Abstract

Religion in the Malay community is not only seen as something related to belief but also concerns issues of identity and symbols in other community groups. This study intends to look at the social construction of Islamic local tradition in the Malay community. This study argues that it turns out that the social construction of religion builds a cultural concept in Islamic religious values as an identity through the customs of the Malay community. In response to that argument, the question arises: How is the form of social construction of religion in the Malay community? And how does the social construction of religion affect the social life of religion in the Malay community? This research uses a media approach and literature review that explains the social construction of Islamic traditions in Malay society. The results of this study indicate that the social construction of religion in the Malay community has several important conditions. (1) religion-based tradition orientation, (2) close solidarity in religious social construction, (3) the existence of religion-based legal norms in the Malay community, and (4) a proud identity that is superior to the Malay community. These findings conclude that religious social construction in Malay society shows that religious and tribal identities develop as a religious social construction.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformation of meaning in the Robo-robo tradition of the Mempawah community, from an initial orientation toward “village safety” through prayers and ritual processions into a broader social meaning that includes community interaction, entertainment, and the economic activation of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The research employed a qualitative approach with ethnographic orientation, using participatory observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and visual documentation as the main techniques of data collection. The findings show that Robo-robo is attended not only as a ritual obligation but also as a social arena for networking, collective leisure, and economic exchange, particularly through MSME participation during the event. Although the core ritual elements remain performed, their significance has shifted and expanded, becoming more adaptive to contemporary socio-economic needs. Theoretically, this study implies that tradition should not be understood as a fixed cultural residue, but as a living social institution capable of refunctionalizing ritual practices into multi-purpose public spaces where sacred legitimacy, social cohesion, and economic productivity coexist and reinforce one another.

Abstract

West Kalimantan has great potential of forests and indigenous people. Therefore, it is crucial to study on forest management by indigenous people. The study is aimed at analyzing the forest management carried out by the Dayak Katab Kebahan community; and the condition of the forest ecosystem. The research area is in Melawi Regency, West Kalimantan. Observations and in-depth interviews were conducted to explore the customs in managing forests. A vegetation survey using purposive sampling was performed. The fauna study was conducted by the exploration method. Vegetation data analysis was carried out by calculating the importance value and diversity indices. One-way ANOVA analysis was done to determine the presence of forest ecosystem differences between two forests. The findings showed forest managed by the Dayak Katab Kebahan community has a core zone which is a zone that should not be disturbed, and a cultivation zone which can be utilized and can be intercropped with plantation crops; and the forest ecosystem managed by the Dayak Katab Kebahan community has a higher fauna richness, vegetation diversity index and the importance value index of each species. It is suggested that the government be involved in supporting the customary law of local communities in forest conservation.

Abstract

This study investigates the transmission of local Islamic texts used in West Kalimantan (Borneo, Indonesia) for Islamic religious education during the 20th century. It addresses a research gap concerning how Islamic knowledge was disseminated through printed works by local scholars. The research adopts a qualitative historical approach, employing content analysis through comprehensive reading, categorization, interpretation, and synthesis of primary sources. The findings reveal that Islamic educational materials in Borneo encompassed texts on theology (‘aqīdah, usūl al-dīn), jurisprudence (fiqh), history, and Qur’anic studies (‘ulūm al-Qur’ān), distributed via both commercial transactions and gifts by peers, religious officials, and sales agents. The study concludes that these transmission networks extended to neighboring Islamic sultanates and even reached Brunei Darussalam. Furthermore, these networks significantly influenced the development of educational institutions that integrated Islamic religious sciences with Western knowledge. The epistemology of Islamic education in Kalimantan was not merely a preserved tradition but a modern system open to knowledge, enabling the transmission of Islamic knowledge beyond formal institutions into broader society. This research makes an essential contribution to the development of Islamic education and the mapping of Islamic scholarship networks in the archipelago.
