Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research analyzes the implementation of the "bits and pieces" game on students' learning outcomes in writing English descriptive texts. A quasi-experimental design with Junior High School students as the population and a cluster random sampling technique used to draw the sample. Furthermore, two groups were administered pre- and post-test to collect the data. According to the data analysis, a noteworthy disparity existed in the post-test outcomes between the two groups. The experimental group had an average score of 86.60, whereas the control group had 62.43 score. By setting a significance level of 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) of 40 (21+21-2), the t-test demonstrated that the calculated t-value (6.487) surpassed the critical value (1.684), thereby indicating the acceptance of the research hypothesis. This implied that bits and pieces games have an effect on enhancing students’ learning outcomes. Therefore, the game can be a great contribution for English teachers in teaching English descriptive text, in terms of improving content, mechanics, organization, sentence structure, and grammar. How to Cite: Hairul, M.A., Nurhayati. Abstract

Feedback is necessary to measure whether students have understood well the lesson that has been delivered. Students should be given feedback to help them become autonomous learners who can regulate aspects of their thinking, motivation, and behaviour during learning. The study aimed to find out how feedback is implemented by the teacher based on Nicol’s framework and to find out students’ perceptions towards the application of formative assessment. A questionnaire was administered to get the data on how feedback that facilitates students’ self-regulation is implemented at MA Negeri 2 Kota Palu. Further, an in-depth interview was used to get students’ perception towards the implementation of feedback. The questionnaire showed that the implementation of feedback at MA Negeri 2 Kota Palu helps clarify what good performance is, facilitates the development of self-assessment in learning, delivers high quality information to students about their learning, encourages teacher and peer dialogue around learning, encourages positive motivational beliefs and self-esteem, and provides opportunities to close the gap between current and desired performance. The interview revealed that students have positive perception towards the feedback implemented by the teacher.

Abstract

This study investigates the process of acquiring English speaking skills, emphasizing the indispensable role of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation in facilitating effective communication between speakers and listeners. Acknowledging the critical need for learners to command these core components of the English language, this research specifically targets students residing in rural locales. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, the investigation centred on eighth-grade students from a Private Madrasah Tsanawiyah, chosen via convenience sampling. Data were garnered through observations, interviews, and questionnaires, revealing that issues related to practical application of skills were more pronounced than theoretical knowledge gaps. Notably, the findings indicate that a lack of confidence significantly impedes skill development, with 80% of challenges linked to this factor, compared to 72% associated with knowledge deficiencies in language production. In light of these insights, the research underscores the paramount problem of inadequate skill factors among students. Consequently, it advocates for English teachers to exhibit superior pedagogical competence, highlighting the necessity for educators to deploy effective teaching methodologies within the instructional framework.
