Abstract

This study explores the perceptions and experiences of English education students regarding vocabulary mastery, with a focus on the strategies they employ, the challenges they encounter as well as how they overcome those challenges. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive design, the research captures detailed and nuanced insights into participants’ perceptions and experiences. Ten undergraduate students majoring in English Education were purposefully selected as participants to provide in-depth perspectives. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, which encouraged open discussions while addressing themes closely aligned with the research objectives. This study reveals that students face challenges in memorization, contextual usage, retention, and motivation. To overcome these challenges, they employ strategies such as repetition, using vocabulary in meaningful contexts, and incorporating multimedia resources. Additionally, students reported using fun and interactive methods, like songs and movies, to stay motivated and engaged. The findings highlight the importance of regular practice, contextual learning, and engaging methods to improve vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of environment-based education on students' mastery of vocabulary at Junior High School. English, recognized as a global language, is essential for both educational and career advancement. However, Indonesian students often struggle with vocabulary acquisition. To evaluate how the integration of environmental elements into English learning can enhance vocabulary skills, this research adopts a qualitative approach. It employs observation, interviews, and documentation as key methods of assessment. The study involved an English teacher and 23 seventh-grade students, with a sample of 15 students selected for the research. The findings reveal that students faced challenges in retaining vocabulary due to conventional teaching methods and insufficient exposure to context. However, after introducing environment-based learning—where students observed and described objects in their school surroundings—they showed remarkable progress in vocabulary retention, comprehension, and application. This approach not only boosted their language skills but also heighted their motivation, engagement, and awareness of the environment. Overall, the results indicate that environment-based education is an effective strategy for enhancing vocabulary mastery, making the learning experience more meaningful and relevant to students' everyday lives.

Abstract

In response to the transformation of education in the digital era and the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka, this study aims to develop digital writing materials using Book Creator for eighth grade students at SMP Swasta Kristen BNKP Gunungsitoli. This research seeks to identify the level of appropriateness of the developed digital writing materials and to evaluate how effectively these materials support students’ writing skills. The study employed the ADDIE development model, which consists of five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The result of this study is an interactive digital book titled Interactive Writing for Creative Thinkers, which was developed to address students’ writing challenges and to enhance their engagement, creativity, and digital literacy. The findings from the pre-test and post-test demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ writing skills, particularly in the areas of vocabulary, sentence structure, and writing mechanics. Additionally, student evaluations indicated highly positive perceptions regarding the book’s ease of use, interactivity, and content relevance, further supporting its appropriateness for classroom implementation. Overall, the study confirms that contextually designed digital teaching materials, which are aligned with students’ actual learning needs, are not only appropriate for use in the classroom but also essential in promoting active learning and meeting the demands of 21st-century education.

Abstract

This study focuses on the development of a Nias culture-based English textbook designed to enrich 21st century skills in vocational high school students. The problem underlying this study is the low relevance of the teaching materials used to the local cultural context making it difficult for them to understand the material in depth. Using a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDIE model, the textbook was designed, developed, implemented, and evaluated in terms of feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness. The effectiveness of the product is tested using a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group posttest-only design. The research sample was determined using cluster sampling to represent students in different class groups. Research subjects included an experimental class, control class and an additional school as the dissemination class. Data is collected through expert validation, implementation, questionnaires, and learning outcome tests. The validation results showed high feasibility scores from four experts (100% culture and material, 95.55% language, 85.71% design). The developed book was also found to be practical and effective in enhancing students’ 21st-century skills, particularly in communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. The posttest results revealed clear improvements in students’ learning outcomes compared to the control class. Moreover, both teachers and students responded positively, emphasizing the textbook’s relevance to local culture and its usefulness in the learning process. Therefore, the Nias culture-based English textbook can be concluded as a feasible, practical, and effective learning resource that integrates local wisdom, strengthens students’ cultural identity, and fosters essential 21st-century competencies.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the evaluation and supervision of the learning process as an effort to increase teacher professionalism in schools. The method used is a qualitative research method with a type of field research. The research locations in this study were MA Darul Hikmah Jember, MA Fatihul Ulum Al Mahfudz, MAN 1 Jember, and MAN 2 Jember. The findings in this study are that, in general, the implementation of academic supervision at MA Darul Hikmah Jember, MA Fatihul Ulum Al Mahfudz, MAN 1 Jember, and MAN 2 Jember has been going well.
