Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the correlation between scholastic ability in chemistry and creativity in stoichiometry learning among first-year students. Chemistry scholastic ability is naturally integrated among first-year students who demonstrate their reasoning skills in the field of chemistry, which may influence students' creativity in their chemistry learning. This quantitative research used a correlational design to examine two variables without providing an intervention. The research results showed a significant correlation between scholastic ability in chemistry and creativity, but were inconsistent across the two creativity measures (verbal assessment of creativity [VAC] and figural assessment of creativity [FAC]). Chemistry scholastic ability had a significant correlation with VAC. The first-year students identified had moderate-level reasoning ability, as evidenced by their difficulties transforming stoichiometry knowledge at the microscopic-symbolic level. Students' reasoning abilities encouraged the emergence of an original idea for molecular modeling using environmentally friendly materials (VAC). Even though they did not achieve high-level reasoning ability, they succeeded in creating a mind map (FAC) on stoichiometry by supporting digital literacy. Reasoning ability can foster creativity as one of the 21st-century skills, enabling students to directly contribute to preserving the environment by using molecular modeling materials. They also solve daily-life problems more easily by applying stoichiometry knowledge visualized in a mind map.

Abstract

This study aims to measure students' scientific literacy of science concepts, especially environmental pollution. This study assesses the scientific literacy of eighth-grade students’ using a quantitative descriptive method, with a sample selected through random sampling. Data were collected through a scientific literacy test focused on environmental issues and reinforced with interview and students’ respons. The science literacy test contains 10 double-choice questions that have been validated and tested for reliability. The research results revealed that students' scientific literacy in three competencies falls within the profience category, specifically: explain phenomena scientifically (72%), construct and evaluate designs for scientific inquiry (53%), and research, evaluate and use scientific information (69%). The average scientific literacy score was 67%, indicating that junior high school students' scientific literacy needs improvement in competency 2. The findings of Indonesian students' performance in this assessment highlight the need to improve learning strategies to strengthen students' ability to engage in critical scientific investigations.

Abstract

The Unesa Campus Forest is one of the green open spaces that has the to play a significant role in mitigating climate change through carbon storage and sequestration. However, information on the carbon storage capacity and CO₂ absorption of local tree species in this area is still limited. This study aims to analyze the carbon stock and CO2 absorption in C. cainito and M. kauki in the Unesa campus forest and their relationship with morphological and physiological characteristics as well as physical and chemical parameters of the environment carbon stocks and CO2 absorption in C. cainito and M. kauki in the Unesa campus forest and to examine their relationships with morphological and physiological characteristics, as well as with physical and chemical environmental parameters. The study employed a total census and purposive sampling method, with analysis of the relationship between variables using Pearson's correlation test. The results showed that M. kauki has higher carbon stock and CO₂ absorption capacity than C. cainito. Carbon stock was positively correlated with height, circumference, diameter, and leaf area of C. cainito and M. kauki. Meanwhile, chlorophyll content for did not significantly affect carbon stock. The physicochemical parameters of the environment in this study supported the growth of both plant species.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop an evaluative-process learning tool integrated with the conceptual-problem-based learning (CPBL) model to train students' critical thinking skills. The learning tools developed (lesson plans, textbooks, worksheets, and critical thinking test instruments) were evaluated for validity and Effectiveness in training students' critical thinking skills at the higher education level. Validity evaluation is carried out on content and construct validity aspects. This is done through a focus group discussion (FGD) mechanism involving four expert validators. Furthermore, the Effectiveness of the developed learning tools is evaluated by implementing them in the classroom. The experimental design (intact-group comparison) involved a sample group from the State Islamic University of Mataram. The experimental group was taught by evaluative-process learning tools integrated with the CPBL model, while lectures and discussions taught the control group. Critical thinking data were collected using a valid essay test instrument, and the results were analyzed. The validity test results show that all the elements that make up the learning tools in the aspect of content and construct validity have been declared valid. Furthermore, at the implementation stage in the classroom, evaluative-process learning tools integrated with the CPBL model have been effective in training students' critical thinking skills compared to teaching that relies on lectures and discussion. This Effectiveness is based on two aspects, (1) the conceptual framework of the CPBL model, which is constructed and arranged from a problem-based learning model with five learning steps, namely prior knowledge, organize, investigate, analyze, and evaluation; (2) the concept of evaluative-process which is integrated with the CPBL model. These two aspects support capacity in training students to think critically.
