Abstract

This article aims to analyze the influence of the Internet on the involvement of former terrorist prisoners, as well as formulate a Socio-Religious-based Digital Media Literacy model that can support the process of disengagement from radicalism. To help this research provide a comprehensive picture, this study interviewed one female former terrorist inmate and her companion after being released from prison, as well as a representative from Ruangobrol.id. This organization cares for former terrorist inmates to become "credible voices" in educating the public about terrorism. This research uses disengagement theory and critical digital literacy to analyze data generated from interviews with sources and other supporting sources. The study found that there is a duality of the Internet's function towards radicalism; the Internet is a tool that can introduce the poison of radicalism to someone, but at the same time, the Internet can also function as an antidote to the poison, helping people who are exposed to it to escape radicalism. In conclusion, this study proposes the formulation of a "socio-religious-based critical digital media literacy" that combines technical and socio-religious skills to maximize the antidote function of the Internet.

Abstract

Abstract

[Unequal and unbalanced roles of women and men have become the subject of intense debate in Muslim society. Common cultural and religious perceptions have long been that men’s roles should dominate over women’s roles and that women’s subordination is an unalterable fate. This study examines conceptualization by Indonesian Muslim teachers regarding Islamic texts, primarily of the hadith (the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad), that describe and prescribe aspects of gender roles. This qualitative study was designed to explore perceptions of five male and five female teachers, employed in Islamic Secondary Schools in Yogyakarta, as related to their understanding of women’s status in Islamic society. The data were gathered through mixed-gender focus group discussions conducted online via Zoom. Findings show that the subjects clearly acknowledge that individual and institutional attitudes persist for circumscribing women’s participation within Muslim society, and that most Muslims derive these attitudes from Islamic texts (mainly the hadith) that have been translated in historical and/or literal ways. The teachers varied in their views about three Islamic concepts which were analyzed as influential for the societal and occupational status of women, namely kodrat (human nature), qiwama (societal standing and leadership), and laknat (judgment by, or wrath of, the angels). Basically, not all of the teachers in this study had occasion to teach the subject of Islamic Jurisprudence (fiqh), in which the marriage topic is specifically covered, yet they were all aware of an ongoing need in classroom and society. This study has practical implications of the pedagogical approaches in Islamic schools for education on gender equality.]

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore Fred M. Donner’s views on the distinction between the Qur'an and Hadith among orientalists. This study describes Donner's views on orientalist thought, especially John Wansbrough who stated that the Qur'an and Hadith originate from the same time. This paper uses a qualitative study in the type of library research with a descriptive qualitative analysis method to analyze and elaborate on the views of Fred M. Donner. The results of this study show that, in contrast to the hadiths which enthusiastically discuss political topics, the Al-Qur'an rarely provides answers about the political leadership of its followers. Second, unlike the hadiths, which are full of anachronistic allusions and explanations of earlier prophets, the Qur'an does not include any reference to events that occurred after previous prophets. Third, the textual vocabulary and preferences of the Qur'an and hadith when discussing religious practices vary. The contrast set forth above thus refutes claims made by non-Muslim academics that the hadith were created at the same time as the Qur'an or were written before it. Because the hadith was made after the date of birth of the Qur'an, in a certain setting.

The findings highlight the critical role of character education in shaping the morals and ethics of students, particularly their religious character. The presence of these Islamic boarding schools plays a significant role in reinforcing character values among students. The study identifies four key aspects of character education within these institutions: a clear and measurable vision, mission, and goals; an effective character education learning design; strict yet rational regulations for student conduct; and the practical application of character education values in daily student life. The research concludes that higher education institutions should integrate character education into both general and religious curricula, with Islamic boarding schools providing an ideal environment for this integration through a well-structured character education curriculum.

Abstract

This study examines the manifestation of righteousness in public spaces among Salafi Muslim female students participating in Islamic study groups at four major universities in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through six months of participant observation and in-depth interviews with eight key informants. The research explores how Salafi Muslim women internalize, negotiate, and practice hadith teachings daily, particularly in public settings. The findings reveal that these study groups significantly shape individual and collective expressions of piety. Participants exhibit varied approaches to negotiating religious teachings, with some finding clarity and structure, while others experience ambiguities, creating space for personal interpretation. This variation underscores the complex relationship between religious texts and individual agency, aligning with theoretical perspectives on spiritual practice. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of these groups in reinforcing social identities and facilitating engagement in public spaces. The research contributes to broader discussions on religious agency and public piety, providing insights into how Salafi Muslim women navigate the intersection of spiritual devotion and modern public life. Limitations include the focus on a specific group and reliance on self-reported data. Future studies should explore how piety is expressed across social and cultural contexts to deepen understanding of its role in public participation.
