Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem caused by low intake of nutritious food, poor sanitation, and a long history of disease infection. One of the indirect factors causing stunting is water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Pekalongan as the city of batik, it is possible that batik industry waste containing heavy metals can disrupt the growth of children. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors of environmental sanitation association incidence of stunting among children in Pekalongan. This research is an analytic study with a case-control study design.  The population in this study were mothers who had toddlers aged 6-59 months with a total sample of 177 respondents. The sampling technique in this study is a non-probability sampling method, namely purposive sampling. Univariate bivariate and multivariate analysis with SPSS 20.0. The results of statistical tests showed that there was a relationship between Sewage (p=0.000; OR=5,096), light intensity (p=0.000; OR=9,404), vent area (p=0.000; OR=9.941), and the habit of opening windows (p=0.000; OR=27,215) with stunting. The prevalence of stunting in the city of Pekalongan is related to sewage ownership, lighting, ventilation and the habit of opening windows. It is suggested that the Pekalongan government use the Community Based Total Sanitation (CBTS) program to empower the community with regard to environmental sanitation. Abstract

Studies evidence links air pollution to increased risk of COVID-19 infection and severity during the pandemic. Nonetheless, those studies are unable to discuss specific pollutants, such as particulate matter, Sox, and NOx. This systematic literature review aimed to summarize the most recent studies on the links between pollutants and their effects on the respiratory system, in this case, mostly on COVID-19 patients. We searched using electronic databases (PubMed, Springer, ScienceDirect, and Sage) in May 2023. The keywords chosen were connected to respiratory diseases and air pollution. All relevant studies published in peer-reviewed journals between 2020 and 2023 and written in English were considered. We excluded letters and non-original articles. Relevant keywords were used to select papers. A total of 11 articles are eligible to be included in the present review study. It was reported that countries with a high prevalence of COVID-19 also have greater concentrations of surface air particles (PM10 and PM2.5) due to vehicle exhaust and industrial pollution. PM-virus aggregates spread easier across the lungs and the top respiratory system, facilitating viral attachment to the lung epithelium. This study found that tiny particles with an aerodynamic dimension fewer than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) or ten μm (PM10) have the most significant potential influence on the respiratory system compared to other pollutants.

Abstract

Dengue virus infection causes thrombocytopenia. Psidium guajava is widely used by people to increase platelet counts. This research aims to analyze in silico the molecular mechanisms of compounds in guava fruit in increasing platelets. The compounds in guava fruit were taken from Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases, which include secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, terpenoids, tannins, alkaloids, and fatty acids. Target proteins were predicted using PharmMapper. Protein interaction networks were created using STRING, visualized, and analyzed using Cytoscape. Potential target proteins were identified by topology, modularity, functional, and KEGG pathway analysis. Degree and betweenness centrality are parameters in topological analysis and the cluster with the highest score is selected as the functional module. The results showed that MAPK1, MAPK14, and AKT1 are involved in many inflammatory pathways, and MMP9 is a target protein directly involved in increasing vascular permeability. The compounds arjunolic acid, farnesene, beta-carotene, and alpha-linolenic acid inhibit MAPK1, citral, ellagic acid, palmitic acid, and oleanolic acid inhibit MAPK14, guaijaverin, pantothenic acid, and citric acid inhibit AKT1, guaijaverin and pantothenic acid inhibit MMP9. It was concluded that the bioactive compounds in guava fruit play a role in increasing platelets by inhibiting the MAPK, PI3K-Akt pathways, and leukocyte trans-endothelial migration, thereby inhibiting or reducing the production and expression of inflammatory mediators and vascular permeability.

Abstract

Tamarind are widely used as antioxidants, anti-diabetes, anti-hyperlipidemia, and anti-cholesterolemia. The aim of this research is to analyze the anti-hyperlipidemic activity of extracts of tamarind fruit pulp, seeds and leaves on the lipid profile of rats. Experimental research was designed with 20 male rats divided   Control (C), Tamarind leaves (TL), Tamarind fruit pulp (TF), and Tamarind seeds (TS) extracts, each 500 mg/kg of body weight. All of the groups were given standard feed and induced with lard at 3 ml/rat/day for 14 days. On day 15, the rats were continued to be induced with lard and were given extracts according to each group for 2 weeks. The data obtained such as rats’ body weight, level of cholesterol, HDL (high-density lipoprotein), LDL (low-density lipoprotein), triglycerides (TG) and Malondialdehyde (MDA)  were analyzed using anova (P<0.05) and the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results showed that each extract had a significant effect on cholesterol, HDL and MDA levels but not on body weight, LDL and triglycerides. Levels of MDA in the group with the extract were significantly lower than the control. Tamarind pulp, seeds and leaf extracts show antihyperlipidemic activity by reducing cholesterol and HDL levels. This can be the basis for using parts of the tamarind plant as a supplement for the community to maintain fat levels.

Abstract

Many studies report on the role of Phyllanthus niruri as an anti-inflammatory and there are variations in the results in every research, so a meta-analysis study is needed to obtain accurate results. This study aims to conduct a meta-analysis of the effect of Phyllanthus niruri as an anti-inflammatory. This study uses a meta-analysis research design with data collection from 12 databases. The screening process was carried out according to PRISMA, then analyzed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Version 3 (CMA3). Funnel plot and Egger’s test were used as methods to measure publication bias. The articles used were 438 articles from various research journals. After going through screening, as many as 5 articles were eligible to be incorporated in the meta-analysis. Data were analyzed using a random effect model to calculate standardized means difference (SMD). The cytokines analyzed were TNF-α and IL-6 because both were discussed in at least 3 studies. Phyllanthus niruri affected the reduction of inflammatory cytokines with an effect size of SMD on TNF-α is -17,611 (95% CI -29,347, -5,875; p=0.003) and IL-6 is -3,263 (95% CI -5,403, -1,222; p = 0.003). The results of this meta-analysis strengthen the concept/theory that Phyllanthus niruri has the potential as an anti-inflammatory by reducing the inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6. These results strengthen the scientific basis for the use of Phyllanthus niruri as a supplement for the community to prevent inflammation.
