Abstract

Studying CS in ESL classrooms is significant as it can enhance understanding and facilitate communication between teachers and students. This study aims to analyze the types, functions, and students’ perception of code-switching (hereafter, CS) used by an English teacher at a private school in Pekanbaru, Riau to seek whether it is important to use CS in learning process for ESL students. The subjects of this study were an English teacher of ESL classes and 72 ESL students in the academic year of 2023/2024. This research employs a mixed-method approach with a qualitative descriptive design combined with the use of a questionnaire, which is suitable for capturing both the depth and breadth of the phenomenon. To identify the types and functions of CS, the researcher recorded the teacher’s utterances and distributed the questionnaire to get the students’ perception. The data were analyzed using Poplack’s (1980) three types of CS and Cahyani et al.’s (2016) four functions of CS. The results showed that the teacher’s most frequently used type of CS is intra-sentential CS. Additionally, the teacher employed CS to ensure students understand the instructions given. The students showed a positive perception of the teacher’s CS since it helped them understand and comprehend the classroom activities. These results highlight the importance of strategic CS in enhancing student comprehension and participation in ESL classrooms, suggesting broader implications for teaching practices in multilingual settings.

Abstract

This paper investigates code-switching based on the types and functions in Daniel Mananta Network YouTube Channel while interacting with each other in informal situations. A qualitative approach was applied to the descriptive study in this paper. The data were gathered through a qualitative method by observing and transcribing the selected YouTube videos. The researcher transcribed, coded, analyzed, and classified the gathered data as the main instrument to determine the classifications and functions of code-switching. The study focused on the classifications and functions of code-switching used within Indonesian-based conversation. The sample of the study involved 10 video playlists of Daniel Tetangga Kamu on the Daniel Mananta Network YouTube Channel. The duration of the 10 videos is 12 hours and 53 minutes. The findings indicate that the Daniel Mananta Network YouTube Channel’s participants frequently used intra-sentential code-switching rather than inter-sentential code-switching, tag switching, and intra-word code-switching. In addition, the researcher also found a new phenomenon of code-switching that emerged where intra-sentential code-switching occurred within inter-sentential code-switching. The findings of the study are not only code-switching but also code-mixing, which is a reduplication that occurred due to the common usage in Indonesian speech. Subsequently, the most frequent function of code-switching used by the participants in the Daniel Mananta Network YouTube Channel is lexical need. Furthermore, the participants in Daniel Mananta Network YouTube Channel code-switch are not only from Indonesian to English but also from English to Indonesian in the Indonesian-based conversation.

Abstract

E-module as a learning tool is a new experience for English students. Based on the interviewing results of monitoring and information to students, it is found that the e-module has not been yet implemented or created other than in class 1 Semantic. Therefore, it is important to know how they perceive the implementation of an electronic module in the Semantic class in the English Study Program. The research in this paper aims to investigate English students’ perception of implementing the E-module in Semantic classes at the English Study Program. The research design is mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative). The data were gathered through a questionnaire and interview. Cluster random sampling was used to select the research sample, which involved 40 students. Ten students were interviewed for the qualitative data. The findings indicate that the students had a high perception of the implementation of e-module in the Semantic class. They also expect that e-module can be further developed and applied for other courses because most of them perceive e-module as a fun, complete, and total innovation in learning media that can facilitate their learning anytime and anywhere.

Abstract

Complaint commonly appears in daily life interaction (Sukyadi, 2011). People do not only provide words when they speak up but also deliver an action. The way how they complain is sometimes different. Hence, the study described in this article aimed to investigate the types of complaining strategies produced by the EFL learners of the English Study Program at Universitas Riau. The research was conducted in Pekanbaru. Research design used was a descriptive qualitative study accompanied by descriptive statistics. The participants of the research involved 36 EFL students of the English Study Program selected by using the cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by using a DCT( Discourse Completion Task) system consisting of some situations in which students were requested to express their complaints. The result showed that the students mostly used direct complaint strategies. Subsequently, based on the overall strategies, the direct accusation strategy appeared as the strategy mostly employed by students in their daily interactions. It means that they prefered to give a direct and simple complaint by using a question to accuse the complainant directly. Moreover, they complain about something by using an Indonesian structural context as their L1, which was not appropriate in the English structural context as their L2. One of the strategies that were not used by the students was the direct strategy to condemn or curse the defendant’s actions because it was claimed as a harsh accusation.

Abstract

The integration of digital tools and cultural content has been explored in every level of education, yet there are still few studies that have connected it to Riau local wisdom, particularly its tourism destination. This research aimed to develop an interactive learning media based on Riau tourism places for learning descriptive text. This research followed the ADDIE model by Branch (2009) for its developmental process, involving students’ need analysis, developing the prototype, and evaluation. There were two schools involved in this study as the participants. One private school served as the small evaluation group, and one public school served as the field test. The data were collected using a questionnaire, a reading comprehension test, and an interview. The data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative approach. This research found that the media was valid and practical due to the average score obtained from the experts’ validation and small evaluation group of 4.02 and 3.29, respectively. Furthermore, it also had a potential effect on students’ reading proficiency in the field test implementation. The experiment group obtained 55.59 for the pre-test, and after implementing the media in the classroom, the score improved to 74.00 for the post-test. The students gave positive feedback as well on the employment of the media in the classroom. This showed that digital media, as an innovative media, could be one of the strategies that should be employed in English reading classes for senior high school students to enhance students’ reading comprehension, contribute positive perception, and promote local tourist sites.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the metacognitive awareness listening strategies that students commonly employ in their listening comprehension. The study used explanatory mixed-method research design. The data were acquired using a questionnaire adapted from Vandergrift (2006) and through an interview. The respondents in this study were fifth-semester students of the English Study Program at Riau University The respondents who filled out the questionnaire was 75 students of the 108 existing students. The results showed that students' metacognitive awareness in listening strategies were very high. The strategies were classified into: problem solving (4.00), mental translation (3.78), planning/evaluation (3.77), directed attention (3.58), and person knowledge (3.51). This result showed that most English Department students use problem solving as their listening strategy. It also shows that students often used their understanding of the context rather than translating word-for-word in their heads; compared the impact of their listening efforts; maintained concentration and stay focused in listening. In line with the qualitative data also showed that there were positive responses that students applied in using metacognitive listening strategies for their learning process. In the interview, students also shared some of the things they do when they lose focus. Such as pause the audio, relax the body and refresh the mind, and focus only on the key words. It also shows that students use more words they understand to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words. In addition, students make more comparisons between their background knowledge and their listening context.
