Abstract

Background: Ecotourism that involves local communities emphasizes active participation from local residents. This concept is based on the understanding that local populations possess indigenous knowledge about the natural environment and cultural heritage, which can serve as a tourism attraction. Therefore, community involvement is a crucial aspect of ecotourism development. This study focuses on the ecotourism management of Wana Wisata Ranca Upas and how it integrates local communities. Methods: A qualitative paradigm was applied as the research framework, following a post-positivist philosophy to explore phenomena in a natural setting. Data collection was conducted through triangulation, with an inductive approach to analysis. The study prioritized a deep understanding of community involvement over generalization. Findings: The analysis showed that the management of Wana Wisata Ranca Upas is committed not only to commercial aspects but also to environmental sustainability, community education, and providing significant economic and social benefits to local communities. Community motivation for participating in ecotourism varied, with many viewing it as a source of substantial income. However, there is a gap in ecotourism-related knowledge between the management, which operates according to Perhutani’s vision and mission, and the local communities, who often do not fully understand ecotourism principles. Factors influencing these differences in perception include access to information, background, interests, decision-making processes, and trust. Conclusion: The study concludes that while Wana Wisata Ranca Upas emphasizes sustainability and ecotourism principles, there remains a knowledge gap between management and local communities. Bridging this gap is essential for the long-term success of ecotourism in the area.  Novelty/Originality of this study: This study highlights the disconnect between management's vision and the local community's understanding of ecotourism, emphasizing the need for improved communication and education to foster more effective and sustainable community participation in ecotourism development.

Abstract

Halal tourism is a rapid emerging concept in the tourism sector that offers substantial development opportunities, particularly in a country with Muslim majority such as Indonesia. This concept encompasses the provision of products and services aligning with sharia principles, including accommodation, transportation, culinary, and tourist activities. Despite the potential, the implementation of halal tourism in Indonesia, particularly in Bandung Regency faces several challenges such as limited understanding from peoples of halal tourism concept, insufficient socialization from the government, difficulties in halal certification standards among tourism business industries, and the complexity related to the policies. This study aims to analyze the understanding of the community and business industries in the development of halal tourism in Bandung Regency. By using a qualitative method with policy analysis approach, this research identifies challenges and opportunities in implementing halal tourism. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with business actors, local community, and stakeholders, as well as an analysisi of regulatory documents, including Regional Regulations of Bandung Regency on Halal Tourism. Additionally, a comparative analysis of halal tourism policies between Indonesia and Thailand, was conducted to identify the differences in conceptual and implementation. The findings indicate that the community predominantly associates halal tourism with prayer’s facilities and culinary offerings, while other aspects such as accommodation, activities, and services remain unexplored. Business actors encounter significant challenges in obtaining halal certification due to bureaucratic complexity and high costs. This study emphasizes the importance of an inclusive approach from the government to enhance public and business understanding, thereby fostering the sustainable development of halal tourism in Bandung Regency.

Abstract

Angklung, an intangible cultural heritage from West Java, plays an important role in building the cultural identity of the Indonesian nation. The preservation of traditional arts has been hindered by the challenges of globalization and the lack of interest of the younger generation, especially Generation Z, in traditional arts. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the challenges, opportunities, and effectiveness of angklung conservation policies, with a particular focus on the perspective of Generation Z in Bandung. Using a mix-method, this study involved 100 respondents through quantitative surveys, as well as in-depth interviews with members of the art community, such as Saung Angklung Udjo. Although 90,85% of respondents had a high awareness of angklung conservation, only 81.88% comprehended its supporting policies, such as the Bandung City Regional Regulation, according to the findings. Despite the introduction of the tagline 'AWI BITUNG', its effectiveness is still low (71.8%), which indicates the need for more innovative digital promotion. The use of digital technology by Generation Z has the potential to be a conservation agent, but only 84.2% feel the need to actively participate. Collaboration between the art community, the government, and Generation Z through. Technology-based branding and education strategies is the main opportunity for the preservation of angklung. The sustainability of angklung culture as a symbol of local and national pride is recommended by this study through an innovation-oriented cross-sector approach.

Abstract

This study explores how destination attributes, such as accessibility, natural attractions, facilities, and disaster knowledge, influence tourists' risk perceptions, ultimately shaping their travel preparedness. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 806 tourists visiting a tsunami-prone beach destination in Indonesia. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was implemented in the analysis. The findings indicate that accessibility and well-developed tourist facilities tend to lower tourists’ perceived risk, while disaster knowledge heightens it, leading to improved preparedness. Tourists generally feel safer when destinations offer accessible amenities and infrastructure, yet this sense of security may inadvertently decrease their readiness for disasters. This situation creates a paradox: While enhanced accessibility and high-quality amenities contribute to visitor satisfaction, they can unintentionally lower risk perception and preparedness levels. The study challenges the conventional view that accessibility and amenities are inherently beneficial, highlighting the importance of balancing these attributes with proactive risk management strategies. Destination providers, destination management organizations (DMOs), and governments should enhance tourists’ disaster awareness through well-crafted guidelines, educational campaigns, and community engagement programs; these efforts help equip tourists with the necessary knowledge to respond effectively in emergency situations. At the same time, they contribute to the development of safer and more enjoyable tourist destinations.

Abstract

One of the key factors for tourists in choosing a destination is its attractions, both natural and recreational facilities. The general concept suggests that natural attractions and recreational facilities positively influence the decision to visit. This study aims to analyze the impact of these two factors on tourists’ decisions at Situ Bagendit and compare the magnitude of their influence. The revitalization of Situ Bagendit has increased visitor numbers, but many tourists still feel dissatisfied. This research employs a quantitative method with SEM PLS analysis using the Smart PLS 3 application, involving 100 respondents who visited Situ Bagendit between 2018-2023, selected using the Slovin formula and online questionnaires. The results show that natural attractions influence visiting decisions by 68.2%, while recreational facilities account for 23.5%. Thus, natural attractions have a greater impact than recreational facilities on tourists’ decisions to visit Situ Bagendit.

Abstract

Background: Tourism in Bali has grown rapidly, driving economic growth but exacerbating overtourism, where visitor numbers exceed capacity. This leads to environmental damage, resource depletion, and socio-economic problems. Methods: This study uses a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, focusing on publications from 2020 to 2024 from both international and national journals, identifying dominant themes such as environmental, economic, and cultural challenges. Findings: The results reveal that overtourism in Bali significantly affects environmental, economic, and cultural aspects. Strategies such as equitable tourist distribution, infrastructure development in less-developed areas, and sustainable tourism policies are crucial to addressing these challenges. Policies such as tourist limitations (enforcing visiting hours) and restrictions on tourist business development can also help reduce overtourism in Bali. Conclusion: A case study of Nusa Dua highlights capacity management efforts, including event access limitations and stakeholder collaboration, which have been implemented effectively. Nusa Dua not only cooperates with the government and surrounding entrepreneurs, but also with the local community, especially when there are big events being organized. Novelty/Originality of this article: Additionally, this study provides a new perspective by examining how overtourism impacts local communities' connection to their traditions culture, while emphasizing the balance between economic growth, preserving nature and cultural preservation in sustainable tourism.
