Abstract

Problem-solving ability is an essential competence that needs to be developed in students to face real-life problems, particularly those related to environmental issues. This study aimed to analyze students’ problem-solving abilities on the topic of environmental change and conservation for Phase E at SMA N 3 Solok. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach. The research subjects were Phase E students of SMA N 3 Solok selected using a purposive sampling technique. The research instrument was a problem-solving ability test developed based on five indicators: defining the problem, examining the problem, planning solutions, implementing the plan, and evaluating the solution. The data were analyzed using percentage analysis techniques. The results showed that students’ problem-solving abilities were generally in the category of needing improvement. The indicator of defining the problem demonstrated better achievement compared to other indicators, while the indicators of examining the problem, planning solutions, implementing the plan, and evaluating the solution still require improvement. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a basis for developing learning strategies oriented toward improving students’ problem-solving abilities in the context of biology learning and sustainable environmental education. Keywords: problem-solving ability, environmental change, environmental conservation, Phase E, senior high school

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low critical thingking skills of students and the suboptimal application of health literacy in science learning. Learning that is still conventional causes student to be less active and unable to analyze and solve health problems independently. This study to analyze the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model based on health literacy on the critical thinking skills of eighth grade students of SMPN 21 Padang. The type of research used is quantitative with a quasi-eksperimental method and a non-equivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 32 students in each experimental and control class. The instruments used included critical thinking tests, observation sheets, and student respons questionnaires. The results showed that the PBL model based on health literacy had a significant effect on students' critical thinking skills. Observation of the implementation of the PBL model obtained a percentage of 96% with a very good category and student responses of 79% with a good category. The results of the hypothesis test using the t test obtained a value of t_count> t_table, namely 5.71> 2.00 so that was rejected and was accepted.

Abstract

The decline in student attention in biology learning is a serious challenge because it has an impact on low conceptual understanding and overall learning outcomes. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using Augmented Reality (AR) in improving students' biological attention. The method used is the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) by analyzing 30 articles from the Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, DOAJ, and Taylor and Francis databases published between 2019–2024. The research instrument is in the form of article analysis guidelines, while the data collection technique is carried out through screening inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed descriptively-qualitatively. The results of the study showed that the use of AR had a positive impact on increasing student attention both in terms of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional aspects. The conclusion of this study states that AR is an effective medium for improving attention in biology learning. It is recommended that the development of AR content continues to be improved and supported by adequate and sustainable teacher training.

Abstract

The ethnoscience study has become an important approach in revealing the relationship between local knowledge and modern scientific concepts, particularly in traditional food processing practices. One form of this local wisdom is reflected in a typical Minangkabau dish, dendeng pucuk ubi, which is developed in Nagari Simarasok. This study aims to analyze the ethnoscientific elements contained in the processing of dendeng pucuk ubi and to examine the scientific and cultural values underlying it. The method used is qualitative research with an ethnographic approach, employing observation techniques, in-depth interviews with local communities, and documentation. The results show that the processing of dendeng pucuk ubi is not merely a culinary activity but also contains scientific principles, including biological aspects (nutritional content of cassava leaves as a source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals), chemical aspects (changes in compounds during cooking and drying processes), and physical aspects (the influence of temperature and processing techniques on texture and shelf life). In addition, this practice reflects local wisdom values such as sustainable utilization of natural resources, togetherness in the cooking process, and preservation of the cultural identity of the Simarasok community. Therefore, dendeng pucuk ubi is valuable not only as a food product but also as a medium for integrating culture and science, which is relevant for the development of contextual learning. This research is expected to contribute to strengthening ethnoscience-based education as well as preserving traditional culinary heritage.

Abstract

Creative thinking and collaboration skills are important 21st-century competencies that need to be developed through science learning. However, observations in junior high schools in West Pasaman, Indonesia show that students' creative thinking skills are still low with an average of 47.875%, while collaboration skills have not developed optimally because there are still passive students in discussion and group work activities. This study aims to produce a valid, practical, and effective Citizen Science Project-based teaching module to improve students' creative thinking and collaboration skills in Ecology and Biodiversity material. This study is a research and development (R&D) using the Plomp model with research subjects of grade VII junior high school students. Data were collected through validation sheets, teacher and student practicality questionnaires, creative thinking skills tests, collaboration skills questionnaires, and observation sheets. Data analysis was carried out descriptively using percentages and inferential analysis through normality tests, homogeneity tests, Normalized Gain (N-Gain), and Independent Samples t-tests. The results of the study showed that the Citizen Science Project-based teaching module had a validity level of 92.88% with a very valid category, teacher practicality of 99% and student practicality of 92.25% with a very practical category. The module was also quite effective in improving creative thinking skills with an N-Gain value of 64.24% and had a positive influence on collaboration skills with a score difference of 12.56 on the questionnaire and 12.17 on the observation sheet between the experimental class and the control class. Thus, the Citizen Science Project-based teaching module is worthy of being used as an alternative science teaching material to improve students' creative thinking and collaboration skills.
