Abstract

Alopecia or hair loss is a quite disturbing case. It can occur in both women and men. In women, the most familiar reason for hair loss is telogen effluvium (TE)succeed by female pattern hair loss (FPHL) and chronic telogen effluvium (CTE). Telogen effluvium generally occurs at any age, it is caused by prematurely transition of anagen hairs to telogen hairs. It can be induced by several events such as physiologic or emotional stress or certain drugs. Meanwhile, female pattern hair loss is caused by increasing of 5?-reductase enzymes and androgen receptors in effected scalp. Chronic telogen effluvium is the shedding of telogen hairs that occur over 6 month with idiopathic cause. There are also other causes of hair loss in women such as alopecia areata (AA), trichotillomania, and traction alopecia.TE and CTE are treated by removing the triggering factors. Patients need to be informed and educated that it is self limited and usually resolve with time. For FPHL, the treatment includes minoxidil 2% solution, antiandrogen therapies and hair transplantation. Meanwhile, AA is treated by intralesional corticosteroid injection, psoralen and ultraviolet A (PUVA). In the other hand, women with trichotillomania and traction alopecia need counselling and education to change their behaviours. Abstract

Background: Estrogen has major role to control LDL levels in woman’s body, therefore if a woman experienced hypoestrogen condition usually during menopause phase, there is an increase of the LDL levels. Anthocyanin has similar structure with isoflavones, which have been widely studied and proven to be estrogenic. One of the food ingredients that is rich in anthocyanin is the peel of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus), so it is hoped that this red dragon fruit peels can be a source of phytoestrogens that can play a role in improving LDL levels in menopausal women. Aim: To determine the effect of red dragon fruit peel (Hylocereus polyrhizus) on Low Density Lipoprotein levels in menopause wistar rats. Method: This study was a purely experimental study with a randomized post-test only control group design with a sample of 27 female wistar rats that had fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study sample was divided into 3 (three) groups with each group consisting of 9 female wistar rats, namely the control group (P0), the ethanol extract of red dragon fruit peels at a dose of 60mg / 200grBB group (P1), and dose 90mg / 200grBB group (P2).Result: There was a significant difference between P0 and P1 so that between P0 and P2, meanwhile comparison between P1 and P2 showed only slight difference. Conclusion: The red dragon peel extract can control LDL levels, therefore it is possible to be a substitute of estrogen endogen in menopausal women.

Abstract

Background: Purple cabbage or also known as red cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata f. rubra) contains polyphenols, especially anthocyanin (cyanidin-3-diglucoside-5-glucoside). Anthocyanin has a protective effect against radical oxidative superoxide (ROS). Thus it can prevent skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation.Aim: The research aims to prove the effectivity of distribution of purple cabbage ethanol cream extract prevented the decrease of dermal collagens on Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) exposed to UV-B rays.Method: This research was arranged with the randomize post-test only control group design. 30 rats were divided into 6 groups containing 5 rats each, there are control group (P1) without distribution of any cream, Treatment Group (P2) with a distribution of base cream (placebo), (P3) sunblock 33 SPF, (P4) 5%, (P5) 10 %, and (P6) 20 % smeared by purple cabbage ethanol cream extract. All groups exposed to UV-B with a total dose of 840 mJ/cm2 for 4 weeks. Then a sampling rats skin was done for examining the level of collagen skin with Sirius red staining. The level of collagen was calculated by the percentage of the area of the pixel of collagen and was compared with the pixels of entire dermal tissues.Result: The result demonstrated that the mean of collagens in The First Group/P1 (57.74%) and P2 (60.84%) decreased more significantly than P3 (82.17%), P4 (68.23%), P5 (76.93%), and P6 (84.54%) following UV-B exposure. The Post Hoc result showed that there was no significant difference in the level of collagen in the control group and placebo group and the sunblock group with the purple cabbage’s ethanol cream extract group of 20% (p>0.05).Conclusion: the distribution of purple cabbage ethanol cream extract prevented the decrease of dermal collagens on male Wistar rats skin exposed to UV-B.
