Abstract

This study examines how Shopee Live triggers consumptive behavior among boarding house students by focusing on the roles of character and self-control. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that Shopee Live encourages impulsive buying through emotional engagement, interactive features, and promotional pressure. Students with strong self-control and positive character traits tend to make more rational purchasing decisions, while those with weaker self-regulation are more susceptible to unplanned purchases. In addition, peer influence in boarding environments strengthens consumptive tendencies. This study concludes that consumptive behavior in live streaming commerce is shaped by the interaction between digital stimuli and internal psychological factors, highlighting the importance of self-control and character awareness in promoting responsible online shopping behavior.

Abstract

Teaching English to children aged 3–5 years presents unique challenges related to their developmental characteristics, particularly in non-formal early childhood education settings. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by English teachers in teaching young learners at PPA Krammer Hilina'a. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed to obtain an in-depth understanding of classroom practices and teacher experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations involving one teacher/student practitioner responsible for teaching English for Young Learners (EYL). The data were analyzed thematically to identify key challenges and instructional responses. The findings reveal that teachers face significant pedagogical difficulties, including children’s limited ability to understand abstract concepts, rapid memory loss, and interference from the first language (L1). Classroom management emerged as the most prominent challenge, characterized by short attention spans, high energy levels, and ineffective transitions between learning activities. To address these challenges, teachers implemented visual-based learning strategies, such as flashcards and presentation slides, combined with emotional and patient interaction and direct engagement with students. These approaches contributed to improved learner participation and confidence. The study concludes that teaching English to very young learners in non-formal educational contexts requires developmentally appropriate strategies and strong classroom management skills. Therefore, targeted training in early childhood pedagogy and English for Young Learners is recommended to enhance teaching effectiveness.

Abstract

Writing is a crucial skill in English language learning that requires the integration of linguistic, cognitive, and organizational components, making it one of the most challenging areas for many EFL students. This study aims to analyze the writing difficulties encountered by third-semester English major students in producing descriptive texts and to identify the linguistic aspects contributing to these challenges. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected from students’ written descriptive texts and questionnaire responses. Students were asked to compose a descriptive text based on a given topic, while the questionnaire explored their perceptions of writing difficulties. The findings reveal four dominant categories of difficulties: grammatical problems, limited vocabulary, weak text organization, and challenges in developing ideas. Grammar emerged as the most problematic aspect, with frequent errors in tenses, subject–verb agreement, and articles. Vocabulary limitations led to repetitive and inaccurate word choices, while organizational issues appeared in unclear generic structure, weak coherence, and minimal use of cohesive devices. Students also struggled to elaborate ideas, resulting in brief and underdeveloped descriptions. The questionnaire results supported the text analysis, indicating that grammar, vocabulary, idea generation, and organization were perceived as their main challenges. Overall, the study concludes that the writing difficulties experienced by students are influenced by linguistic limitations and insufficient understanding of genre conventions. These findings emphasize the need for integrated and process-oriented writing instruction focusing on grammatical accuracy, vocabulary enrichment, genre awareness, and pre-writing strategies to support students in improving their descriptive writing performance.

Abstract

This study examines the importance of high-quality teaching materials, particularly textbooks, in achieving English language learning objectives in Indonesia. Textbooks play a crucial role in the Merdeka Curriculum. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the feasibility of the English textbook “English for Nusantara” for eighth-grade junior high school students at SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Barat, by evaluating its content against Brian Tomlinson's 16 criteria for teaching materials. Employing a Qualitative approach with content analysis on Chapters 1-5, the findings revealed that the textbook substantially meets the criteria, with 14 criteria fulfilled and a high match percentage of 87.5%, placing it in the "Good" category. The two less-fulfilled criteria concerned drawing students’ attention to linguistic features and specific aspects of right-left brain stimulation. Overall, the results indicate the textbook is of adequate and effective quality, providing a systematic structure for grammar and vocabulary, and containing relevant, varied, and high-impact activities. This study contributes valuable input for educators and curriculum developers to improve the quality of teaching materials and optimize student learning outcomes in English.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students' perspectives on TikTok content created by Nias creators that has the potential to weaken the public image of the Nias community. This study uses a qualitative approach with a qualitative descriptive design. The research participants consisted of 15 fifth-semester students from the English Education Study Program at Nias University, who were purposively selected from a total of 37 students. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and supported by analysis of relevant TikTok content. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively by presenting the results in the form of descriptive narratives. The results showed that students viewed the TikTok content studied as containing elements of inappropriate conversation, coarse language, and violations of social norms that had the potential to form negative perceptions of Nias cultural identity. Students also emphasized the importance of creators' responsibility in representing regional culture and language in the digital space.

Abstract

This study explores third-semester students’ expectations and actual experiences of group work in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning within an English Education Study Program in higher education. Employing a qualitative descriptive case study design, the research involved ten third-semester students (five males and five females) selected through purposive sampling based on their prior experience with collaborative learning. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that most participants held positive expectations of group work, particularly regarding increased confidence, reduced anxiety, and greater engagement in English learning. These expectations were largely confirmed in practice, indicating an alignment between students’ expectations and classroom realities at the affective level. However, the study also identified important tensions, as unequal participation and inconsistent use of English persisted during group interactions. While group work functioned as an effective scaffold that encouraged participation, it did not automatically ensure equitable contribution or sustained target-language use. By explicitly contrasting students’ expectations with their lived classroom experiences, this study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of group work as a pedagogical strategy whose effectiveness depends on structured design and teacher scaffolding. The findings offer important implications for EFL teacher education and collaborative learning practices in higher education.

Abstract

This study examines undergraduate students’ perceptions of the cultural appropriateness, symbolic meaning, and cross-cultural awareness of inner graduation attire in Indonesian graduation ceremonies, particularly in comparison with practices abroad. A descriptive quantitative design was employed, involving twenty undergraduate students from Nias University selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a closed-ended questionnaire consisting of sixteen Likert-scale statements and analyzed by converting responses into percentages categorized as high, moderate, or low perception levels. The findings indicate that students generally hold strong and consistent perceptions regarding the cultural appropriateness and formality of inner graduation attire in the Indonesian context. Traditional clothing such as kebaya and batik is widely regarded as suitable, reflecting respect for academic institutions, cultural norms, and national identity. Participants also recognize the symbolic role of graduation attire in expressing cultural pride and belonging. However, some variation emerges in views of attire as a symbol of academic achievement, suggesting a distinction between symbolic representation and actual performance. Students demonstrate cross-cultural awareness by acknowledging differences between Indonesian and foreign graduation practices while expressing a preference for preserving local cultural values. Given the small, single-institution sample, the findings are context-specific and should be interpreted cautiously

Abstract

This research aims to find out if there is a significant correlation between English speaking skill and self-confidence among grade XI students in a senior high school. The research started because in class, some students speak English well but feel shy in public, while others look confident but has low speaking skills. This research used a quantitative method with a correlational design. The sample was 35 students from class XI Ki Hadjar Dewantara. Data were collected through a speaking test to measure English speaking skill and a Likert scale questionnaire for self-confidence. Data were analyzed using parametric tests, including normality test, Pearson Product Moment correlation, and simple linear regression in SPSS version 25. All instruments were tested for validity and reliability before use. The result showed the correlation value (r) was 0.022 with a significance of 0.901 (>0.05). This means there is no significant correlation between English speaking skill and self-confidence. Field observations also showed that students who speak well are not always confident, and confident students do not always have good speaking skills. It can be concluded that speaking skill and self-confidence are separate aspects and need to be developed on their own. This research may help teachers and researchers plan better English learning strategies.
