Abstract

This community service (PkM) activity was in the form of Socialization and Training on the use of the Orai application for English teachers at SMP Negeri 4 Laguboti, which aimed to overcome the difficulties teachers had in determining effective speaking learning media, considering that students' English speaking skills were not optimal, even though the Toba region is an international tourist area. The main problem faced by partners was the lack of mastery of technology-based learning media. The solution provided was training on the Orai application, an AI-based digital media for speaking and public speaking practice. The activity, which was held on October 29-31, 2025, included socialization of Orai features such as speed and intonation analysis, followed by direct practice of recording voices and utilizing AI feedback for improvement. The evaluation results showed significant improvements in the aspects of pronunciation, tempo, and clarity of teachers' speech, as well as fostering enthusiasm for integrating technology in the teaching and learning process to make it more interactive and modern.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety is one of the major affective barriers that hinder students’ oral performance in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. This study aims to investigate the levels, forms, and contributing factors of speaking anxiety among Grade XI students at SMAN 3 Pematangsiantar. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations. The findings reveal that students experience a high level of speaking anxiety influenced by five interrelated factors: psychological, linguistic, pedagogical, sociocultural, and environmental. Psychological factors such as fear of making mistakes, low self-confidence, and fear of negative evaluation emerged as the most dominant contributors. Linguistic limitations, particularly vocabulary shortages, pronunciation difficulties, and grammatical concerns, also increased students’ hesitation to speak. Pedagogical aspects, including teacher correction styles, unclear task instructions, and difficult speaking tasks, further intensified anxiety. Sociocultural influences, such as peer judgment and cultural norms of silence, shaped students’ reluctance to speak, while environmental conditions like large class sizes and limited speaking opportunities outside the classroom exacerbated the problem. The study concludes that speaking anxiety is a complex and multidimensional issue requiring comprehensive support from teachers and institutions. Creating a more supportive, communicative, and low-anxiety classroom environment is essential for improving students’ speaking confidence and fluency.

Abstract

Grammar, particularly subject-verb agreement (SVA), played a crucial role in ensuring the structural accuracy of students’ writing. However, many students often found SVA difficult to master, which led to frequent errors in their sentences. In response to this problem, this research analyzed the effect of the Substitution Drill Technique as a teaching strategy to improve students’ mastery of SVA in writing descriptive texts. This study was conducted at SMP Cinta Rakyat 3 Pematangsiantar, focusing on eighth-grade students. The objective of this research was to investigate whether the Substitution Drill Technique had a significant effect on students’ ability to understand and apply SVA correctly in their writing. The design of this research was quasi-experimental with two groups: the experimental class taught using substitution drills and the control class taught with conventional methods. Both groups were given a pre-test and a post-test. The results showed that the experimental class’s mean score increased significantly from 51.74 in the pre-test to 84.52 in the post-test, while the control class only improved from 51.97 to 72.31. The independent samples t-test result confirmed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating that the Substitution Drill Technique significantly affected students’ mastery of SVA. Therefore, this study concluded that substitution drills were effective in enhancing students’ grammatical accuracy, particularly in applying subject-verb agreement in descriptive text writing

Abstract

Mastery of writing skills is very important. However, many students experience difficulties and challenges in improving their writing skills. This study was used to determine the effect of implementing the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on the writing skills of class XI students of SMK Swasta GKPI 1 Pematangsiantar using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. This study took samples using a purposive sampling technique involving 60 students who were divided into 2 groups, namely the experimental group (XI TKJ A) which consisted of 30 students, and the control group (X TKJ B) which also consisted of 30 students. In this study, the experimental class received treatment using the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model and the control class with conventional methods. In this study, data were collected with pre-test and post-test and analyzed using an independent sample t-test where in the experimental class the mean pre-test value was 40,67 and post-test was 75, while the mean value in the control class on the pre-test was 35,33 and post-test was 50. After being tested using the t-test, a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05 was obtained, so the Null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. This means that there was a significant increase in students in the experimental class who were given treatment. So, this shows a significant difference between the experimental class and the control class. Based on the research findings, it was concluded that the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model can significantly improve students' writing skills, especially in writing analytical texts with correct organization.

Abstract

The use of linguistic coding in advertising discourse constitutes an important communicative strategy that reflects the diversity of language structures employed in marketing practices. The deliberate integration of multiple languages in advertisements serves not only to attract audience attention but also to support the preservation and visibility of regional languages through contemporary media platforms. This study aims to investigate instances of code-switching and code-mixing in food and beverage advertisement compilation videos uploaded by Rofif Satria on  the YouTube Satria Channel. The research adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Data were collected through systematic observation and note-taking procedures. Each advertisement video was carefully examined, and all verbal and written elements were transcribed. Instances of code-switching and code-mixing were then identified, classified, and documented. The collected data were organized according to their linguistic forms and categorized based on the types of code-switching and code-mixing present. The findings indicate that code-switching and code-mixing occur frequently in advertising discourse, encompassing both internal and external forms. These phenomena include the insertion of words, phrases, clauses, and baster elements. Contextual analysis of linguistic units at the word, phrase, and clause levels is essential for interpreting their communicative functions within advertisements. Overall, the results demonstrate that code-switching and code-mixing play a significant role in advertising language, functioning as effective communication strategies while contributing to the maintenance of linguistic diversity

An analysis of how a well-known female public person is portrayed in international and local web media, with a focus on gender representation. The study clarifies the significance of impartial and fair coverage of female leaders in the media by using a feminist stylistics approach. This can help to promote gender equality in society and destroy gender stereotypes. Using a qualitative approach, this study investigates how gender relations are portrayed at the word, phrase/sentence, and discourse levels utilizing feminist stylistics framework developed by Sara Mills. The results show that cultural norms and Sri Mulyani's standing both domestically and globally have an impact on how the Indonesian Minister of Finance is portrayed on foreign and domestic news websites. These factors produce discrete but diverse outcomes. The study finds that the minister is treated properly and without overt gender prejudice by utilizing the feminist stylistics theory framework's three levels of analysis.
