Abstract

Abstrak   Candida albicans merupakan salah satu mikrooganisme penyebab infeksi kandidiasis. Daun sirih merah (Piper crocatum) dan biji alpukat (Persea americana) telah diteliti dapat menghambat pertumbuhan Candida albicans. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui efektivitas kombinasi daun sirih merah (Piper crocatum) dan ekstrak biji alpukat (Persea americana) dalam menghambat pertumbuhan Candida albicans. Penelitian bersifat eksperimental laboratorium (true experiment) dengan pendekatan post test control group design only. Daun sirih merah dan biji alpukat diekstraksi secara maserasi menggunakan pelarut etanol.    Pada masing-masing ekstrak etanol dilakukan uji pendahuluan untuk mengetahui konsentrasi optimum ektrak dalam memnghambat pertumbuhan C. albicans. Daya Hambat pertumbuhan C. albicans diuji menggunakan metode difusi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstraks daun sirih merah dan biji alpukat masing-masing memiliki daya hambat terbesar pada konsentrasi 10%. Kombinasi ekstrak daun sirih merah dan ekstrak biji alpukat memiliki daya hambat yang signifikan terhadap pertumbuhan Candida albicans dibandingakan kontrol negatif, kontrol positif dan ekstrak daun sirih merah. Dengan demikian kombinasi ekstrak daun sirih dan biji aplukat etanol berpotensi sebagai antifungi dalam menghambat pertumbuhan C. albicans sehingga diharapkan bisa mengurangi prevalensi kandidiasis. Kata Kunci :    daun sirih merah,  biji alpukat, Candida albicans,                                                           Abstract Candida albicans is one of the microbialism that causes candidiasis infection. Red betel leaf (Piper crocatum) and avocado seed (Persea americana) have been studied to inhibit the growth of C. albicans. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of red betel leaf (Piper crocatum) and avocado seed extract (Persea americana) combination in inhibiting the growth of C. albicans. Research is experimental laboratory (true experiment) with post test approach control group design only. Red betel leaf and avocado seeds are extracted by maceration using ethanol solvent. In each ethanol extract, a preliminary test was performed to find out the optimum concentration of extract in inhibiting the growth of C. albicans. C. albicans growth retardant was tested using diffusion method. The results showed that the extract of red betel leaf and avocado seeds each had the greatest inhibitory concentration at 10%. The combination of red betel leaf extract and avocado seed extract have significant inhibitory effect on C. albicans growth compared to negative control, positive control and red betel leaf extract. Thus, the combination of betel leaf extract and ethanol  seed has the potential as an antifungal in inhibiting the growth of C. albicans so it is expected to reduce the prevalence of candidiasis. Keywords: red betel leaf, avocado seed, Candida albicans,

Abstract

Botanical insecticides are considered biodegradable, environmentally compatible, and less toxic to non-target organisms than synthetic insecticides. Unfortunately, they are not attractive to Indonesian farmers due to its instability against light, temperature, and microbes, as well as they, have short storage time. This research was intended to produce a distinctive botanical insecticide that is resilient against the light, microbes, and durable. The role of curcumin in the stability and efficacy of neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves extract as a botanical insecticide against soybean pod sucking bug, Riptortus linearis was evaluated in the laboratory. This research was conducted at the Organic Chemistry Laboratory of Chemistry Department, Faculty of Science and Technology Airlangga University and the Plant Protection Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture University of Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya, Indonesia, from March to October 2016. The results explained that curcumin is no effect on increase the stability of neem leaves extract solution towards UV light irradiation. However, it can increase the insecticide activity of neem leaves extract solution up to 96% mortality against soybean pod sucking bug, R. linearis. The increase of the bioactivity refers to the anti insecticidal activity of ferulic acid formed from the degradation of curcumin.

Abstract

Nosocomial infections of the urinary tract are the most common nosocomial infections. Infectious diseases currently pose a life threatening due to the increasing phenomenon of infectious agent resistance. One of the factors known to cause resistance to broad-spectrum antimicrobials agent is the susceptibility to biofilm formation. The use of silver nanoparticles (NPs) is now regarded as one of the most promising strategies to target infections associated with biofilms. This study aims to determine the application of nanotechnology in the form of metal nanoparticles in targeting the formation of biofilms on infectious agents. The antibacterial and antibiofilm activity test was performed on a 96-well microtiter plate on uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) at concentrations of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 ppm. The results showed the addition of silver and gold nanoparticles at different concentrations affected and inhibited the growth of UPEC and prevented the formation of biofilms, as indicated by a decrease in the OD value. In conclusion, silver and gold nanoparticles have antibacterial and antibiofilm effects on UPEC.

Abstract

Soybeans are one of the most significant crops in the world due to their nutritionally valuable. It has been converted to produce a variety of fermented soybean products. During conventional soybean fermentation, microorganisms are involved, biochemical reactions occur, and bioactive components are produced. With the rise of people's living standards, customers are paying more attention not only to the flavor and nutrition of fermented soybean meals, but also to their safety and quality. Mycotoxins, biogenic amine production, and high salt content are among the public health concerns associated with fermented soybean foods. This paper reviews the prevalent concerns about the safety and quality of fermented soybean foods, as well as potential improvements. Attempts and methods have been proposed to ensure the safety of the fermentation process and food quality. Official regulations, the employment of suitable microbes, the use of high-quality cultivars, and the administration of chemicals are all viable options for improving safety and quality. We conclude that implementing international food standards, guidelines, and codes of practice such as the Codex Alimentarius for fermented soybean products and the application of scientific novel methods (e.g., starter combination, high-pressure processing, or low-dose gamma irradiation, additive usage, low salt fermentation technique) are the potential solutions to mitigate the issues and improve the safety and quality of the products.

Abstract

Candida albicans merupakan anggota mikrobiota normal pada tubuh manusia yang sehat dengan sistem kekebalan tubuh yang baik. Namun, adanya gangguan keseimbangan akibat beberapa faktor dapat mengakibatkan C. albicans berkembang biak dengan cepat dan menyebabkan infeksi. Kemampuan C. albicans dalam menginfeksi salah satunya didukung oleh faktor virulensi, yaitu aktivitasnya dalam pembentukan biofilm. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik biofilm C. albicans dan potensi zerumbone, madu jujube, dan enzim β-1,3-glukanase sebagai antibiofilm C. albicans. Hasil studi literatur berdasarkan telaah jurnal didapatkan karakteristik biofilm C. albicans memiliki perbedaan dengan organisme planktonik, hal ini seringkali dikaitkan dengan keunggulan biofilm dengan sifat resistensi dan virulensinya. Selain itu, karakteristik antar biofilm C. albicans juga dapat berbeda sesuai dengan faktor yang mempengaruhinya, perbedaan ini berhubungan dengan proses adhesi, perubahan produksi biofilm, aktivitas metabolisme, serta kekuatan perlekatan biofilm pada permukaan. Zerumbone secara signifikan diketahui menurunkan tingkat ekspresi gen terkait biofilm dan spesifik terhadap hifa, madu jujube dapat menyebabkan perubahan pada dinding sel dan eksopolisakarida, dan enzim β-1,3-glukanase memiliki kemampuan untuk mendegradasi komponen polimer matriks ekstrasel pada biofilm. Ketiga bahan antibiofilm ini diketahui dapat mencegah pembentukan biofilm dan mendegradasi biofilm C. albicans yang telah terbentuk. DOI : 10.35990/mk.v5n2.p208-219

Abstract

Angka mortalitas Penyakit Tidak Menular (PTM), terutama Penyakit Jantung Koroner (PJK) dan Diabetes Melitus (DM), masih cukup tinggi di negara-negara berkembang. Etiologinya bersifat multifaktorial, ada yang tidak dapat dihindari namun juga ada yang dapat dihindari, oleh karena itu sejatinya dapat dilakukan langkah prevensi terhadap kejadian PTM. Kesadaran hidup sehat, seperti mengubah pola makan, aktivitas fisik dan menghentikan kebiasaan merokok, diharapkan dapat dibangkitkan melalui hasil pemeriksaan laboratorium yang nyata. Hal tersebut mendorong pengabdi untuk melakukan penyuluhan dan pelayanan kesehatan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan kesadaran masyarakat tentang pemeriksaan kadar glukosa darah dan kolesterol untuk menghindari PJK dan DM. Kegiatan dilakukan selama 2 hari dimana hari pertama dilakukan penyuluhan untuk memberikan edukasi dan hari kedua dilakukan pelayanan berupa pemeriksaan kesehatan dan laboratorium kepada kurang lebih 70 orang peserta dari kalangan guru dan karyawan di SMA Tamiriyah Surabaya. Hasil yang didapatkan berupa rata-rata nilai pre dan post test yang diberikan sebelum dan sesudah penyuluhan. Uji statistik Paired Sample T Test diperoleh harga sig (2-tailed) = 0,000, yaitu < 0,05 berarti ada perbedaan antara sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan. Kegiatan ini menyimpulkan bahwa penyuluhan yang diberikan dapat meningkatkan pemahaman dan kesadaran peserta tentang pentingnya pencegahan PJK dan DM.

Abstract

Aloe vera dikatakan sebagai tanaman antimikroba karena mempunyai kandungan senyawa aktif antrakuinon yang berpotensi  sebagai antibakteri dan antifungi.  Banyak penelitian tentang potensi Aloe vera sebagai antifungi. Literatur review ini bertujuan untuk melengkapi informasi lebih lanjut mengenai potensi Aloe vera sebagai antimikroba dalam menghambat pertumbuhan beberapa fungi. Desain Penelitian ini adalah  Literatur Review yang menggunakan penelitian sebelumnya sebagai acuan penarikan kesimpulan hasil penelitian sekarang. Sumber data berupa jurnal artikel yang diperoleh dari pencarian Science direct dan Google scholar berdasarkan topik yang telah ditentukan. Jurnal artikel yang digunakan diseleksi dari penelusuran ilmiah dengan rentang tahun 2010-2020 jurnal nasional dan internasional. Hasil dari analisis data menunjukkan bahwa kandungan kompleks Antraquinon dan Saponin, dapat berfungsi sebagai daya hambat pertumbuhan fungi. Maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa ekstrak maupun gel Aloe vera memiliki aktivitas antifungi yang cukup signifikan, namun  bentuk gel Aloe vera lebih besar potensinya. Mekanisme dalam menghambat pertumbuhan fungi yaitu dengan cara menurunkan tegangan dari permukaan dinding sel dan merusak permeabilitas membran sehingga terjadi kebocoran protein dari dalam sel.

Abstract

At the end of 2019, there was a pandemic that originated in Wuhan, China. This pandemic is known as the corona virus / COVID-19. COVID-19 itself is caused by SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2). In Indonesia alone, COVID-19 cases have reached 1.17 million and those who died have reached 31,976 people. From this case, experts are racing to find this COVID-19 vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccine itself is expected to control the spread of the virus in the world. This review article aims to discuss the various types of vaccines that will be used in Indonesia in terms of types, methods of action, efficacy, specificity, sensitivity, dosage, and side effects. The results of the review article show that vaccines are one of the most effective and economical methods. Various studies have been carried out by several experts from around the world to develop a vaccine for COVID-19. Each vaccine used has the same goal, namely to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus which is currently still a pandemic around the world. Based on the results of the review article, it can be concluded that all types of vaccines have their respective advantages and disadvantages. Thus, the community will not feel worried and are more confident in determining what kind of vaccine will be taken.

Abstract

Indonesia's natural wealth is very abundant in the form of flora and fauna that can be developed as raw materials for medicine. Honey in Indonesia is very diverse from Sabang to Merauke. Different types of honey are influenced by regional origin, season at harvest, type of bee, type of plant source of nectar, way of life of bees (cultivated or wild), harvesting method and post-harvest handling. This study aims to determine the characteristics of forest bee honey and cultivated honey and to determine the potential of honey as an antibacterial in the treatment of infectious diseases caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia Coli bacteria. The materials used were Carisa honey samples from Wild honey [Wild Klanceng and Wild Cerana] and Cultivation [Cerana Cultivation], S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. The characteristic test method is in accordance with the Indonesian National Standard and the honey inhibition test against the growth of S. aureus and E. Coli bacteria using the diffusion method. The results showed that Wild Cerana (WC) and Wild Klanceng (WK) honey demonstrated higher water content, ash content, acidity and glucose from Cerana Cultivated (CC) honey. Carissa Honey (beside Cerana cultivated honey) had antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. Coli at different concentrations. Wild Wild Honey has the highest antibacterial activity compared to other types of honey. Conclusion Indonesian wild honey showed weak antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Meanwhile, honey that is cultivated does not have antibacterial activity.

Abstract

Introductions: Oral candidiasis is most often caused by Candida albicans, followed by C. glabrata. In European countries, an analysis showed that more than half of candidiasis cases were caused by C. albicans and the infection rate caused by other candida strains was 14% for C. glabrata and C. parapsilosis, 7% for C. tropicalis and 2% for C. krusei. According to a study in Brazil, C. albicans accounted for 40.9% of cases followed by C. tropicalis (20.9%), C. parapsilosis (20.5%) and C. glabrata (4.9%). Meanwhile, in Indonesia, there is no national data regarding the epidemiology of oral candidiasis in Indonesia. Hospital Dr. Hasan Sadikin (RSHS) Bandung conducted research from 2010-2014 and found that during that period 49 patients had oral candidiasis. In general, side effects can be felt by patients who are in fixed orthodontic treatment which affects comfort and quality of life, namely 42.79% experience a sensation of pain in the area of the oral cavity, while 51.80% complain of discomfort when chewing food and this can indicate that Orthodontic appliances are mainly the patient's daily activities, the second is related to chewing food, phonetics and smile lines. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of candidiasis on orthodontic appliances. This study was to determine the incidence of candidiasis on fix orthodontic appliances. Material and Methods: In this study, 80 samples were obtained from the total population, namely medical students who use fixed orthodontics with metal materials. Methods with SWAB examination on the surface of the bracket and the oral mucosa that intersect with the ortho-adhesive device. The results were recorded and then data analysis was carried out. Then the specimens were put in a microbiology incubator for 48 hours at room temperature. If candida albicans grows on the petridish then it is assessed that candidiasis is present. Results: From the study, it was found that 80% incidence of candidiasis, 20% is normal. Conclussions: There is a high incidence of oral candidiasis in patients using fix orthodontics appliances.
