Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the spatial reasoning constructs employed by pre-service elementary school teachers when solving geometry problems. A total of 36 participants were invited to complete an online test, after which two selected individuals were engaged in solving the problems. Interviews were then conducted to accurately describe the process of solving geometric problems. The results showed the existence of two types of spatial reasoning constructions, namely series and parallel. Both construction types revealed the interrelationship between spatial reasoning and the problem-solving process. This research highlighted the significance of spatial reasoning as an integral component in solving geometric problems, emphasizing the need for further investigation into its distinctiveness. This could be achieved by incorporating advanced geometric concepts and materials into future research. DOI: https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.17.2.20620.209-224

Abstract

The surge in digital literacy emerged as a prominent trend during the era of online learning in elementary schools. However, the success of connecting the digital environment to the learning process is contingent upon the teacher's proficiency. Consequently, we introduced DEL (Digital Enhanced Learning), an instructional approach that fully integrates digital technology into all learning devices. This study seeks to assess students' digital literacy and creativity during DEL activities in elementary schools conducted over a period of 10 weeks. A total of 290 students participated in the DEL activities. Students' digital literacy and creativity were evaluated using two instruments: DELQ (Digital Enhanced Learning Questionnaire) and CET (Creativity Evaluation Tool). DELQ gauged students' digital literacy, while CET assessed creativity. ANOVA was employed for data analysis to evaluate the consistency and achievement of students. The findings of this study indicate that DEL activities contribute to enhanced creativity, specifically in the aspects of fluency and elaboration. Students' digital literacy plays a pivotal role in supporting the fluency and elaboration processes during learning activities. Moreover, the effectiveness of DEL activities, as perceived through students' digital literacy, indicates an improvement in knowledge related to digital literacy. In summary, this study underscores the positive impact of digital-based activities in fostering both digital literacy and creativity among elementary school students

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Auditory, Intellectuality, Repetition (AIR) learning model in enhancing the mathematics academic performance of elementary school students. This study employed a quantitative methodology utilizing an Interrupted Time Series design, involving students who undertook a pre-test before the AIR-based learning intervention and a post-test subsequently. The Number-Test was employed to assess students' mathematical proficiency. The data acquired from both tests were subjected to quantitative analysis. A paired sample t-test was performed to compare students' pre-test and post-test scores. The normalized gain (N-gain) score was computed to assess the extent of enhancement. The results indicated a notable moderate enhancement in students' attainment of mathematics learning outcomes following the implementation of AIR models. Subsequent investigation indicated no substantial disparity in mathematics learning outcomes between male and female students. The AIR model demonstrated equivalent efficacy across genders. The AIR learning paradigm significantly improved students' comprehension of mathematical concepts, specifically regarding least common multiple (LCM) and greatest common factor (GCF) topics.

Abstract

Despite the growing emphasis on computational thinking (CT) in mathematics education, few studies have explored how technology-assisted problem-posing approaches can effectively enhance CT skills among elementary students. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Problem Posing learning model assisted by GeoGebra in enhancing CT skills among fifth-grade elementary students. Utilizing a quantitative Interrupted Time Series design, the study involved 24 students. The intervention was implemented over ten weeks, with three mathematics sessions per week to facilitate interactive problem creation and exploration. Data were gathered using the Computational Thinking Test (CT-Test), administered before and after the intervention. The results showed an increase in the mean score from 69.38 (pre-test) to 83.54 (post-test), with statistically significant differences confirmed by a paired sample t-test (p < 0.001). Performance across CT indicators revealed the highest gains in abstraction and generalization, while debugging remained the lowest. Gender-based analysis indicated that female students slightly outperformed males in post-test scores, though both groups demonstrated significant improvement. These findings underscore the effectiveness of integrating problem posing and GeoGebra in fostering students’ CT skills, particularly in solving word problems in mathematics. This approach not only promotes conceptual understanding but also supports differentiated learning strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to develop Wordwall-based interactive digital media to enhance second-grade students' interest and learning outcomes in addition and subtraction. Mathematics learning in elementary schools faces challenges, including low student interest and poor learning outcomes due to limited variation in teaching methods and media. This research employs the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) with 28 second-grade students as the subjects. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, questionnaires, and tests. The developed media presents addition and subtraction through engaging educational games designed for students in the concrete operational stage, featuring virtual manipulatives that simulate hands-on learning experiences. Validation results show high media quality with expert ratings of 92% (material validity) and 88% (media validity). Learning interest increased significantly, with 89% of students responding positively to the interactive features. Learning outcomes improved substantially, with pre-test scores averaging 65.4, increasing to post-test scores of 84.2, and classical learning completeness rising from 57% to 89%. Statistical analysis (paired t-test, p < 0.05) confirms a significant improvement. This research demonstrates that Wordwall-based digital manipulatives effectively enhance both interest and achievement in elementary mathematics, contributing to the quality of education in the digital era.

Abstract

Critical literacy is the ability to actively analyze, question, and evaluate texts, media, and other forms of communication to understand the deeper meanings, power relations, and perspectives behind them. It goes beyond simply reading or comprehending information since it involves thinking about who created the message, why it was created, and whose voices are represented or missing. Ultimately, critical literacy empowers individuals to become thoughtful, informed, and active participants in society, capable of questioning injustice, promoting equality, and making independent, ethical judgments. This community engagement project was conducted in SDN Kenongorejo 02, Madiun in collaboration of Universitas PGRI Madiun dan National Dong Hwa University. This critical literacy is working together with Critical Literacy Platform (CLP). The priority problems are: (1) the low level of teacher and student involvement and participation in efforts to improve literacy quality; (2) the socialization of the program is not carried out optimally for both teachers and students; (3) the lack of understanding of critical literacy among teachers and students; (4) the lack of innovation in learning related to critical literacy. There are two solutions which have been conducted: (1) critical literacy training by international experts as a means of enhancing critical literacy; (2) designing learning activities through the critical literacy platform.
