Abstract

Genetic concepts are complex and often lead to student misconceptions due to difficult textbooks and ineffective teaching strategies. Widespread misunderstandings highlight the need for effective instructional techniques to enhance comprehension. This study examine the teaching techniques employed by Biology teachers in 20 high schools in Pontianak City to evaluate their implementation, strengths, and limitations in genetics instruction. This study used a qualitative survey approach to examine teaching techniques for genes, DNA, and chromosomes in 12th-grade classes across 20 high schools in Pontianak City. Data were collected through validated questionnaires and observation sheets, focusing on learning activities, instructional approaches, and challenges faced by teachers. Responses were summarized in tables, analyzed descriptively, and presented to highlight technique variations, selection criteria, and implementation. A total of 20 teaching techniques were identified, with most schools using a combination of 2 to 5 methods, while only three schools applied a single technique, and discussion was the most frequently integrated approach. Teaching techniques for Genes, DNA, and Chromosomes in Pontianak high schools vary, with most teachers combining multiple methods to enhance understanding, interaction, and engagement. The selection and combination of techniques are influenced by student needs, classroom conditions, and learning objectives, highlighting the importance of a balanced approach between student-centered, teacher-led, and objective-driven strategies.

Abstract

Many students face difficulties in writing scientific articles that meet the standards of accredited journals, particularly Sinta 2, both in terms of substance and technical writing. This community service activity aims to improve students' skills in writing scientific articles in accordance with academic rules and reputable publication standards. The method used was training through a combination of material presentations and coaching clinics. The activity was carried out at the Biology Education Study Programme, Tanjungpura University, Pontianak, involving 14 students as participants. In the initial stage, students were introduced to the basic principles of scientific article writing, manuscript structure, and citation formats in accordance with accredited journal styles. Next, coaching clinics were conducted through individual guidance, where each participant received direct feedback on their article drafts. The evaluation results showed a significant improvement in the quality of the articles produced. Participants who initially had difficulty in writing titles, abstracts, and bibliographies began to show better understanding and were able to adjust their writing to the applicable standards. A comparison between the initial draft and the revised version shows noticeable improvements in both language and structure. Thus, this training and coaching clinic proved to be effective in improving students' competence in scientific writing and preparing them for publication in accredited journals.

Abstract

Abstract: Ferns are a type of biodiversity that is spread to live on the forest floor and plays an important role in ecological functions, such as humus formation, protecting soil from erosion, and maintaining soil moisture. This study aims to determine the distribution of fern species at different heights in the Gunung Raya Protection Forest, Temajuk Village and their potential for the community. The method in this study, namely the cruising method to observe ferns on soil contours with an altitude of 25-125 meters above sea level, 125-225 meters above sea level, and 225-325 meters above sea level. Environmental parameters including temperature, humidity, light intensity, soil pH and wind speed were measured at each altitude.  Herbarium was made to identify ferns. Information about the potential of ferns was obtained from the surrounding community. The results showed that there were 14 species of ferns belonging to 7 families. Ferns found were as many as 14 species at an altitude of 25-225 masl decreased to 10 species at the highest contour (325 masl). The four species that were not found were Stenochlaena palustris, Nephrolepis cordifolia, Hypolepis punctata, and Davalia divaricata. Of the 14 species of ferns, 11 of them have potential as vegetables, medicines, ornamental plants, and craft materials.

Abstract

Comics are one instance of visual media that can be used as learning media. Comics engage students to be more interested, motivated, and entertained so that they can help teachers deliver learning materials. The comics developed in this study contain material about the biodiversity that exists in West Kalimantan, especially endemic flora and fauna, considering that West Kalimantan has various potential for diversity. This study aims to determine the feasibility of comics based on the local potential of West Kalimantan on biodiversity material as a learning medium for class X MAN 2 Pontianak and to determine student responses to the developed learning media. The form of this research is descriptive with a survey research method. The sample in this study was class X MIA 4 MAN 2 Pontianak which was selected through a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used were comic media validation sheets and student response questionnaires. Based on the results of the validation data analysis, the calculation of the CVR and CVI values against the 11 assessment indicators, it was found that the comic media developed was categorized as valid with the CVR and CVI values by 1. The results of student responses to the developed comic media, for 3 aspects including cognitive, affective, and conative is 76.18% with a high category. Cognitive responses of 77.6%, affective responses of 78.3%, and conative responses of 72.66% with a high category, respectively. Therefore, comic media based on local potential of flora and fauna endemic to West Kalimantan is feasible to be used as a learning medium in class X in MAN 2 Pontianak, and student responses to the developed media are categorized as strong responses.

Abstract

Literacy in the digital era has recently become an exciting topic in education policy, research, and practice because it is believed to be the foundation for dealing with life in the digital era. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of the literacy taxonomy guidebook in the digital era for high school biology teachers. The method used is the Research and Development (R&D) model ADDIE, which is limited to the Development stage. Data collection in this study used interview techniques and validation of literacy taxonomy guidebooks in the digital era for high school biology teachers by five validators using validation sheets and reliability tests using ICC. The validated aspects are material, presentation, language, and graphical aspects. This study found that the literacy taxonomy guidebook in the digital era for high school biology teachers received an Aiken validity value of 0.79 with a High Content Validity category, and the average reliability result using the ICC reliability formula was 0.947, with agreement between validators being on the Very Good criteria index. Thus, the literacy taxonomy guidebook in the digital era for high school biology teachers is suitable for teachers to implement literacy in the digital era in biology learning.
