Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the most difficult and dominant inflectional form in students' writing as well as the variables that affect how difficult it is for students to comprehend the function of inflectional forms. This study examined inflectional markings in regular and irregular forms of content words. The design of this study was quantitative descriptive with a population taken from the 3rd-semester students of the English Education Study Program of Tadulako University who have enrolled Grammar subject. The sample of this study was 154 students of the 3rd-semester students by using a simple random sampling technique. The instruments to collect the data were a test and a questionnaire. The results of the data analysis show that: (1) the most difficult form of inflectional forms used by the students was suffix -est as superlative degree, (2) the most dominant form of inflectional forms used by the students was the suffix -ing as progressive marker, (3) there were two factors influencing the students’ difficulty in using the function of inflectional forms which were internal factors. The test results indicate that students lack sufficient knowledge of tenses, as they are unable to apply the present, past, or past participle tenses.

Abstract

This research aims to determine which student uses the most dominant conjunction, what students use the most difficult conjunction and why they have difficulty using correlative and coordinating conjunctions in their sentences. The population of this research was the 4th-semester students of the English education study program at Tadulako University. The sample was selected using a simple random sampling technique, and there were 151 4th-semester students. The researcher used a quantitative description. The data of this research used a test and questionnaire. The results of the data analysis show that (1) the most dominant conjunction used by the students was coordinating conjunction, especially conjunction “and” (2) the most difficult conjunction utilized by the students was correlative conjunction, namely conjunction “both…and”, the frequency of conjunction “both…and”, (3) there are two factors influencing the students in using coordinating and correlative conjunctions which are internal factor and external factor. The internal factors are: the students rarely improve their knowledge about conjunctions; The students are not interested in the material about conjunctions; The students do not understand the function of conjunctions; The students do not understand about lexical categories. The external factors are: There is no motivation from lecturers or teachers for students to learn the conjunctions; The lecturers or the teachers do not explain clearly the material of conjunctions.

Abstract

The researcher found that students' ideas in written language are not organized structurally and adequately because of the lack of understanding of sentence patterns. Their sentences are not varied, meaningful, and effective. When the students construct a sentence, they tend to construct simple sentences consisting of subject, verb, and object. It means that they do not understand the variety of sentence patterns. This research was conducted to discover the variety of sentence patterns made by students, the most dominant sentence pattern in students' written work, and why students struggle to make sentences based on sentence patterns. This research method depends on quantitative descriptive data and statistical analysis. The population and sample of this research are the 4th-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. The researcher found 1.127 sentences produced by the students in their written work with seven patterns. The most dominant sentence pattern in the students’ written work is pattern SVA (subject + verb + adverb). The researcher also found that four variables make the students find difficulties in writing sentences: the students have problems in constructing affirmative and negative sentences, constructing sentences based on the rules, constructing sentence patterns because they have different understandings about sentence patterns, and because they cannot differentiate formal and informal sentences.

Abstract

This research aims to prove whether or not the implementation of the Freewriting technique is effective in improving students’ writing skills of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Palu. This research used a quasi-experimental design. The Population of this research was class VIII students of SMP Negeri 9 Palu. The researcher used purposive sampling technique and chose two groups: VIII B and VIII D (experimental and control). The instrument used for collecting data was tests (pre-test and post-test). The results of the research show that there was a significance difference in the improve in students writing being taught through free writing technique. Data analysis shows that the t-counted value 10.380 is greater than the t-table value 1.683 by applying a significance level of 0.05 with degrees of freedom (df) = 45. It means that the t-counted is higher than the t-table. It can be interpreted that the hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, the implementation of Freewriting techniques in improving students' writing skills is accepted. The implication of this finding to the teaching practice is that teachers need to apply the freewriting in the learning strategies to make teaching better.

Abstract

This research objective aims to explore the effects of gamification in improving students' English writing skills. Many students face challenges in developing this skill due to limited vocabulary and difficulties with grammar. The study focused on 10th-grade high school students using a quasi-experimental design with a quantitative approach . Data were collected by using pre-test and post-test assessments of recount text writing. The quality of writing was evaluated using criteria such as content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics, based on Heaton's (1988) framework. Findings indicated that the experimental group, which utilized gamification, achieved a better mean score (28.22) compared to the control group (24.64). However, Mann-Whitney test results indicate there is no statistically significant difference between the groups (p = 0.393 > 0.05). This implies that while gamification shows potential in improving grammatical accuracy and vocabulary in writing, its impact remains statistically insignificant. The study suggests that for gamification to be more effective in writing instruction, it may require a longer implementation period, better calibration of task difficulty, and an enhanced feedback system targeting grammar and vocabulary development.

Abstract

The study employs a library research design by collecting and analyzing data from previously published sources. It aims to describe the steps in implementing the Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) strategy for teaching writing and to explain its effectiveness in improving students' writing skills. Primary data were obtained from Emily F. Calhoun's book (1999), while secondary data were gathered from six journal articles published between 2017 and 2021 on PWIM's implementation in teaching writing. The study identifies 10 steps in implementing the PWIM strategy: selecting and identifying pictures, creating a picture-word chart, reading and reviewing the chart aloud, reading and classifying words, spelling words, adding words, creating titles, generating sentences and paragraphs, and reviewing sentences and paragraphs. However, variations in these steps were observed in the reviewed studies, with adaptations made to accommodate students’ age, knowledge, and learning environment. All studies reported an improvement in students' ability to write descriptive texts when using PWIM. Its effectiveness is attributed to the use of engaging pictures that stimulate inductive thinking and motivate students to actively participate in the learning process. The study has several implications. Teachers should be creative in selecting pictures as learning media to optimize PWIM's impact. For schools, PWIM can support effective teaching and learning activities. At the student level, the strategy is applicable across educational levels for teaching writing skills. Regarding writing itself, PWIM provides visual stimuli that enhance students’ achievement. In conclusion, the study highlights the significance of PWIM as an effective strategy in teaching writing, offering insights into its potential for improving students' writing skills

Abstract

This study aims to find out the effect of the using Spotify application, using English songs and podcasts, affects students' pronunciation at SMP Negeri Model Terpadu Madani Palu. The research used a quasi-experimental design with two groups: an experimental class that used Spotify and a control class that used traditional methods. The sample consisted of two eighth-grade classes chosen using purposive sampling. Data was collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure students' pronunciation before and after the treatment. The results showed that the average score of the experimental class improved significantly from 14.58 to 24.77, while the control class increased from 20.83 to 38.89. The Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test confirmed that the experimental class had a significant improvement (Z = -3.963, p = 0.000). However, the Mann-Whitney test showed no significant difference between the experimental and control classes (p = 0.677). This means that while Spotify helped improve students’ pronunciation, it was not proven to be more effective than traditional teaching methods. In conclusion, using the Spotify application can help students improve their pronunciation, especially for the consonant sounds /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /θ/, and /ð/. Even though the improvement was not greater than the conventional method, Spotify still made learning more interesting and interactive for students.
