Abstract

Occupational safety aboard ships depends critically on both the availability of and adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE). This study analyzes how to optimize the use of safety equipment to prevent accidents on board MV Sangiang and proposes managerial actions to strengthen crew discipline. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through interviews, observations, and document analysis involving selected officers and crew members. Findings reveal gaps between procedures and on-deck practice: two recorded incidents—eye irritation due to the absence of standard eye protection and a finger injury from not wearing appropriate gloves—indicate low PPE compliance, weak enforcement of discipline, and insufficient routine supervision. The analysis underscores that equipment adequacy, the effectiveness of safety management (including regular safety meetings), human resource quality, and procedural adherence are key determinants of accident prevention. Recommended improvements include task familiarization and work briefings, consistent officer supervision, enforcement of sanctions and recognition tied to discipline, and timely renewal of PPE to meet standards. These insights are expected to inform efforts to strengthen safety culture on similar passenger vessels.

Abstract

This study examines the causes of container damage on MV Ifama Mas at Belawan Port and proposes operational prevention measures. A qualitative case-study approach was used, combining field observations, crew/stevedore interviews, and a review of handling procedures. Descriptive analysis identified damage patterns and causal factors. Findings show that most damage occurred pre-loading—notably from the gate-in/handling stage at the origin port (Tanjung Priok)—due to incorrect chocking/blocking, insufficient pre-inspection, and rushed handling. Predominant damage types include dents, corrosion holes, and structural weaknesses on panels and end frames. Moreover, IMO standards and IICL criteria for inspection and lashing were not applied optimally, elevating risk during handling and stacking. Recommended actions include stricter pre-entry and pre-lift inspections (gate-in checklists and surveys), optimized stowage/yard stacking plans, targeted training for crane operators and checkers, and disciplined lashing oversight aligned with international standards. Implementing these measures is expected to reduce damage incidents, improve cargo safety, and enhance handling efficiency.

Abstract

Corrosion is a major issue for ships operating in high-salinity seawater environments. One of the most widely applied methods of corrosion prevention is cathodic protection using sacrificial anodes. This article presents a literature review on the effectiveness of various metals used as sacrificial anodes, including zinc (Zn), aluminum (Al), and magnesium (Mg). The review highlights that each metal has unique characteristics: zinc offers stable potential and moderate service life, aluminum provides high current capacity with lightweight properties, while magnesium delivers the highest protective potential but corrodes rapidly in seawater. The selection of sacrificial anode material depends on ship operating conditions, water resistivity, and economic considerations. This review serves as a reference for the maritime industry in designing effective and cost-efficient cathodic protection systems.

Abstract

The port is the first link and gateway in a logistics distribution between countries and islands. By using ports, logistics distribution becomes faster and more efficient than being done through flight paths which require relatively more expensive costs and require more land. The port will connect several modes of transportation and several parties involved in the logistics management of goods. Every form of entry and exit of goods through the port must follow the procedures and SOPs applicable within the area. One procedure that has an important influence is the regulation on the management of Ship Anchoring in a port. Ship Anchoring Management is an activity to regulate the traffic of ships that will unload and / or load in a port. The Ship Anchoring management process is also an important process that deserves attention because the process is a process that will connect directly the land, namely the port with the ocean, namely ships. All forms of bureaucracy will be carried out by supervisory officers, namely Syahbandar and port management. The bureaucracy involves official and legal complete information and information about goods or cargo to be transported or unloaded on ships or to ports. With the management of Ship Anchoring, of course, all guide service activities afterwards will be carried out systematically and regularly. The ship's docking management process on ships will also affect the loading and unloading time by stevedoring companies (PBM), warehousing rental time, and other costs in the form of operational loading and unloading activities. This study uses data analysis, namely the Analysis Hierarchi Process (AHP) with respondents in the form of informants from the Indonesian port of Tanjung Priok, related Syahbandar parties, field officers, and stevedoring company managers. With the AHP method, it will produce a priority scale of several problems found from collecting facts in the field. This study produces the most influential party of the problem of ship anchoring management in a ship that will dock at Tanjung Priok port, namely by the Tanjung Priok Port Syahbandar, while the factors that cause these problems are law enforcement factors and rules that apply when carrying out ship anchoring management at Tanjung Priok Port Jakarta.
