Abstract

This research aims to prepare the production of multicultural cultural houses to increase UNY's income generation from a creative economy perspective. This effort is expected to support UNY's vision and mission as a world-class university while simultaneously increasing UNY's income generation in the era of PTNBH (State-Owned Legal Entities). The production of multicultural cultural houses is realized through collaboration between study programs within the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FBSB) UNY, utilizing the potential of local language, art, literature, and culture that are marketable as creative economy commodities. This study utilizes the theory of exploratory and collaborative cultural house production development, related to the empowerment of local language, art, literature, and culture. The research method used is qualitative, encompassing heuristic, exploratory, and negotiative approaches, which serve as analytical tools to develop Javanese cultural entrepreneurship packages as a competitive advantage. The results indicate that the production of multicultural cultural houses can be achieved through two steps. First, the development of a pranatacara package that utilizes panyandra practices, which are related to the ethnomathematic concept of spiritual hydrology, is realized through the empowerment of macapat songs in the siraman manten tradition. Second, the empowerment of collaborative elements of language, art, literature, and culture from an ethnobotanical perspective in the Panggih Manten tradition, where panyandra is embodied in the form of parikan (pantun) and macapat songs combined with gending (traditional music). Abstract

The continuous shifts in Indonesia’s educational curriculum have raised significant concerns about the effectiveness of English language teaching at the elementary school (ES) level, particularly in rural areas. While the Merdeka Curriculum (MC) emphasizes early language acquisition, its implementation faces challenges due to gaps in teacher preparedness, limited resources, and disparities between urban and rural schools. This study explores English teachers’ perceptions of the MC and the challenges they encounter in its implementation in rural elementary schools. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis from eight English teachers in five ES in Baubau, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data analysis involved data condensation, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that while teachers recognize the potential of the MC, their understanding remains superficial, primarily acknowledging it as a new policy. The challenges identified include a lack of professional development opportunities, inadequate resources, and insufficient facilities, hindering the curriculum’s effective application. Teachers often rely on internet-based resources that are not tailored to local contexts and struggle with the student-centered, differentiated learning approach promoted by the curriculum. The study suggests that successful implementation of the MC requires support at both the central and local levels, including teacher training, infrastructure improvements, and appropriate resources. Further research should explore strategies to enhance teacher competencies and address infrastructural barriers, ensuring the full potential of the MC in rural education settings.

The Prabangkara Manuscript or Serat Prabangkara by Ki Padmasusastra is one of the notable Javanese literary works that captures the social and cultural transformations during Indonesia’s colonial transition. Serat Prabangkara is one of the Javanese literatures works steeped in local representations of tradition. This paper explores how text portrays royal court life, marriage arrangement, and the use of occult practices, as well as reconstructing traditions of harmony trough thematized of love, social hierarchy, gender relations, and nature symbolism. A literary anthropological approach is utilized to examine the text within the Javanese cultural context. Within the framework of literary anthropology, the study of Serat Prabangkara serves as a medium to comprehend how Javanese tradition is reconstructed and preserved through literary narrative. This theory frames literary works as a cultural representation, which enables in-depth analysis of the traditional aspects embodied in it. The study result revealed that Serat Prabangkara serves as a medium for tradition preservation as well as cultural value adaptation in a modern context. The symbolism in text reflects universal values of balance, love, and harmony that remain relevant across different periods.

Abstract

The buka giling ritual (sugarcane milling season opening) at Lestari Sugar Factory, Patianrowo, is more than a ceremonial marker for the production season; it represents a complex industrial rite embedded with symbolic, historical, and social significance. Amid the pressures of national sugar industry modernization, this tradition persists as both an adaptive mechanism and an integrative force between local communities and industrial institutions. This study examines how the buka giling ritual operates as a social system through symbolic and structural analysis. A qualitative research design employing an interpretive ethnographic approach was adopted. Data were gathered via participant observation, semi-structured indepth interviews with community leaders, workers, management, and sugarcane farmers, as well as documentation of ritual proceedings. Analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014) interactive model, validated through source triangulation. The theoretical framework draws on Talcott Parsons’ (1951) AGIL social systems theory and Clifford Geertz’s (1973) interpretive cultural theory. The findings reveal that the buka giling ritual fulfills four primary social functions: (1) adaptation to industrial transformation, (2) goal attainment through collective production and solidarity, (3) social integration among diverse actors, and (4) latency through preservation of local cultural values and identity. Ritual elements such as the manten tebu procession and cethik geni ceremony symbolize the unification of nature, community, and industrial technology. This study contributes to the fields of industrial anthropology and cultural labor studies, recommending institutional support for preserving local rites as a form of productive and sustainable social integration.
