Abstract

Ineffective teaching is one of the factors influencing the low level of students' critical thinking skills. Rooted in local wisdom, ethno-PjBL integrates project-based learning principles with ethnopedagogical values, requiring students to think critically. This research aims to determine the impact of the ethno-PjBL on students' critical thinking skills in addressing real-life environmental issues. This research uses a quasi-experimental method and a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design. Up to 100 of the 353 tenth-grade students at one of the upper secondary schools in Banda Aceh were selected using purposive sampling techniques. This research used 17 multiple choice with written justification tests, developed based on Ennis’s critical thinking indicators. An independent sample t-test was used to assess the intervention effect and n-gain was used to measure the score improvement. Data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test to assess the intervention effect and n-gain to calculate score improvement. The findings prove a significant effect (0.010 < 0.05) and a higher n-gain in the experimental group (0.46) compared with the control group (0.25), indicating that the ethno-PjBL effectively fosters students' critical thinking skills. Integrating indigenous knowledge in project-based learning should be encouraged to nurture students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

The increasingly complex problem of plastic waste needs to be addressed with more creative educational strategies so that people become more aware of the importance of preserving the environment. This study aims to describe the level of environmental awareness among FKIP students at Syiah Kuala University as future 21st-century teachers, covering knowledge, attitudes, and behavior, and to measure the effectiveness of learning interventions in increasing students' environmental awareness. This research uses a quantitative descriptive research method with initial data collection. The instruments used included a questionnaire that had been validated by experts to ensure data validity and reliability, and the test results showed that the instrument was suitable for use in the study. The research results indicate that the overall level of environmental awareness among students is still in the moderate category. A total of 58.99% of students' knowledge falls into the very low category, and 46.07% of students' attitudes are also in the same category. Meanwhile, in terms of behavior, 48.88% of students actually showed a high category. This finding indicates an imbalance between the cognitive, affective, and conative aspects of students' environmental awareness. To measure the effectiveness of awareness-raising efforts, a post-test was also conducted after the learning intervention, which showed a significant improvement, with the average knowledge score of students reaching 79%, attitudes 85%, and behavior 89%. Therefore, a strategy is needed to improve the quality of education thru stronger integration into the environmental education curriculum

Abstract

The productivity of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) can be improved through the utilization of locally available organic materials, such as a combination of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) derived from Leucaena leucocephala leaves and rice husk ash. This research aimed to evaluate the effects of the combination of these two organic inputs on the growth and chlorophyll content of okra plants. The experiment employed a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) 4×4 with two factors: concentration of Leucaena-based LOF (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) and dosage of rice husk ash (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%), each with three replications. Observed parameters included plant height, fresh weight, and total chlorophyll content. The results showed that the LOF treatment, rice husk ash treatment, and their interaction had significant effects (p < 0.05) on all three parameters. The combination of 30% LOF and 15% rice husk ash (A3B3) produced the highest values for plant height (62.53 cm), fresh weight (158.93 g), and total chlorophyll content (25.72 mg/L). These findings indicate that the combined application of LOF and rice husk ash can effectively enhance physiological efficiency and vegetative growth in okra plants.

Abstract

The limited phosphorus content in liquid organic fertilizer derived from Samanea saman (Jacq.) Merr. leaves may constrain its effectiveness in promoting the growth of mung bean (Vigna radiata L.). This study aimed to improve the fertilizer's efficacy by incorporating bone meal as a phosphorus source and applying biochar to enhance nutrient retention and soil properties. A 2×5 factorial experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), with two treatment factors: biochar application (0 and 100 g per polybag) and fertilizer formulations (control, 100% S. saman leaf extract, and combinations of S. saman leaf extract with bone meal at 25%, 50%, and 75% ratios). Growth parameters observed included plant height, number of leaves, and dry weight. The combination of 50% S. saman leaf fertilizer and 50% bone meal, supplemented with biochar, produced the highest performance, with a plant height of 65.72 cm, 22.06 leaves per plant, and a dry weight of 75.82 g. In contrast, treatments without biochar exhibited significantly lower growth. These findings demonstrate that the synergistic application of bone meal and biochar can substantially enhance nutrient availability and improve the performance of organic fertilizers in supporting mung bean growth.
