Abstract

This study aims to identify the impact of implementing the PBL (Problem Based Learning) learning model assisted by digital comic media on students' critical thinking skills in class IV photosynthesis material at State Elementary Schools. The method used is a pre-experimental quantitative approach with one group pretest-posttest as the design. all fourth grade students at SDN Banyuurip, totaling 20 students, were used as the population in this study. The sampling technique used was saturated sampling, involving all 20 students. Data was collected through tests in the form of essay questions. Data analysis includes several tests, including testing the test instrument to ensure the validity and reliability of the questions. The normality test uses the one-sample Shapiro-Wilk test formula, with the data declared to be normally distributed at a significance level of 5% (0.05). The prerequisite test involves a homogeneity test to check the similarity of variance between the two groups, and the hypothesis is tested using a paired sample t-test. . The results of the study show that there is a significant impact of using the PBL learning model with digital comic media on the critical thinking abilities of fourth grade students at state elementary schools in photosynthesis material. This was proven by the results of the paired sample t-test which showed a sig value. (2-tailed) is worth 0.000, therefore H0 is rejected while Ha is accepted.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the impact of the Jarimatika method on the multiplication skills of 2nd-grade students at Banjarbanggi 2 Elementary School. The Jarimatika method is a mathematics teaching technique that uses fingers as aids, making it easier for students to understand multiplication concepts. This research employs a quantitative approach with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consists of 16 students, and data were collected through tests. Data analysis included prerequisite tests, such as the normality test, and hypothesis testing using paired sample t-tests with SPSS 24. The normality test prerequisite is considered normal if the sig value is > 0.05. The results indicate that the Jarimatika method has an impact, as evidenced by a significant improvement in students' multiplication skills after being taught using the Jarimatika method, shown by the paired sample t-test result with a sig value of 0.000 < 0.05. The use of this method has a significant impact, improving the multiplication skills of 2nd-grade students at Banjarbanggi 2 Elementary School. The Jarimatika method can create a more enjoyable learning process and enhance students' arithmetic skills.

The data were obtained from two sorts of advertisement which had the same theme in spite of different sources. One was from SMK Budi Warman 1 Jakarta Timur and another one was from public government by Kemendikbud. The data were analyzed by Miles and Huberman`s concept within the procedure of discourse analysis. The findings of the study were 1) there were four types of language functions as referential, emotive, conative and poetic functions, and 2) the purposes of the advertisements in GLN were mainly to persuade and inform the viewers about the importance of literacy to improve their knowledge.

Abstract

Lexical diversity is one of the language tools to measure varied words or vocabulary produced by learners in a text both spoken and written. This research aims to investigate the lexical diversity of children narratives produced by children orally. The research design of this research was a case study supported by quantitative data. Meanwhile, the subjects of this research are seven children around 6-9 years old. In collecting data, the researchers employed narrative storytelling based on a picture which is drawn by the subjects. In analyzing data, TTR (Type-Token -Ratio) was used to measure the lexical diversity gained from the subject while the theory was used to explain the phenomena. Based on the findings, it is found that (1) older children have higher lexical diversity than the younger ones, (2) younger children produced higher lexical frequency (word tokens) than the older ones (3) individual variations caused an anomaly of the result in which older children were expected to have higher lexical frequency but the result showed the reverse. Keywords: Lexical Diversity, Children, Oral Narratives, Case Study.

Abstract

The study aims to identify and analyze the specific English language learning needs of students in higher education in Home Economics based on the perceptions of graduate users. Utilizing a quantitative approach, the research employs a questionnaire as the primary data collection tool. This questionnaire was administered to graduate users of the Home Economics Program at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Negeri Semarang, with respondents including twelve individuals from diverse sectors such as schools, government offices, private companies, and home industries or SMEs. The findings reveal that the need for English proficiency varies by sector. In educational settings, English is vital for understanding instructional materials and meeting global educational standards. For government offices, proficiency in English is essential for international collaboration, effective communication in meetings, and maintaining global partnerships. Private companies, particularly multinational corporations, rely on English for recruitment, daily operations, and interactions with international clients, even though incentives for language proficiency are often lacking. Meanwhile, in-home industries, although English is not yet a strict requirement, it is becoming increasingly important for online marketing, responding to international inquiries, and engaging with promotional media. As globalization and technological advancements continue to reshape these sectors, the study underscores the growing necessity of English proficiency. The findings highlight the critical role that English plays in enhancing professional effectiveness and competitiveness, making this research an essential contribution to curriculum development and workforce readiness in an increasingly interconnected world.

Abstract

In measuring learners’ productivity in writing and speaking, there is a formulation known as syntactic and lexical complexity. This study investigates whether there is a difference in syntactic and lexical complexity between L1 and L2 writings or not. This study is quantitative research which employ Web-Based Lexical Complexity Analyser and Web-Based Syntactic Complexity Analyser in order to measure data. The current study results reveal that the p-value of three sub-components of lexical complexity is lower than 0.05 (LD=0.000, LS=0.036, and LV=0.000), which means a significant difference in lexical complexity between L1 and L2 writings. A similar result showed in syntactic complexity where four of five indices of comparing the syntactic complexity of two-language writings showed value <0.05. The p-value of comparing four indices of syntactic complexity such as MLS, DC/C, CP/C, and C/S is 0.006, 0.000, 0.038, and 0.002, respectively. However, the fifth indice, MLC (mean length of clause) shows a p-value >0.05, which means no significant difference between MLC of English writings and Indonesian writings. The study concluded that the students produce more lexical and syntactic complexity in their English writings than in their Indonesian writings.
