The result of this research shows that, the March Sisters; Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth used thirty six euphemisms including eight different types of euphemism out of fifteen; metaphor, underestimate, hyperbole, ellipsis, circumlocution, affixation, rhyming, and external borrowing. Meanwhile, for the functions, March Sisters used all six functions of euphemism; protective, underhand, uplifting, provocative, cohesive, and ludic. Jo is the most user of metaphor because she frequently used a non-literal sentences. Jo mostly used euphemism to protect the listener’s feeling as she is an empathetic person. Amy, as the spoilest one, she is the most underestimate user. She used it to avoid some existing fact, which is to protect herself from feeling embarrassed. Beth used metaphor and hyperbole, but for the function, she used it all as a protective euphemism to protect the listener’s feeling because all of her euphemism words are related to dead, she died in the film caused by scarlet fever. Meg is the least euphemism user. She only use hyperbole twice and circumlocution once but all of them used as a protection to her self-esteem because she is easy to be provoked. In conclusion, March Sisters used euphemism differently based on their personality.

Abstract

The Dyak Chief Poem describes the poet's experience of witnessing the intersection of personal desires, cultural expectations, and the larger moral consequences of one's actions. This poem also presents a description of the nature of the island of Borneo at that time, which was still full of tropical rainforest. In addition to the themes of love, honor, and culture, this poem incorporates an ecological theme as its primary setting. Therefore, this poem is suitable for analysis using ecological discourse analysis to see whether this poem is eco-beneficial, eco-destructive, or eco-ambivalent. This research aims to determine the ecological ideology contained in this poem through metaphor, evaluation, and salience, using an ecological discourse analysis approach, which is a qualitative research method. The research results reveal that the depiction of nature as human illustrates the power of nature towards humans. In addition, upon examining the appraisal patterns, it becomes clear that only a few, such as appreciation and graduation, are directly related to nature. On the other hand, affect and judgment, on the other hand, pertain to the protagonist's own feelings and are not associated with either nature or the environment. The use of concreteness, transitivity patterns, and hyponyms reveal the salience of the poem. The researchers conclude, based on metaphor, appraisal, and salience patterns, that this poem is an eco-beneficial discourse that depicts nature as an integral part of human life, with which humans should coexist harmoniously.

Abstract

Lexical diversity is one of the language tools to measure varied words or vocabulary produced by learners in a text both spoken and written. This research aims to investigate the lexical diversity of children narratives produced by children orally. The research design of this research was a case study supported by quantitative data. Meanwhile, the subjects of this research are seven children around 6-9 years old. In collecting data, the researchers employed narrative storytelling based on a picture which is drawn by the subjects. In analyzing data, TTR (Type-Token -Ratio) was used to measure the lexical diversity gained from the subject while the theory was used to explain the phenomena. Based on the findings, it is found that (1) older children have higher lexical diversity than the younger ones, (2) younger children produced higher lexical frequency (word tokens) than the older ones (3) individual variations caused an anomaly of the result in which older children were expected to have higher lexical frequency but the result showed the reverse. Keywords: Lexical Diversity, Children, Oral Narratives, Case Study.

Abstract

Humans should be able to convey their thoughts and feelings to one another with minimal problems. However, when an individual’s brain is affected by a condition such as schizophrenia, effective communication can become challenging due to disrupted cognition, leading to what could be considered a language disorder. This concept was portrayed through the character John R. Isidore, a main character in Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The researcher was intrigued to study how Isidore exhibited behaviours associated with schizophrenia and to identify the language disorders he experienced within the context of post-apocalyptic San Francisco. To explore this, the researcher first examined Isidore’s thoughts and actions as described by the author, employing the psychopathology of schizophrenia framework established by Lindenmayer & Khan (2012). The researcher then analyzed the language disorders present in Isidore's character using the thought and language index (TLI) instrument. The analysis revealed that Isidore displayed a comprehensive range of symptoms across the schizophrenia spectrum, with a notable prominence of positive symptoms. Moreover, Isidore manifested all eight language disorders associated with schizophrenia, with the most pronounced of these disorders was the perseveration of ideas. Abstract

The emergence of conflicts in various countries has been arising in the past few years. A country’s leader is one of the important factors in determining the continuance of conflicts. Their language influences both their own people and the parties who are not directly involved in the conflict. Isaac Herzog’s ceremonial address at the U.S. Congress in 2023 can be used to analyse the rhetorical strategies in influencing the U.S. committee in the conflict with Palestine. Using Norman Fairclough’s three dimensions Critical Discourse Analysis model, the goal of this study is to reveal how the speaker exercises power in speech and influences their audience, by analysing the text from its textual, discursive, and social dimensions. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach. The result of this study found the rhetorical strategy in shaping and influencing audiences, such as topic control through strategic lexical choices that frame actors ideologically, Intertextuality references that aligns with audience values to increase persuasion, and utilize sociocultural context to justify ideologies and actions. This analysis emphasized the importance of language in maintaining power, and rhetorical strategies in political discourse as tools for ideologies transfer and preservation.
