Abstract

Students’ problem-solving abilities are influenced by their self-confidence in learning mathematics. This study intends to investigate junior high school students' mathematics problem-solving abilities in terms of their self-confidence in the set content. Descriptive qualitative research methodology is employed. This research involved 32 students in 7th grade at SMP Negeri 2 Sukodadi, Lamongan. To focus on data analysis, 3 students were selected representing different levels of self-confidence, namely high, medium and low. Subject taking is based on the results of the scores on the self-confidence questionnaire that has been given. Questionnaires on self-confidence, tests of mathematical problem-solving abilities, and interview guidelines were the instruments employed. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there is a close relationship between self-confidence and mathematical problem-solving ability, that is, the higher the level of student self-confidence, the better the ability to solve mathematical problems. Conversely, if students’ self-confidence is lower, their mathematical problem-solving abilities will also be lower. This study emphasizes the importance of students' self-confidence to be grown in learning to support their mathematical problem-solving abilities.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the ability of high school students in solving HOTS-type questions in terms of initial abilities. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were three students of class X consisting of 1 high-ability student, 1 medium-ability student, and 1 low-ability student. Collecting data or information in this study using written tests and interviews. The written test was conducted twice, namely the initial ability test and the problem-solving test. The instrument used was a validated test and interview guide. The result of this study is that students who have high abilities turn out to have similarities with students who have moderate abilities, which are only able to solve problem number 1 with an analytical level (C4) even though they use different methods of solving. While students who have low abilities are not able to respond to the three questions correctly. In general, the ability of SMA Negeri 1 Baureno students in solving HOTS category questions is still below average. This is because they are not used to working on HOTS category questions at school. So far, teachers only give ordinary questions found in textbooks or worksheets.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' abilities with visual-spatial and logical-mathematical intelligence in solving contextual mathematical problems. This qualitative research involved two eighth-grade students from a junior high school, each with a background in logical-mathematical and visual-spatial intelligence. The task consisted of two questions that asked students to create two park designs and two alternative payment methods for the "Suroboyo Bus." These findings show both subjects’ complete fluency and flexibility indicators in creative thinking. Subjects exhibit the ability to generate diverse solution pathways and apply various problem-solving strategies. Furthermore, the creative thinking skills displayed by the subject contribute to their comprehensive understanding of mathematical concepts and foster deeper engagement with the subject. The analysis results show that students with logical-mathematical intelligence were able to solve the problems well and came up with various alternative answers that other students did not consider. Students with visual-spatial intelligence were able to solve the problems successfully but did not find ideas to search for alternative answers beyond what was already presented. These findings indicate that both students with visual-spatial and logical-mathematical intelligence were capable of solving the given contextual problems, although there is still room for improvement

Abstract

Many studies state that students' geometric problem-solving abilities in Indonesia are low. This research examines students' analogical reasoning in solving geometric problems in terms of their cognitive style. This descriptive qualitative research involves 32 class X high school students. The data collection methods used were tests, questionnaires, and interviews. The data analysis technique uses qualitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the analogical reasoning of students with a visualizer cognitive style was superior to the analogical sense of students with a verbalizer cognitive style in solving geometric problems. Students with a visualizer cognitive style can achieve four components of analogical reasoning: encoding, inferring, mapping, and applying. Students with a verbalizer cognitive style only achieve two parts: encoding and inferring. The implication of this research is the need for educators to identify each student's learning style, which can be done through initial learning assessments and providing differentiated learning stimuli to students according to their cognitive style. Strengthening students with a verbalizer cognitive style needs to be emphasized more during the mapping and applying process, including providing appropriate scaffolding and allowing students to verbally express problem-solving strategies, teaching material by showing problem concept maps, and increasing practice on more varied questions.
