Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to analyse English department students' attitudes towards their lecturers' code-switching at Universitas Riau and its perceived impact on learning motivation and English development. Employing a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 73 third-year students using a 30-item questionnaire adapted from AlQaysi (2019), which utilized a 5-point Likert scale. The questionnaire assessed three aspects of attitude: affective, behavioural, and cognitive. Data were analysed using SPSS 25 with descriptive analysis methods. Findings revealed that students generally held positive attitudes towards code-switching, particularly in the affective aspect (mean score 3.768), while exhibiting neutral attitudes in behavioural (mean score 3.341) and cognitive (mean score 3.456) aspects. The overall mean score of 3.521 indicated a positive attitude towards code-switching. This positive perspective, despite neutral scores in behavioural and cognitive areas, highlights the significant influence of students' favourable emotional responses. The study concludes that while code-switching may not directly shape students' learning behaviours or cognitive comprehension, its acceptance and emotional appeal are significant enough to foster an overall positive attitude, emphasizing the importance of emotional connection in English learning settings. Keywords: Student attitude, English lecturers, code switching.

In this research, the researcher applied explanatory mixed method research design with a closed-ended questionnaire and an open-ended questionnaire as the instruments. The population of this research were 108 respondents from the third semester students taking Post Intermediate Reading and Writing subjects. There were two classes, consisting of 75 students, chosen as the sample in this research through cluster random sampling technique. The research findings that the third semester students’ writing self-efficacy in the English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau is moderate, which suggests that the students’ self-belief and their judgement on their writing skills is not quite good. There are nine reasons for both of their inefficacy and their efficacy and followed by ten challenges faced by the students in writing courses. Lecturers can help students to enhance their writing self-efficacy by applying the innovative teaching strategies and students should learn more on linguistics and writing self-efficacy, practising more, reading more books, and also conducting a study group together with their friends.

Abstract

This study investigates cyberloafing among EFL learners in English Department in university at Pekanbaru, focusing on how students use digital devices for non-academic purposes during class. The aims of this study are to assess the level of cyberloafing and identify the reasons why do EFL learners engage in cyberloafing. The subject of this study was selected through cluster random sampling and convenience sampling. The total number of the sample was 71 students for the quantitative study and 10 students for the qualitative study. The study adapted explanatory sequential mixed-method design. The data were collected through 35 items questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The researcher employed descriptive analysis in terms of means for the quantitative data using SPSS 29 and thematic analysis for the qualitative data. The results revealed a high level of cyberloafing, with the most common activities being sharing followed by real time updating and accessing online content. It also showed contributing factors to cyberloafing including lecturer-related reasons, such as monotonous teaching methods, course-related reasons like unengaging peer-presentations, and student-related reasons including boredom and short attention spans. The study concluded that reducing cyberloafing may be achieved by improving teaching strategies, incorporating engaging digital tools and managing structured peer-presentations. It is suggested that lecturers establish a clear digital device policy during class, students promote self-regulation learning, and further research may explore long-term consequences of cyberloafing to mitigate cyberloafing behavior in educational settings.

Abstract

This study investigated backchannels, short verbal responses such as yeah, employed by Indonesian L2 speakers of English in the interactions with L1 speakers of Australian English in Australian academic setting. The naturally occurring dyadic interactions were audiotaped and scrutinised in a sequential analysis of conversation analysis. The examination was aimed to scrutinise the pragmatic functions and the placement of backchannels within the sequential organisation of the interactions. The findings showed that they used backchannel responses involving non-lexical items, lexical items, and combinations of lexical and non-lexical items. Backchannel responses existed in different linguistic environments that may be culturally specific such as after you know. Backchannels were used to show attentiveness, agreement, and comprehension of the speaker’s talk. Besides, they also employed backchannels to express politeness to satisfy the supervisors’ positive face in the interactions. In this study, they appear to converge their linguistic devices to that of their supervisors.

Abstract

This research investigated the factors contributing to learners’ speaking performance and exploring the reasons why those factors are perceived by learners to contribute to their speaking performance. This was descriptive research that used both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The participants of this research were 28 EFL learners who were selected by using cluster random sampling. Closed-ended questionnaires, open ended questionnaires, and interviews were used to collect the data. The data from closed-ended questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively using the descriptive statistics of frequencies and percentages, while the data from open-ended questionnaires and interviews were analyzed qualitatively. Data from all sources were triangulated to validate the data. The result of the closed-ended questionnaire showed that the factors which contribute the most to learners’ speaking performance were the time for preparation and topical knowledge with the same percentages (97.4%). The least factor that contributes to learners’ speaking performance was the pressure to perform well (60.5%). Those factors contribute to learners' speaking performance in both positive and negative ways. These influences can either help motivate learners to speak English or even discourage them from doing so. It all depends on how learners’ value, respond to, and behave towards those factors. Furthermore, this research also gives contributions on factors that contribute to learners' speaking performance; those are vocabulary and interaction with native speakers.

Abstract

This research was aimed at analysing students' strategies in giving compliments. This was descriptive qualitative research using a qualitative approach accompanied by descriptive statistics. This research involved 39 EFL students as the participants in the academic year 2019/2020 selected using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was a DCT (Discourse Completion Test) containing several situations where the students were expected to give their compliments. The result showed that the students used many kinds of strategies in giving compliments. The explicit strategy was the most used by the students. Furthermore, the single explicit strategy appeared the most within overall strategies that appeared in the DCT. This implied that the students prefer to give a direct and simple compliment. One strategy in giving compliments appeared out of the classification which is congratulation attached to an unbound semantic formula.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aims at looking at the effect of Journal Writing technique on the ability in writing a paragraph. Specifically, the research answers the research questions about the students’ ability in writing, the effect of Journal Writing technique on the students’ ability in writing, and the students’ attitude toward Journal Writing technique applied in their Writing class. The sample are one class from the second semester of English Department students in 20172018 academic year. The data were collected through writing tests and the distribution of a set of questionnaires. From the results, nearly 60% of students’ ability in writing is at Average to Good level before the treatment. After the treatment, 56.76% of their ability is at Good to Excellent level. To test whether the increased score is statistically significant or not, the data were analyzed using t-test. Having t-obs (8.26) which is higher than t-table (2.030), there is a plausible reason to believe that the teaching of writing using Journal Writing technique significantly affects the students’ ability in writing paragraph. The data from questionnaire showed nearly 64% students have ‘high’ attitude toward Journal Writing technique applied in their class.
