Abstract

This study aims to investigate the English Study Program students’ perceptions of online listening courses during the COVID-19 Pandemic at FKIP Universitas Riau. The subjects of this study were 89 students majoring in English Study Program in the academic year of 2020. This research is a mixed method study with explanatory sequential design. Researchers used surveys to collect quantitative data and were supported by qualitative data using interviews. For the research instrument, it was modified from Nurani and Widiati (2021) and Ha and Ngo (2021) with 32 items. The items were tested for their validity (r> r-table = 0.468) and reliability (r ≥ 0.80= 0.931). The results of the quantitative data in this study showed high average scores on students' perceptions of online listening courses involving the lecturer roles (3.11), courses (3.04), difficulty: technical section (2.98); the listening section (3.00) and the benefits (3.01). In line with that, the results of the qualitative data also show positive responses that students enjoyed online listening courses during the COVID-19 Pandemic despite having difficulties.

Abstract

This research aims to develop an interactive PowerPoint for learning vocabulary on crime and crime and social media material. The research subjects were 39 students majoring in English education at Riau University in the first year. Researchers apply Research and Development (R&D). The instruments used were interviews, material expert validation sheets, media expert validation sheets, and pedagogy expert validation sheets, as well as student response questionnaires. The research results obtained show that the average results of the media expert's assessment for interactive PowerPoint with crime and criminal and social media material was 89.4%, and the material expert's assessment for crime and criminal and social media material was 98.5% while the pedagogical expert's assessment for crime and crime and social media material, it received a score of 100%, which means it is classified as "very valid", then from the results of the student response questionnaire, a score percentage of 82.76% was obtained in the 'very appropriate' category for PowerPoint interactive for crime and criminal material and 83 .47% are in the 'very suitable' category for interactive PowerPoint on social media material. Therefore, the interactive PowerPoint was declared valid and suitable for use as a vocabulary learning medium for English language education students.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the ability of students in conducting oral presentations. An oral presentation is one of the skills in speaking. This research is descriptive quantitative and has only one variable, namely the students' oral presentation ability. The population of this study was taken from second-year students of one of the English study programs in Riau with a sample total of 34 students. Based on the results of the analysis, the researcher concluded that the average ability of second-year students of one of the English study programs in Riau in 2022/2023 has a good ability to do oral presentations. The results of the analysis showed that 18% of 34 students had very good presentation ability, 76% of 34 students had good presentation ability, and 6% of 34 students had fair presentation ability on average, and no students were in the poor category. The conclusion is that the oral presentation ability of students in the second year of one of the English study programs in Riau is in the good category.

Abstract

Students need to understand the meaning of various vocabularies that can support the learning process. With the importance of vocabulary mastery, this study aims to find out the increase in vocabulary mastery in seventh grade students from the effectiveness of PowerPoint as interactive media. This pre-experimental research used a group pretest and post-test. This test was conducted with 34 students from class 7A who were selected as samples through cluster random sampling. Based on the results obtained, the mean value of the pre-test was 60.58 and 81.67 on the post-test. Furthermore, the significance value (2-tailed) is 0.000, which is lower than 0.05. So it can be known that the effectiveness of PowerPoint as interactive media in increasing vocabulary mastery is accepted.
