Abstract

In measuring learners’ productivity in writing and speaking, there is a formulation known as syntactic and lexical complexity. This study investigates whether there is a difference in syntactic and lexical complexity between L1 and L2 writings or not. This study is quantitative research which employ Web-Based Lexical Complexity Analyser and Web-Based Syntactic Complexity Analyser in order to measure data. The current study results reveal that the p-value of three sub-components of lexical complexity is lower than 0.05 (LD=0.000, LS=0.036, and LV=0.000), which means a significant difference in lexical complexity between L1 and L2 writings. A similar result showed in syntactic complexity where four of five indices of comparing the syntactic complexity of two-language writings showed value <0.05. The p-value of comparing four indices of syntactic complexity such as MLS, DC/C, CP/C, and C/S is 0.006, 0.000, 0.038, and 0.002, respectively. However, the fifth indice, MLC (mean length of clause) shows a p-value >0.05, which means no significant difference between MLC of English writings and Indonesian writings. The study concluded that the students produce more lexical and syntactic complexity in their English writings than in their Indonesian writings.

Abstract

This study investigates the ideological and discursive tensions surrounding Indonesia’s new capital city (IKN) project in East Kalimantan. While the government frames IKN as a “smart forest city” symbolizing national progress and ecological harmony, local communities—particularly indigenous groups—report environmental degradation and cultural displacement. Using Ecological Discourse Analysis (EDA) and framing theory, the research compares official narratives from presidential speeches and planning documents with grassroots perspectives documented by NGOs. The findings reveal a discursive gap that raises concerns about greenwashing and symbolic power in state-led development. This study contributes to ecolinguistics by highlighting how language mediates environmental ideology and public perception in contested urban transformations.

Abstract

This research explores the use of euphemism in the film Legally Blonde, with a particular focus on Elle Woods as the main character. Euphemism is understood as a linguistic strategy used to avoid harsh, taboo, or impolite expressions, making communication more polite and socially acceptable. Through a qualitative descriptive approach, the research examines Elle’s utterances by applying Allan and Burridge’s (2006) euphemism framework and Palmer’s (1976) concept of meaning. The analysis identifies several types of euphemisms, including metaphor, circumlocution, understatement, omission, clipping, acronyms, borrowing, and hyperbole. The findings show that Elle uses euphemistic language not only to maintain politeness and navigate sensitive topics but also to challenge stereotypes and assert her identity in professional environments such as law school. Theoretically, this research contributes to sociolinguistic research by showing how euphemism functions as a form of language variation and politeness strategy. Practically, it provides useful insights for students, educators, and researchers in understanding euphemism in both literary works and real-life communication.

Abstract

This study discusses the symbolism in the film “Inception” by Christopher Nolan (2010) using Roland Barthes semiotic approach. Films are understood not only as visual entertainment, but also as cultural texts that contain social, ideological and philosophical messages. Through qualitative analysis, data is collected from movie scenes, dialogues and visual elements, and then interpreted based on three layers of meaning: denotation, connotation and myth. An analysis of the seven main scenes shows that “Inception” features several major themes: (1) trauma and uncertainty that continue to haunt humans, depicted through Cobb's characters and rotating totem symbols; (2) reality as fragile and reconstructable, seen from the folds of Paris and the rotating corridors of hotels; (3) Science and technology as a form of control over the unconscious, shown by Joseph; (4) the human subconscious as a battleground of ideas and resistance, visualized through snow; and (5) family and personal relationships as an important part of identity formation, for example through Fischer's conflict with his father. These findings confirm that “Inception” presents a grand narrative about human life, full of ambiguity, trauma and the search for meaning. Thus, the film can be read as a representation of the modern human condition, living between reality and illusion, technological control and inner freedom, as well as past demands and future expectations.

Abstract

This research investigates language difficulties brought on by schizophrenia as they are represented in the character John Nash from the 2001 movie A Beautiful Mind. Finding signs of a language disorder in the main character's speech patterns, such as paralogia, affective flatness, and disordered speech patterns, is the goal. Selected conversation and scenes from the movie are analyzed as data in this qualitative descriptive study. According to the analysis, schizophrenia severely hinders communication skills by causing problems with speech coherence and emotional expression. This study advances our knowledge of the relationship between language and psychological diseases and emphasizes the significance of truthful media portrayals in lowering stigma toward people with schizophrenia. Programs for mental health education and awareness could use the practical consequences as a guide.

Abstract

This study investigates turn-taking strategies employed by Donald Trump and Joe Biden in the 2024 U.S. presidential debate. Using Conversation Analysis (CA) as the methodological framework, the research examines how interruptions, overlaps, pauses, and topic shifts are managed to negotiate control, assert dominance, or maintain authority in a high-stakes political context. Data were drawn from the official debate recording and analyzed qualitatively. The findings reveal that both verbal and nonverbal cues function as strategic tools in shaping debate dynamics and influencing audience perceptions of leadership and credibility. By situating turn-taking within the field of political communication, this study contributes to understanding the structural mechanisms underlying political discourse and shows how conversational strategies reflect power relations and persuasion beyond rhetoric and content.

Abstract

This research focuses on the use of pauses and overlaps in the dialogue between characters in the film Love, Simon (2018). It uses Hutchby and Wooffitt’s theory of Conversation Analysis as the main framework. The goal is to explore how pauses and overlaps are used in the dialogue of Love, Simon (2018) film. The data consist of film dialogues containing pauses and overlaps, which were examined using qualitative method. The findings show that pauses often happen when characters feel emotionally vulnerable or try to be polite. Overlaps usually appear in emotional situations like conflict, interruption, or quick reactions. These features are not just technical parts of speech, they also show relationship dynamics and emotional depth. This research shows that small details in talk can carry deep meaning, especially in how people manage emotions, relationships, and identity through communication.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of language styles in the film Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) through the lens of Martin Joos’s theoretical framework, which classifies language into five distinct styles: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. Grounded in sociolinguistic theory, the research examines how language serves as a reflection of social identity, interpersonal relationships, and the communicative context in which it is used. The film was selected as the research object due to its rich portrayal of interactions that span multiple genres, including family, comedy, and supernatural adventure, making it particularly suitable for examining variations in communication. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data derived from the dialogues of the main characters. Data collection involved detailed observation, identification of key scenes, and systematic categorisation of dialogues according to Joos’s language style framework. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s model, encompassing the processes of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The primary objectives of this study are to describe the range of language styles utilised by the main characters and to identify which style is most dominant within the film’s interactions. The findings are anticipated to provide both theoretical contributions to sociolinguistic scholarship and practical benefits for audiences, enhancing their understanding, appreciation, and critical engagement with language use in cinematic narratives. Ultimately, this study offers insights into how stylistic choices in film dialogue shape social meaning, influence audience perception, and illuminate the dynamic interplay between language, context, and social identity in contemporary media.
