Abstract

Many studies were conducted to maintain the environment by reducing the waste, especially pineapple peel waste. This study aims to explore the effect of various pressure of the homogenization process on bacterial cellulose membrane surface morphology and structure produced using extract of pineapple peel waste. The methods include the preparation of pellicle samples from the product of the fermentation process of Acetobacter xylinum using a medium from the extract of pineapple peel waste. Bacterial cellulose pellicles were crushed using a blender. Mashed bacterial cellulose pellicle then homogenized in High-Pressure Homogenizer with pressure variation of  0 bar, 150 bar, 300 bar, 450 bar, dan 600 bar then cast into a mold. The bacterial cellulose solutions were dried in an oven at 60°C for 8 hours. The dried bacterial cellulose membrane was analyzed using XRD for the structure and SEM analysis for the morphology. The results indicate that the crystalline properties of BCM were shifted after being treated by various pressure processing in a High-Pressure Homogenizer. It was found that the High-Pressure Homogenizer with higher pressure reduced the peak intensity, decreased crystalline index from 87% to 70%, and decreased the degree of crystalline from 88% to 77%  without changing the cellulose structure. The higher pressure of the homogenization process causes the porosity of the membrane to be decreased.

Abstract

Water quality is an important factor in aquaculture activities, including goldfish (Carassius auratus) farming. One approach to improving water quality is the use of nanofilters. This study aims to evaluate the performance of nanofilters made from Sargassum sp. with the addition of copper oxide nanoparticles. The method used involves the fermentation of bacterial cellulose from Acetobacter xylinum using Sargassum sp. extract as a medium, followed by homogenization and the addition of CuO-NPs at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%, and subsequent oven drying. The nanofilter membrane will then be analyzed using SEM, XRD, and FTIR to characterize its properties. Performance tests will assess the quality of water used in goldfish farming, including pH, TOM, TDS, and TSS after treatment with the nanofilter. Morphological results show a rougher and denser surface with dispersed CuO-NPs. Characterization reveals cellulose I with crystallinity values ranging from 86.80% to 90.20%, with functional group peaks at 3145, 2927, and 1735 cm⁻¹ indicating cellulose characteristics, and a peak at 424 cm⁻¹ indicating Cu-O bonds. Statistical analysis of performance tests on the water quality of goldfish farming in the F-test shows significant differences (p

Abstract

Utilization of pineapple biowaste is important to increase the value added to biowaste and solve the environmental problem. So, the study objective is to synthesize membranes of bacterial cellulose made from pineapple biowaste and characterize the surface morphology and porosity of the membrane after being added with ZnO nanopowder. The study starts with extracting biowaste as a bacterial cellulose culture medium for the fermentation process. The obtained pellicle was crushed and homogenized with the added ZnO nanopowder in the presence of ultrasonic waves. The membrane is dried in the oven. The membrane morphology was monitored using scanning electron microscope and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis. Results indicate that surface morphology more rougher in line with increasing ZnO nanopowder content. The control membrane exhibits the highest surface area (36.9605 m²/g) due to its uninterrupted porous network. The addition of ZnO nanopowder at 2.5% significantly reduces the surface area to 2.9168 m²/g, likely due to nanoparticle-induced pore obstruction. As the ZnO nanopowder concentration increases to 5% and 7.5%, the specific surface area rises to 8.0436 m²/g and 13.7783 m²/g, respectively. This trend suggests that higher ZnO nanopowder loading enhances porosity and introduces additional adsorption sites. The control BC membrane exhibits the highest pore volume and well-defined mesoporosity, which are diminished upon the initial addition of ZnO nanopowder.
