Abstract

Visual communication design education in Indonesia has long applied studio-based teaching methods influenced by the history of the European design education system. In studio-based learning, students are required to master competencies formed from; personality competence, technical competence, communication competence, methodological competence, and social competence. In the studio room, student knowledge is developed by conducting training guided by lecturers. The studio trained technical exercises such as sharpening hand skills, processing taste, and shape. The studio also forms students' understanding of the design's concept. Gradually the quality in designing can be formed. With the Covid-19 pandemic, studio-based teaching methods have been forced to be carried out online. This article seeks to describe the forms and processes of change in learning in studios that use digital technology as a result of the pandemic conditions. By taking some examples of cases of application of learning in the design studio, the presentation intends to reflect a new learning style rooted in studio-based learning in visual communication design education and to present ideas that become material for further research for the development of learning methods in the field of design in the future.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the art discourse that is the foundation for developing modern fine arts in Surabaya. Art discourse represents the fundamental ideas behind the creation of artworks, which are developed and dialectically discussed within the context of the art ecosystem in Surabaya. The research design is based on an analytical, historical research method with a sociohistorical approach. The findings reveal the existence of continuity and change in art discourse from the Aksera generation (Academy of Fine Arts Surabaya) in the 1970s to the post-Aksera generations, namely the 1980s and 1990s generations. Three bases of art discourse emerged as the core expressions of aesthetics in modern fine arts in Surabaya during the 1970s to 1990s: 1. The discourse of nationalism (identity) underlies the art discourse of the Aksera generation; 2. The discourse of the market (commodification of art) becomes the main concern of the 1980s generation; 3. The social-political discourse serves as the platform for the art discourse of the 1990s generation. These three discourses demonstrate similarities and differences within the context of art discourse that evolved in modern fine arts in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

The development of popular music in Indonesia as a country with rich cultural plurality, is interesting to study. The dominant study of the dangdut genre has the potential to overlook the artistic richness contained in its various musical genres. The setting of the 1970s as a historical period of global modern society that gave birth to many countercultural phenomena and leaps in communication technology in developing countries, including Indonesia, has guided the focus of our research. This research aims to answer the question of how the cluster of artistic values of 1970s Indonesian popular music in its popular songs was able to make an inspirational contribution to the development of Indonesian popular music thereafter. The choice of the conceptual foundation of art historical functionalism has led us to use an interdisciplinary research design that includes a musicological approach to analyze the form of the song, a cultural studies approach to interpret the artistic content of the music text, and a critical discourse analysis to examine the contradictions of the music discourse. From the results of the combined analysis, we found that the artistic value of 1970s Indonesian popular music stands on the foundation of artistic form supported by the three forms of songs as musical compositions, and the aesthetics of song lyrics. In addition, it was found that the cluster of artistic value that includes aesthetic value, emotional response, aesthetic value, cognitive knowledge, and historical value in 1970s Indonesian popular songs also offers artistic novelty as well as a distinctive, advanced expression impact. The findings of this study have provided additional knowledge of popular music, with an emphasis on the functionalization of the artistic value of a song in its historical setting. The findings also contribute to the need for the study of Indonesian popular music with its rich artistic content to develop an interdisciplinary approach.

Abstract

This study focuses on the integration of Indonesian traditional music education at the elementary school level as a strategy for promoting culture in Indonesia. It recognizes the significance of social capital, cultural capital, and knowledge capital as the foundation for fostering a comprehensive and systematic approach to cultural development. The research employs interview, observation, and literature review methods to gather data, guided by three key questions: (1) the current state of traditional music teaching in Indonesian elementary schools, (2) the strategies employed in integrating traditional music education, and (3) the outcomes of the Archipelago Traditional Music pre-congress in 2021 within the paradigm of elementary school music education. The analysis is primarily based on the implementation of previous policies and programs, particularly those managed by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The study's findings reveal several important aspects, including: (1) the need for statutory regulations supporting the conservation of traditional music programs, (2) fostering active collaboration between teachers and traditional artists or musicians through open participation, (3) providing necessary facilities and infrastructure to create an ecosystem conducive to traditional music education at the elementary school level, (4) implementing training programs to enhance the traditional music competence of elementary school teachers, and (5) involving the traditional music community in the design of the curriculum for traditional music education in elementary schools. These results underscore the importance of integrating traditional music education at the elementary school level to promote Indonesian culture. By implementing the suggested strategies, policymakers and educators can contribute to the preservation and development of traditional music, creating a stronger cultural foundation within Indonesian society.

Abstract

The interaction of Nusantara with variousĀ  nations that has occurred since long ago led to the acculturation of local and immigrant cultures and produced a new culture. One of them is Wayang Potehi which comes from China and develops in Java. The purpose of this study is to find and describe the facial proportions of the female character of Wayang Potehi in Gudo, Jombang. The method used is a quantitative research method by measuring the facial proportions of several female characters of Wayang Potehi in Gudo with the golden ratio theory and calculating the average. In addition, this research also applies interviews with the chairman, Toni, and the puppeteer of Hok Ho An (Wayang Potehi Gudo group), Sonny, as well as direct observation. The golden ratio theory is not used to assess the proportion of Wayang Potehi but as a tool to find the average size of the proportion. The result of this study is the acculturation of Chinese and Javanese culture in visuals, language, stories, characters and characteristics as well as the artists behind the Potehi Wayang. The majority of Wayang Potehi are recognized by the symbols on their clothes and accessories, especially for female characters. Some of the female characters of Wayang Potehi created by the sculptor and Toni's team are quite different from the female characters of Wayang Potehi from China. This shows that the background of the artist (Javanese) influences the work of Wayang Potehi production.
