Abstract

Character education in elementary schools plays a crucial role in shaping a young generation imbued with national spirit and independence. However, its implementation is fraught with challenges. This study aims to underscore the significance of integrating nationalism and independence values into education to address the increasingly concerning moral and character issues in Indonesia. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach through previous literature case studies, the research reveals that fostering nationalist character involves teaching Pancasila values, conducting flag ceremonies, and engaging in Scout activities. On the other hand, promoting independent character is achieved through contextual learning, educational visits, and promoting proficient use of the Indonesian language. Challenges include insufficient teacher comprehension, inadequate support for facilities and infrastructure, and the pervasive influence of globalization. Proposed solutions encompass integrating character education into the curriculum, instilling positive values, bolstering school culture, and enhancing teacher training. In conclusion, there is a pressing need for improved collaboration among schools, parents, and the community to nurture nationalist and independent character traits.

Abstract

The focus of this study is to explore how the practice of gotong royong contributes to the development of integrity and responsibility among students in schools. Gotong royong, a distinctive aspect of Indonesian culture, symbolizes collective effort. However, in contemporary times, this spirit of collective action is on the decline. Therefore, there is a pressing need for initiatives that promote collaboration to sustain its relevance. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach involving observations and interviews. Findings indicate that gotong royong activities, such as rotational class duties, competitions, group assignments, and Friday clean-up sessions, play a significant role in shaping students' character. These activities foster greater responsibility and honesty among students.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of shame and guilt culture in character education in elementary schools. The research method used was a literature study by analyzing journals related to shame culture, guilt culture, and character education. The results showed that shame culture tends to emphasize the importance of self-image and social acceptance, while guilt culture emphasizes individual conscience and internal moral principles. This difference affects various aspects of people's lives, including in the context of character education in elementary schools. Shame culture can encourage students to behave in accordance with social norms to avoid shame, while guilt culture can encourage students to behave ethically and responsibly based on conscience and moral principles. The implication of this finding is the need to pay attention to cultural aspects in the implementation of character education in primary schools so that it can be more effective and appropriate to the local context

Abstract

Multicultural education is an educational approach aimed at instilling the values of tolerance, equality, and appreciation for cultural, religious, ethnic, and social diversity. In Indonesia’s pluralistic context, multicultural education in elementary schools plays a crucial role in shaping students' character from an early age so they can coexist harmoniously. This study aims to identify the challenges and propose solutions for implementing multicultural education at the elementary level. The research employed a literature review method by examining various sources, including books, academic journals, and educational policy documents. The findings reveal several major challenges: limited teacher understanding of multicultural principles, lack of religiously diverse teaching staff, homogeneous student backgrounds, and insufficient training and culturally responsive teaching materials. Additionally, the digital era introduces new challenges in terms of media literacy and digital ethics among students. Solutions proposed include curriculum revision, continuous teacher training, development of inclusive learning materials, community and parental involvement, and the use of digital media based on multicultural values. Multicultural education must be applied systematically and become an integral part of the school’s vision and culture. In conclusion, multicultural education is not only essential for creating inclusive learning environments but also serves as the foundation for building a democratic, civil, and culturally rooted generation capable of facing global challenges with resilience.
