Abstract

ABSTRACTThis thesis discusses about personality of a character named Teresa in a novel entitled The Death Cure by James Dashner by using one of Sigmund Freud's personality theory of id, ego, superego. The researcher uses a qualitative methodology and a psychological approach in this thesis. Furthermore, the theory of factors influencing human personality by Abraham Lahey is also applied to this thesis. The result of this study indicates that the representation of Teresa's personality is grouped into two phases based on the plot of this novel. In the first phase, Teresa has id and ego, however, she does not have the superego. Her id is very strong. Therefore, Teresa’s personality is dominated by the id which makes her ego neglected due to the absence of superego. In the second phase, Teresa has the three of personality structures (id, ego, superego) and those work each other. Moreover, Teresa's personality which is grouped into two phases, the first phase is before memory restoration, and the second phase is after memory restoration, is influenced by external factors or it is known as nurture. Nurture influences Teresa's personality in both phases by identifying at the physical environment and the social environment that is around and experienced by Teresa.

Abstract

Every language varies and has its own characteristics. The varieties can be seen in terms of age, gender, region, social class, ethnicity, etc. One of the characteristics of a language is its grammatical features. An example of language variety that is affected by ethnic group is African American Vernacular English (AAVE). This research aimed to analyze the grammatical features of AAVE through Oscar’s utterances in Shark Tale film and the variables that influence his AAVE utterances by using Wolfram and Rickford & Rickford’s Theory. Out of four AAVE grammatical features, the researcher found that Oscar produced three of them which are verb phrase, negation, and nominal. Question formation feature is not found in Oscar’s utterances. AAVE grammatical features that appeared in Oscar’s utterances are copula/auxiliary absence, habitual be, double modals, subject-verb-agreement, ain’t, multiple negation, plural noun suffix–s deletion, and y’all. Abstract

Background: English literacy skills play a vital role in students’ academic and social development. Yet, many junior high school students still struggle with reading and writing due to limited vocabulary and exposure. Objective: This community service program, titled “Don’t Worry, English is Easy,” aimed to strengthen the English literacy skills—particularly reading and writing—of seventh-grade students at SMPN 7 Loa Kulu, Kutai Kartanegara Regency. Methods: The program was conducted by lecturers and students from the Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Mulawarman. The implementation involved observation, documentation, and literacy-based training using contextual materials such as “Introducing Myself,” “My Family,” and “My School.” Results: The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties with spelling and constructing English sentences. Common spelling errors were caused by phonetic interference and limited understanding of English orthography. External factors such as family background, lack of learning facilities, and minimal English exposure outside the classroom also contributed to these challenges. However, students showed increased motivation, confidence, and active participation throughout the training sessions. Conclusion: The program effectively enhanced students’ enthusiasm and engagement in learning English. It is recommended that similar community service programs be implemented continuously through collaboration between universities and schools to strengthen students’ English proficiency holistically.

Abstract

Abstract Language is influenced by social differences that appear in society, such as age, gender, religion, power, economic status, and ethnicity. Those social factors produce different kinds of language which is called as variety. Ethnicity as one of the social factors influences the emergence of variety that comes from African American people who lives in United States of America. The variety is called as African American Vernacular English (AAVE). AAVE is often used in literary works to represent African American ethnicity as occurred in Shrek movie through the character of Donkey. This research focused on analyzing the grammatical characteristics of Donkey’s AAVE utterances and the factors underlying them through descriptive qualitative research. The result of this research showed that Donkey’s AAVE utterances have three AAVE’s grammatical features which are verb phrase, negation, and nominal and all four factors which consist of social class, gender, age, and linguistic environment underlying those grammatical characteristics. AAVE grammatical characteristics that appeared in Donkey’s utterances are Copula/Auxiliary Absence, Invariant be, Subject-Verb-Agreement, Other Verb Phrase Structure, ain’t, multiple negation, ain’t with but, and second person plural y’all. Those grammatical characteristics are influenced by Donkey’s working class status, his male gender, teenage age, and his mood when the utterances were taking place whether he was comfortable or not. AAVE grammatical characteristics indicate that Donkey’s character represents African American ethnicity through his utterances and the factors underlying them show that Donkey’s variety is influenced by the social factors that appear in society.
