Abstract

Estuaries are intermediate environments that are extremely susceptible to pollution, especially heavy metals like manganese (Mn). The goals of this research were to determine the amount of manganese in the consumable flesh of Jerbung shrimp (Penaeus merguiensis) taken from the Sungsang Estuary in Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra, Indonesia, and to ascertain the safe intake levels for people. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) was used to analyze the shrimp samples at a wavelength of 257. 61 nm. According to the findings, the average Mn content in shrimp muscle was somewhat higher than the limit set by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), falling between 3. 16 and 3. 21 mg/kg. Even if just shrimp are consumed, the projected consumption limits based on dietary intake calculations still suggest a comparatively low immediate health risk. However, the high Mn concentration indicates the effect of environmental pollution brought about by human actions in the Musi River estuary. These findings emphasize the significance of controlling pollution sources and carrying out routine environmental monitoring to ensure the safety of seafood and the sustainability of estuarine ecosystems.

Abstract

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in estuarine fisheries products raises concerns due to its capacity for bioaccumulation and dietary exposure in humans. Metal accumulation in aquatic organisms is influenced by body size and tissue distribution, with higher concentrations often reported in non-muscle parts such as the head and exoskeleton. However, information on Cd distribution and consumption risk in P. merguiensis from Sungsang, South Sumatra, remains limited. This study quantified Cd concentrations in P. merguiensis stratified by size (small and large) and processing condition (peeled and unpeeled), and evaluated potential health risks using Maximum Weekly Intake (MWI) and Maximum Tolerable Intake (MTI) reference thresholds. Cadmium concentrations, determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), ranged from 0,038 ± 0,0002 to 0,231 ± 0,0008 mg/kg. Higher levels were observed in unpeeled samples compared to peeled prawns, and larger individuals exhibited greater metal accumulation. Estimated weekly intake values for adult and child consumption scenarios remained below established tolerable limits, indicating that current exposure levels are unlikely to pose significant non-carcinogenic health risks under typical dietary patterns. Continuous monitoring is nevertheless necessary to support long-term seafood safety management in the region.

Abstract

Blood cockles (Anadara granosa) are filter-feeding bivalves that may accumulate microplastics and become a pathway of human exposure through seafood consumption. This study analyzed size-based variation in microplastic contamination in blood cockles marketed at Jakabaring Central Market, Palembang, Indonesia. Fifteen individuals were classified into three size groups: small (<3 cm), medium (3–4 cm), and large (>4 cm). Microplastics were extracted using 10% KOH digestion and identified microscopically according to abundance, shape, and color. The results showed a slight increase in abundance from 12.8 particles/individual in small cockles to 13.0 and 14.6 particles/individual in medium and large cockles, but the differences were not significant (p=0.467). Fragments were the dominant shape, while black particles predominated in all size groups. Pearson correlation indicated a weak positive relationship between soft tissue weight and microplastic abundance (r=0.360; p=0.188). These findings indicate that contamination is driven by pollution sources and environmental conditions rather than individual size.

Jurnal Lahan Suboptimal: Journal of Suboptimal Lands. 8(2):141-147. Various industrial activities or natural activity in the Musi River, might contribute to the heavy metals input in mangrove area of Payung Island. The purpose of this study was to analyze the concentration of  heavy metals zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) in sediment, root and leaves of mangrove A. alba. This research was conducted in January 2018. Analysis of heavy metal used Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The results indicated that Zn concentration of sediment (13.35-22.61 mg/kg) and Pb (0.14-3.17 mg/kg), was still in quality standard level. Zn concentration in roots was 0.45-4.95 mg/kg and in leaf was Zn 2.46-12.76 mg/kg, while Pb on root and leaves was not detected.  The value of BCF roots, leaf BCF and TF values were 0.15-0.24 ; 0.30-0.59 ; and 1.69-2.47, respectively. The results of this study indicated that mangrove A. alba in Payung Island as moderate accumulator plants category, and plants could transmit heavy metals effectively.

Jurnal Lahan Suboptimal: Journal of Suboptimal Lands. 8(2):213-219. The Musi river estuary plays an important role as one of the fishing grounds. The high activity in the musi estuary has an impact on the ecosystems in this region, including the negative impact in the form of ecosystem changes caused by heavy metals. The aim of this study was to determine the concentrations of heavy metals (Pb and Cu) in Alepesvariand Johniusbelangerii in the Musi river estuary. Fish were obtained from fishermen who used the Gillnet Millennium (Ply) gear in July 2018 and were analyzed using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The results showed that the concentration of  Pb  in J. belangerii was greater than A. vari, but the concentration of Cu  in  A. vari  was greater than in  J. belangerii. Concentration of  Pb has exceeded the limit for safe consumption based on National Agency of Drug and Food Control.

Biodiversity of fishes in musi estuary, South Sumatra, Indonesia.  Jurnal Lahan Suboptimal : Journal of Suboptimal Lands 9(2): 192-198.The high activity in the Musi estuary will have an impact on fishes diversity. This research aimed to analyse the biodiversity of fishes in the Musi estuary in South Sumatra. An experimental fishing method was used for data collection by fishing ground following the local fishermen habit using gillnet millennium. The abundance of fish species found were 21 species and 16 families. The main catch was Hemibagrus nemurus with a high relative abundance (RA) of 35.4% but the high availability frequency of 100% is Eleutheronema tetradactylum. The average value of the moderate diversity index (H'= 1.47), the moderate evenness index (J'= 0.48) and the low dominance index (D= 0.32). This condition shows that the community structure of the species captured by the gill net is in a fairly stable condition with the number of species that are spread fairly evenly and no species dominate each other.

Abstract

In coastal environments and the ecosystems, including seagrass ecosystems, heavy metals can lead to pollution. This study goal is to analyze the concentration of heavy metals in water based on safety standards for marine organisms. Water samples were collected from two locations: Jeralangan HamLet and Cukuh Nyai HamLet in Pahawang Island, Lampung, Indonesia. Water quality parameters were measured in situ. Heavy metals such Pb, Cu, Ni, and Zn were prepared using Wet digestion method and the concentrations were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) SHIMADZU AA-7000. At the same location, the highest concentration of was observed for Zn 0.406 mg/L at station 2, while the lowest concentration was recorded for Cu 0.019 mg/L. The concentration of heavy metals Pb, Cu, Ni and Zn in water has exceeded the quality standards for marine biota and marine tourism.These research can be used as a basis for future planning in the management of Pahawang Island’s coastal environment.

Abstract

Fish and some groups of shrimps and crabs are one of the economically important biota that live in the waters. Accumulation of heavy metals in fish can affect the economic value of marine fishery products. There are several types of fish that contain heavy metals and are harmful when consumed by humans. The purpose of this study was to determine the dominant bycatch fish species and the accumulation of heavy metals Pb and Cu in the bycatch of stationary lift net Pesisir Banyuasin. This study was conducted in November 2019 and the dominant bycatch included japuh fish (Dussumieria acuta), tembang fish (Sardinella fimbriata) and parang-parang fish (Chirocentrus dorab). Samples were taken from one stationary lift net then analysed using SSA (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry) with 3 repetitions. The results of the analysis found the average concentration of heavy metals Pb and Cu in japuh fish was 0.65 mg/kg Pb; 0.16 mg/kg Cu. In tembang fish 0.70 mg/kg Pb and 0.03 mg/kg Cu. The parang-parang fish was 0.50 mg/kg and 0.17 mg/kg Cu. Based on the quality standards of SNI, Directorate General of Food and Drug Administration and FAO, the Pb and Cu concentrations of the three types of by-catch fish are still below the quality standard threshold and safe for human consumption.

Abstract

Pencemaran logam berat dapat meningkat karena aktivitas manusia di pesisir dan berisiko menurunkan kualitas pangan hasil perikanan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyebarkan dan mengumpulkan logam berat tembaga (Cu) pada jaringan organ dari ikan kakap dan ikan senangin yang diperoleh dari pengepul lokal di wilayah Sungsang IV. Metode destruksi basah digunakan untuk menganalisis organ sampel dan hasilnya diukur menggunakan Spektrofotometer Serapan Atom (AAS). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pola akumulasi Cu pada jaringan organ secara urutan yaitu Hati-Insang-Daging. Konsentrasi Cu tertinggi ditemukan pada organ hati ikan kakap mencapai nilai 36.27 mg/kg, menunjukkan bahwa hati adalah tempat utama akumulasi logam hasil proses detoksifikasi. Konsentrasi Cu paling rendah ditemukan pada jaringan daging, berkisar antara 0.14 dan 1.47 mg/kg. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa daging ikan yang dipasarkan masih sangat layak untuk dikonsumsi. Untuk menjaga keamanan pangan masyarakat secara berkelanjutan, kualitas lingkungan perairan perlu dijaga secara berkelanjutan.
