceae), and Aglaia tomentosa (Meliaceae) exhibited good insecticidal activity. Methanol extract of C. soulattri barks possessed strong insecticidal activity against C. pavonana larvae with LC95 of 0.21%. This extract showed positive response in alkaloid and triterpenoid qualitative tests. Further studies are needed to identify insecticidal compounds in those active extracts.

Abstract

Diversity of insecticide activity of Calophylum soulattri Burm. F. (Clusiaceae) originate from West Kalimantan. The objective of this research was to evaluate the insecticidal activity of the bark extract of Calophyllum soulattri from West Borneo against Crocidolomia pavonana (F.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) larvae. Extraction of the bark was performed with maceration method using ethanol and continued by acetone reextraction. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with C18 column (reversed-phase) and methanol-water (1:1) as the mobile phase was used to measure the amount of active components. Bioassays were done using leaf-residual method. The results showed that acetone bark extract of 10 sample plants of C. soulattri possessed strong lethal effect against C. pavonana larvae. The lethal effect of the extracts did not differ from each other and the correlation with the content of active components was not significant. The sample plant no. 12 showed the highest yield of acetone extract. Based on both the insecticidal activity and its rendement, it is concluded that the sample plant no. 12 is promising to be used as a parent plant for mass-propagation of source plants

Abstract

Effects of an active fraction of stem bark of Dysoxylum acutangulum Miq. (Meliaceae) on reproduction of Crocidolomia pavonana (F.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). This study was conducted to determine the effect of an active fraction of Dysoxylum acutangulum stem bark on reproduction and longevity of the cabbage pest Crocidolomia pavonana. The feeding treatment with the test material was given to the second-instar larvae C. pavonana at concentrations of 2.54, 3.29 and 3.93 ppm (equivalent to LC10, LC30 and LC50), then the emerging adults were observed for their fecundity, ovarial protein content and longevity. The treatment with the test material at LC50 shortened the lifespan of adult males and females C. pavonana by 2.9 and 1.6 days, respectively, compared with controls. The treatments at LC10, LC30 and LC50 decreased the fecundity of the adult females by 44.0, 64.7 and 58.1%, respectively, compared with controls, and this effect could be associated with the decrease in protein content of ovaries of the females (29.0, 47.8 and 42.8% decrease, respectively). Such treatments also delayed the maturity of ovaries of the females. Suppression of reproductive capacity of C. pavonana could contribute significantly to overall suppression of the pest population if the test material is used in the field.

Abstract

A high population of Crocidolomia pavonana larvae reduces Brassicaceae crop productivity. To control the pest population, mixed plant extract as botanical insecticides is one of the alternatives. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the joint action between mixed extracts of Azadirachta indica and Barringtonia asiatica seed extracts against C. pavonana larvae and the effect on feeding behavior. The seeds are extracted with ethanol using the maceration method. Bioassays are conducted by a feeding method. Each level of concentration tested and controlled is repeated five times. The concentration-mortality relationship is analyzed using probit. Feeding behavior assayed by choice and no-choice at concentrations equivalent to LC25, LC50, and LC75. The results show the mixture of A. indica and B. asiatica seed extract at a ratio of 3:2.3 has a strongly synergistic action with an LC50 of 0.04% and a combination index of 0.27. The extract mixture at a concentration of 0.02-0.08% is reduced feeding activity 77.16-92.84%. Further research is needed to evaluate the extract mixture in the field.

Abstract

As several reports of impacts arise due to the use of synthetic insecticides, the investigation for safer alternative insecticides should be continued. Using plant material that has several bioactivities is a promising way out to control insect pest. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of leaf and seed extract of Castanopsis megacarpa on mortality, longevity development and feeding preference of Crocidolomia pavonana larvae. Extraction conducted by infusion method. The bioassay assesment was carried out using the residual method. The concentration-mortality relationship was analyzed by probit. The antifeedant test was tested using choice and no-choice methods. Both extracts showed the same strong insecticidal activity, LC50 of 0.18% (leaf) and 0.12% (seed). Leaf and seed extracts at concentrations equivalent to LC50 and LC75 in both methods used showed consistent antifeedant properties. The antifeedant activity of extracts in the no-choice method at both concentrations showed a range of activities of 40.1%-53.7% (leaf) and 74.4%-82.7% (seed) extracts. The leaf and seed extracts of C. megacarpa did not significantly extend the larval development period. Plant material that has more than one bioactivity will be better for suppress the insect pest populations in the field.

Abstract

Identifying symptoms of P. capsici pathogen attack that causes stem rot disease in pepper seedlings is an indispensable first step to determining the type and technique of disease prevention and effective control in the supply of healthy pepper seedlings. This study aimed to determine the occurrence of P. capsici attack symptoms in pepper seedlings. The pepper used was the Bengkayang variety using 2 segments of cuttings from the climbing vines of a healthy parent tree. The research was conducted at the UPSBP office in West Kalimantan Province and the Laboratory of Plant Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Tanjungpura. The source of the pathogenic inoculum that causes stem rot of pepper was taken from the rhizosphere of plants with symptoms of stem rot. The soil containing the pathogens was seized, put in polybags, and planted with healthy pepper cuttings and leaves. The results showed that there were 3 types of symptoms caused by P. capsici attack, namely symptoms on the leaves with black spots appearing that could cause necrosis and cause leaf fall, on the shoots/shoots that could cause the nodes to break off, and on the base of the stem/roots can cause plant death.
