Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research aims to explore the history of the arrival of the first wave of Ahlul Bait in Aceh-Sumatra. The wave will technically relate to the history of the founding of the earliest Islamic sultanates in the Aceh-Sumatra between the 8th and 9th centuries AD, such as the Jeumpa sultanate and the Perlak sultanate. The research is based on historical interpretation in the form of classical Acehnese and Malay manuscripts from tertiary historical sources. However, the research still leave problems in the detailed area which are not yet completely accurate and precise. So, even though we have found a common thread that can be mutually agreed upon, attention to areas of detail that are not yet completely accurate and precise, still needs to continue to be explored and its findings improved. As for the shortcomings, they can be remedied by reading the narrative interpretations of classical texts more holistically and coherently to produce narratives that are clearer and clearer in their construction, both in terms of chronology and in terms of interpretations of the agents or apparatus of the establishment of the sultanates.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the process of Islamization in Sundanese Tatars through a cultural approach as a complement to the limitations of historical evidence, focusing on the role of myths, proverbs, and proverbs in reflecting the cultural readiness of the community The research uses a qualitative method with a cultural analysis approach to Sundanese mythical texts and proverbs that represent the value system and mentality of the community. The findings show that Sundanese myths and proverbs contain values that describe the psychological and cultural readiness of the community to accept the teachings of Islam. The internality of these values shows that Islamization in Sundanese Tatars occurred through a subtle, integrated, and organically occurring cultural process in people's lives. Islamization in Sundanese Tatars does not only depend on historical figures and events, but also on the acceptance of people's culture as reflected in oral traditions. The cultural approach has proven to be able to fill the historiographical gap and provide a more complete understanding of the process of spreading Islam in this region.

Abstract

The Palestinian issue is one of the most complex conflicts in contemporary global politics, reflecting systemic injustice and the failure of international institutions to uphold human rights and national sovereignty. As a country born from the decolonization struggle, Indonesia has consistently voiced support for Palestinian independence, both through diplomatic, humanitarian, and international forums. This article reveals that President Soekarno's speech at the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference (AAC) was not just a symbolic statement, but became the ideological and moral foundation for Indonesia's foreign policy towards Palestine. Through a qualitative approach with a historical-diplomatic method, this article analyzes the content of Soekarno's speech, KAA documents, and the practice of Indonesian diplomacy from the early era of independence to the post-Reformation period. This research demonstrates that the values of anti-colonialism, South-South solidarity, and global justice, as conveyed by Soekarno, remain the foundation of Indonesia's stance towards Palestine to this day. The scientific contribution of this study lies in strengthening the post-colonial perspective in the study of Indonesian diplomacy and affirming the importance of ideological heritage in shaping the direction of value-based foreign policy.

Abstract

This article examines changes in social mobility in Bogor following the introduction of railways in the early twentieth century by positioning rail transport as a key infrastructure in the process of colonial urbanization. The study demonstrates that railway construction in Bogor cannot be understood merely as a technical innovation in transportation, but rather as an economic–political instrument that integrated the hinterland into the administrative and economic networks of the Dutch East Indies. Using a historical approach grounded in colonial archival sources and secondary references in the form of peer-reviewed academic articles and credible media reports, this research analyzes the relationship between railway development, social mobility, and the transformation of urban space during the period 1900–1930. The findings show that railways operated as a colonial mobility regime that simultaneously expanded horizontal mobility among indigenous populations—through intensified spatial movement and occupational diversification—while failing to open vertical mobility in an equitable manner. Access to education, official positions, and social status remained constrained by colonial structures based on race and class. In addition, railway lines and stations functioned as urban nodes that reconfigured the spatial organization of Bogor according to the logic of timetables, economic extraction, and colonial administration. Consequently, mobility and urbanization in Bogor were produced in a differential manner through colonial infrastructure that both accelerated movement and normalized social inequality. This article argues that railways functioned as a politically charged agent of social change and contributes to the historiography of colonial transportation in Indonesia through an analytical lens centered on mobility, power, and social stratification.

Abstract

Abstract

Syair Burung Pungguk is one of the classical Malay poems depicting the spiritual and existential struggle of humanity through the symbolism of longing and solitude. Through the lens of Islamic World Area Studies, this text can be read as a representation of the transformation of Islamic values rooted in the local experiences of the Malay society in Southeast Asia. This study applies a hermeneutic-cultural approach with the principle of defamiliarization to reinterpret the poem within the Islamic cultural context of the region. The analysis was conducted on the translated version Syair Burung Pungguk by Arief Rahman and Didik Purwanto (2021, National Library Press) by considering the textual side through the concept of defamiliarization combined with the perspective of Islamic Regional Studies. The findings suggest that the symbolism of the owl and the moon reflects the unique Malay-Islamic religiosity centered on mystical longing for the Divine, reaffirming that literature serves as an arena where universal Islamic teachings are aesthetically and culturally localized. Thus, this poem is not merely a literary artifact but a site of encounter between the universal principles of Islam and the cultural expressions of the Malay world rooted in Sufi sensibility.

This research focuses on a philological study aimed at unraveling and understanding the process of Walangsungsang's search for Islam, the main character in the manuscript "Lampahing Para Wali Kabeh." This manuscript holds significant historical and religious value in Javanese culture. The objective of this study is to analyze and interpret the philological context surrounding Walangsungsang's journey in comprehending Islam. The research methodology involves a critical analysis of the text of "Lampahing Para Wali Kabeh" and related historical sources. A philological approach is applied to comprehend Walangsungsang's role within the social, cultural, and religious context of the past. Textual and linguistic analyses are used to gain profound insights into the Islamic teachings presented in this manuscript. The findings reveal that Walangsungsang is a character on a quest for meaning and truth within Islam. His spiritual journey is reflected through the events he experiences and dialogues with the "Wali Kabeh" (The Enlightened Ones). The manuscript also portrays how Islamic teachings were conveyed within Javanese culture during that period. This philological study contributes to a deeper understanding of the process of Islam's adaptation and assimilation in Javanese society in the past. Additionally, this research provides insights into the role of literature in conveying religious messages and spiritual values to the present generation

Abstract

After the Padri War (1803-1837), Tuanku Imam Bondjol was exiled by the Dutch colonial government to Minahasa and Manado. During his exile in Manado, his son, Naali Sutan Caniago, who accompanied Tuanku Imam Bondjol during his exile, wrote a manuscript about his father's struggle. This manuscript is called the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol Manuscript, which is a single manuscript (codex unicus). In general, this manuscript contains a summary of the history of the Padri War in West Sumatra in the 19th century. It contains Tuanku Imam Bondjol's memoirs, his thoughts, and notes on the Padri war. In this study, the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript is examined using philological and historical methods. This manuscript has been transliterated and translated by Safnir Abu Naim, However, this study will trace the philological stages carried out on the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript to demonstrate its originality and authenticity. The problem examined in this study is how the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript stands as a historical source of the Padri War. To that end, a textual study of the translation of the manuscript was conducted using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method modeled by Teun A. Van Dijk. This study also uses the Historical Method with the ultimate goal of compiling a historiography of the struggle of Tuanku Imam Bondjol and the Padri War. From the results of the study, it is concluded that the Tambo Tuanku Imam Bondjol manuscript is an authentic source of the Padri War, a first-hand historical source originating from indigenous records. Before the discovery of this manuscript, sources for the Padri War were generally only from colonial archives.
