Abstract

Social media plays a very important role in shaping the identity and trends in todays world. Not only for the young generation, almost all people in every generation have also been “addicted” to social media for their daily need and in other processes through assimilation and integration and building new networks in their communities through online and offline activities. As a result, the emergence of the social media as a medium of communication and information today has many impacts on changes of social structure including the religious identity of its users. This article explores the tendency for the development of religious identity in social media among the Ponianak Muslim community by focusing on the typology of social media users among Pontianaak Muslims and various trends in the religious identity of its users. The work suggests that social media users in the Pontianak Muslim community have three main typologies, namely NetPublisher, NetWorker, and NetAdvocate. And the religious identity tendency of social media users in Pontianak is constructed through religious narratives dominated by conservativism discourses. They are seen through at least three aspects including the tendency of religious affiliation, various religious issues that are often discussed, and responses to trending religious issues in social media by Pontianak Muslim netizens.

Abstract

After the Covid-19 pandemic, the worship activities of Muslims have given rise to various controversies in the context of their principles, attitudes, and worship relations. In addition to explaining the controversies of Muslim worship after the Covid-19 pandemic, this study also analyzes the factors and implications of this phenomenon. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. Data was collected through direct observation and interviews with Muslims who carried out the five-time obligatory worship activities in the congregation at the mosque after the Covid-19 pandemic. The analysis in this study was carried out by reducing, describing, and inductively interpreting the data. The findings in this study show that post-Covid-19 pandemic worship controversies have not only appeared in the form of regulations, fqih, and worship norms. This context is influenced by the experience, knowledge, and meaning of Muslims, which has implications for the principles, attitudes, and patterns of worship in a more personal and subjective direction after the Covid-19 pandemic.

This study described the essence of reading fondness, learning discipline, and social care in developing the students’ character development. In addition, this study also aimed to analyze the role of teachers and parents in character development during the online learning process. Students, teachers, and parents provided information via online questionnaires and interviews. Descriptive quantitative analysis, thematic analysis, and reflective thinking were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that teachers and parents faced challenges that impacted student character quality. Teachers and parents have limited opportunities to shape a students’ character. Abstract

The Indonesian Ulema Council (Majelis Ulama Indonesia, MUI) was stigmatised as an institution accommodating conservative Islamic groups’ interests post-New Order. However, the religious fatwas produced by the MUI during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 had prioritised independence so that it returned to its original role, namely as a translator of government policies. For this reason, this article aims to examine the MUI fatwas and its relationship to state policies in tackling the spread of Covid-19. It is a qualitative research study with a historical approach, examining the content of seven fatwas issued by the Fatwa Commission (Komisi Fatwa) between March and July 2020 as the primary data sources. This study found that MUI’s legal arguments and methods are more inclusive, flexible, and progressive towards socio-religious problems. These fatwas have become a reference for the government in taking policies to suppress the spread of Covid-19. It is reinforced by the fact that several fatwas issued by MUI were used as guidelines by the government in formulating policies to curb the spread of Covid-19. Therefore, the authors argue that the MUI’s fatwa politics not only serve the interests of the Muslim community but also align with the state’s interests in tackling the spread of Covid-19. Thus, the debate regarding the stigmatisation of the role of MUI can be dismissed through these findings, providing new insights into the dynamic interplay between religious and legal frameworks.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the parenting practices of young Islamic parents in Pontianak, Indonesia, amidst the evolving contexts of pop Islamism and fluid Islamism. The research uses anthropological lenses to focus on early childhood parenting within millennial Islamic families. The city of Pontianak, characterized by rapid development, ethnic and cultural diversity, and varied religious practices, provides a unique setting for examining these dynamics. Data collection encompassed observations, interviews, and documentation, targeting millennial Muslim parents born between 1981 and 1996, with children aged 0-8 years, totaling 83 participants. Interviews spanned a range of Islamic ideologies, including popular Islamism, tarbiyah, Tahrir, Salafi, and jihadist. The methodology involved data assembly, comprehensive observation, coding, categorization into themes, and narrative presentation. The results reveal diverse parenting patterns influenced by religious affiliations, advisors, worship practices, and explicit or implicit religious affiliations. While parenting styles varied, a high prevalence of authoritarian approaches was noted, with religion playing a pivotal role in child-rearing decisions and social interactions. The study also highlights the material aspects of parenting, including doctrinal ideologies and their manifestation in everyday life. The findings provide crucial insights into contemporary Islamic society's social and religious dynamics, emphasizing the need for an inclusive, multidimensional approach to understanding Islamism that extends beyond political and ideological realms. This research contributes to a deeper comprehension of Islamic millennial families' social and cultural intricacies in Indonesia and their strategies for balancing religious traditions with modern challenges.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the views of the Catholic Church on human rights and put them into dialogue with the concept of human rights based on discourse theory as put forward by Jürgen Habermas. In the view of the Catholic Church, the ethical basis for the concept of human rights is the biblical view of human beings as being made in the image of God, which later became the forerunner to the birth of the concept of human dignity and the ethical basis for human rights. This article shows that the discourse theory rejects this theological model of justification for human rights. The criticism of the discourse theory as it relates to an absolute paradigm is that the absolute paradigm requires metaphysical premises. However, in a modern society characterized by a pluralism of worldviews and philosophical and religious beliefs, such metaphysical claims are no longer acceptable. Through the lens of discourse theory, the foundation of the notion of human rights cannot be based on the pre-political basis of religious values. This discourse theory grounding model is based on the conditions of contemporary post-metaphysical society, characterized by a plurality of comprehensive doctrines. However, Habermas emphasizes the role of religion in the public sphere in promoting human rights. He advocates for the reinvention of public reason by encouraging religious people to translate sacred terms into secular language when entering formal political spaces. According to Habermas’ theories, democratic decision-making must allow citizens the right to use religious terms in public debate. Furthermore, this article shows that discourse theory creates a roadmap for human rights by allowing religion, law, and politics to coexist. Only if we adhere to the principles of discourse theory can we guarantee the fair and just participation of both secular and religious members in a democratic constitutional state. Abstract

Kapuas Hulu is an area located in the interior of West Kalimantan and has 23 sub-districts well-known for their ethnicity, race and culture. Kapuas Hulu has also small kingdoms originating from the Sintang region. The Muslims in Kapuas Hulu come from Dayak tribe, who later converted to Islam. The sultanate’s presence played an important and strategic role, even determined the development of Islam itself in the territory. At the same time, there were some obstacles to Islamization throughout the coastal Sultanate which caused “Near Pedalaman“ area a bit late in accepting Islam. This article discusses the history of the Islamic kingdom in Kapuas Hulu Regency, which is examined from the translation of the manuscript of Prince Kesoema Anom Soeria Negara. This paper traces the development of Islam and the rulers of Islamic kingdoms in Kapuas Hulu Regency. This article is qualitative research. After the data was collected with heuristics, it was analyzed by source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Study results demonstrate that the kingdoms in Kapuas Hulu have contributed to leading their respective villages and providing a solid cultural system for maintaining cultural and state assets. Thus, many local residents converted to Islam through the royal system. Kiyai Pati Uda was the first king from Jongkong sub-district. Another finding indicates that the Prince Kesoema Anom Soeria Negara manuscript also includes the names of royal descendants from Kapuas Hulu Regency, namely from Jongkong, Nanga Suhaid, Bunut, and other sub-districts.
