Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the effect of planting media on the growth of Moringa stem cuttings and determine the best planting media for growing Moringa stem cuttings. The research was carried out in July-October 2023. Located on the Wasaka III Student Dormitory grounds, Lambung Mangkurat University, Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan. The research was carried out using a one-factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method with four treatments and five replications to obtain 20 experimental units. The treatments given: m0: 6 kg peat soil, m1: 5 kg peat soil + 1 kg husk charcoal, m2: 5 kg peat soil + 1 kg laying chicken manure, m3: 5 kg peat soil + 0.5 kg husk charcoal + 0.5 kg laying chicken manure. The results showed that the planting had a significant effect on soil pH, shoot length, number of leaf stalks, root length and root volume of Moringa stem cuttings. However, it had no real effect on the number of shoots on Moringa stem cuttings. Based on research that has been carried out, it shows that planting media given husk charcoal and manure increases the available P content by 241.34 ppm, N-dd 1.70 me/100 g, and K-dd 1.65 me/100 g in the soil. Peat can increase the pH of peat soil from acid to neutral. The treatment also had a very significant effect to all parameters.

Abstract

Danda Jaya Village is one of the primary oyster mushroom producing areas in Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan Province, but until now, the baglog waste from these cultivation activities has not been optimally managed, potentially leading to environmental pollution. This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to increase the knowledge and skills of oyster mushroom cultivators in processing baglog waste into organic fertilizer. The implementation method involved preparation, execution—consisting of lectures and practical fertilizer-making sessions—and evaluation using questionnaires. The activity was attended by 24 participants who are members of the oyster mushroom cultivation group. The practical sessions utilized oyster mushroom baglog waste (50 kg) as the primary material, mixed with cow manure, bran, agricultural lime, EM4, and molasses. Evaluation results showed a significant increase in participant knowledge; while technical procedural knowledge ranged from 0‒18.75% before the activity, it surged to 80‒100% after the training. Currently, 100% of the participants understand that baglog waste can be processed into compost, which is expected to be independently applied to their respective agricultural lands in Danda Jaya Village to support environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Background: Empty oil palm bunches (EFB) are underutilized solid waste. Liquid smoke from EFB pyrolysis contains bioactive compounds as an eco-friendly natural insecticide. Objective: This study analyzes the chemical composition of EFB liquid smoke and reviews its potential as a natural insecticide against plant pests. Methods: Liquid smoke was produced by EFB pyrolysis at 150–250°C for six hours. Chemical composition was analyzed using GC-MS. A literature review (2016–2026) evaluated the insecticidal potential of identified compounds. Results: GC-MS detected 60 compounds. The 19 compounds with highest relative content belonged to phenolics, heterocyclics, organic compounds, and organic acids. Phenol was the most dominant (21.68%), followed by pyridine (5.68%), p-cresol (4.23% and 1.86%), and 2-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one (4.14%). Literature indicates these compounds act as natural insecticides through multiple mechanisms: direct toxicity (membrane damage, protein denaturation, enzyme inactivation), metabolic disruption (inhibition of electron transport chain and ATP production), and behavioral changes (antifeedant and attractant). Synergistic effects between phenolics and ketones or pyridine derivatives may enhance insecticidal efficacy. Conclusions: EFB liquid smoke contains 60 compounds, with 19 major compounds from phenolics, heterocyclics, organic compounds, and organic acids, showing potential as natural insecticides. However, bioassays against model pests (e.g., Spodoptera litura, Sitophilus oryzae) and phytotoxicity tests are still required

Abstract

Apples (Malus sylvestris) have been grown in Indonesia, especially in highland areas such as Batu, Nongkojajar, and Poncokusumo. In order to propagate apple plants through in vitro, organ culture is performed in a controlled environment, free of pests and diseases. The research aimed to evaluate the effect of the composition of the growth regulator BAP-IAA on the growth and shoot multiplication of several apple cultivars in vitro. The research was carried out at the Indonesian Orchid Partners Laboratory Jl. Hasanudin 1 No 24 Junrejo District, Batu City, Indonesia. The four apple cultivars used were Fuji, Red Delicious, Gala, and Manalagi apples. Four types of growth regulator composition were the treatments: 3 mg L-1 BAP and 0.2 mg L-1 IAA, 6 mg L-1 BAP and 0.2 mg L-1 IAA, 3 mg L-1 BAP and 0.3 mg L-1 IAA, and 6 mg L-1 BAP and 0.3 mg L-1 IAA. The results showed that growth and yield were more precise in the combination of Red Delicious with the growth enhancer composition of 3 mg L-1 BAP and 0.3 mg L-1 IAA, as shown by the variable number of shoots and fresh weight of explants. The results showed that the combination of the Red Delicious apple cultivar with BAP 3 mg L-1+IAA 0.3 mg L-1 can be recommended as the best treatment in mass shoot production/multiplication. Keywords: composition; cytokinin-auxin; apple cultivars; shoot multiplication

Abstract

The development of edamame soybeans is quite promising. Since edamame soybeans are an export commodity, increasing edamame soybean production can support domestic and international markets. Cultivating edamame soybeans has obstacles in every production process. The soil fertility level is the main factor in increasing the production of edamame soybean cultivation, but using soil chemicals is one of the causes of decreased fertility. The solution to these obstacles is to use organic fertilizer from waste materials, one of which is liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) from goat urine. This study aims to determine the effect of LOF+ goat urine on the growth and yield of organic edamame soybeans and the best concentration of LOF+ goat urine on the growth and yield of organic edamame soybeans. The research used a randomized block design (RBD) and five treatment levels of LOF+ goat urine: 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20%, with five repetitions to obtain 25 experimental units. The research showed that treatment LOF 5% (equivalent to 50 mL LOF+ in 950 mL water) was the best treatment for increasing edamame plant height by 23.03%, number of leaves by 12.59%, and number of fresh pods by 17.29%, weight of fresh pods 41.05%, and production of as much as 41% can increase the growth and yield of edamame soybeans.
