Abstract

Writing is considered the most challenging skill for language learners because they need a certain amount of L2 background knowledge about the rhetorical organization, the proper use of language, or the specific lexicon they want to convey to their readers. It is not uncommon for students who are English majors to find it challenging to hone this writing skill. This study aims to see the extent of students' writing skills in the English department and to provide some ways to improve their writing skills. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method with observations of students majoring in English. The results of the research found that students majoring in English who were tested showed that students’ writing skills are still inferior and have many mistakes. This research is intended for readers to see a good writing strategy to improve the writing skills of English majors. It can be enhanced with techniques for better writing skills, such as brainstorming before starting and asking WH questions.

Abstract

Writing is one of the most important skills that learners of English as a second language must master, especially for students and working professionals. Unlike speaking practice, when you write, you leave a lasting record of your language. This is because it reinforces the grammatical structures and terminology that educators seek to teach their students. Therefore, it is necessary to improve writing skills. This article discusses various effective strategies and techniques to improve writing skills in English. The method used in this journal is library research, collecting data by finding sources and reconstructing them from various sources such as books, and existing research. This article discusses the importance of strong writing skills in today's globalized world and offers practical advice for individuals who want to improve their proficiency. By reading this article, readers can develop their English writing skills and gain the confidence needed to communicate effectively in academic and professional contexts.

Abstract

In the Acehnese community, childbirth holds sacred significance. This sacredness is reflected in specific rituals to introduce a newborn to the world. These rituals are seen as both a continuation of the Prophet Muhammad's actions and a way to maintain communication and exchange across generations. The rituals not only honor the birthing process but also provide physical and mental support to the mother after childbirth. This study focuses on the specific ritual of bathing a newborn baby, practised in the village of Blangporoh, South Aceh. Using interviews and field observations, the study reveals that this ritual continues to serve as a symbolic gesture of welcoming and integrating the baby into society. Additionally, the tradition of animal sacrifice (Akikah) often accompanies the bathing ritual. The sacrifice (akikah) for "redeeming" the child for Allah was performed "as one would redeem mortgaged land" after the ritual bathing. The guardians are in the red to Allah for a child, and this penance counterbalanced that obligation. Additionally, it established a bond between the child's parents. The author emphasizes the crucial role both rituals play in introducing the baby to the community's socio-cultural values from the very beginning of life.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate two customary funerals conducted by the Dane-zaa First Nation of Northeastern British Columbia, known as the Doig River First Nation. Both funerals included a lot of drumming, singing, and dancing around the fire in keeping with the Dane-zaa custom. Still, there was one key distinction between the two rituals. The funeral held in 2019 for Janice Askoty was a hybrid service that included a Christian liturgy and customary rituals. Such a ritual highlighted the conflicts that already existed among community members over faith and belief systems. There were no conflicts throughout the Christian service that was part of Annie Oker's 2020 funeral. In this paper, the researcher use the notion of syncretism and my observations to illustrate how Christian practices have been merged with indigenous cultural practices, symbols, and beliefs to create new blended practices. Simultaneously, the researcher highlight how certain customs (such as drumming, singing, and dancing around the fire) have endured to this day because they have not been altered by outside forces. Finally, the researcher discuss how the history of colonialism continues to show itself in funerary celebrations and how the community members view, confront, and resist it.

Abstract

This research aims to find out about the new house ceremony, specifically in the Batak toba custom, by exploring and documenting what is known as "Mambongoti Bagas" practiced by the Batak tribe, especially the Toba subgroup. Mamongoti Bagas is an important ceremony since the house is a sacred place for Batak people, especially when it is new. This ceremony takes place in the owner's new house, and the goods used can vary. The method used is to observe the Mambongoti Bagas tradition of the Batak Toba tribe. The results of the research show the celebration of the new house of the tobayang Batak tribe is also called "Mambongoti Bagas" The ceremony begins with respect in the form of local cuisine, "Namalum" (pork neck) to Tulang and Tondong, and they will give ulos to the owner of the house (Suhut), blessings (pasu-pasu) to Suhu, Boru, and Sanina give food namely manuk (dayok), batur manggoluh and rice to Suhut, then prayers and advice.

Abstract

This research aims to synthesize empirical evidence regarding the effect of bilingual education on students' cognitive flexibility, a key component of executive function. Cognitive flexibility is defined as the ability to switch between different tasks or sets of rules, which is theoretically enhanced by the necessity to simultaneously manage two language systems. This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, analyzing seven core journals (international and national) that discuss the correlation between bilingualism, bilingual education, and cognitive development, specifically cognitive flexibility, within educational contexts. The review results indicate a significant and positive relationship between bilingual education and enhanced cognitive flexibility. The dominant evidence supports the finding that bilingual programs provide an advantage in cognitive control tasks, as affirmed by global meta-analyses and studies in Indonesia. This advantage is believed to stem from the strengthening of the brain's cognitive control mechanisms, which are continuously trained by the process of cross-linguistic task switching. Although some inconsistencies related to moderating factors (such as the degree of bilingualism and participant age) were found, the findings overwhelmingly suggest that bilingual education should be viewed as an effective pedagogical intervention for optimizing students' cognitive development. It is recommended that educational institutions reinforce bilingual programs as a means of developing adaptive thinking skills.

Abstract

Bilingual learning is one of the strategies of higher education in facing the demands of globalization, particularly in improving foreign language proficiency and preparing students to compete internationally. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of implementing bilingual learning in higher education and identify factors influencing its success. The research method used is a literature review by analyzing various relevant scientific articles published within the last five years (2020–2025). Data sources were obtained through searches in academic databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, SINTA, and Garuda using keywords related to bilingual learning and higher education. The study results indicate that bilingual learning generally has a positive impact on improving students' language skills, broadening their academic horizons, and preparing them for the global workplace. However, its effectiveness is greatly influenced by lecturer competence, student preparedness, the availability of teaching materials, and a supportive academic environment. The main obstacles identified include differences in language proficiency levels, limited English proficiency among teachers, and low motivation among some students. Therefore, implementing bilingual learning requires a well-planned strategy, ongoing lecturer training, and the development of institutional policies that support optimal program implementation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the potential implementation and design a conceptual methodological framework for utilizing Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the context of bilingual English language learning in Indonesia. Stemming from the limitations of the one-size-fits-all learning model in accommodating the diverse proficiency levels and first language backgrounds of students, this study employs a systematic literature review and conceptual analysis as its primary methods, without involving field data collection. The results of the literature synthesis indicate that Generative AI, particularly through its capability to produce content, feedback, and interactive scenarios in real-time, holds transformative potential for realizing personalized learning on a large scale. The research proposes an AI-Based Adaptive Learning Methodology Design that encompasses three main pillars: 1) Rapid Diagnosis and Adaptive Learning Pathway Determination based on students' linguistic data; 2) Creation of Contextual Bilingual Materials (e.g., generating reading texts with controlled difficulty and cognitive assistance translations); and 3) Instant Feedback and Error Correction Systems Tailored to individual error patterns. The implementation of this proposed model is expected to serve as a theoretical guide for the development of language learning platforms that are more effective, inclusive, and relevant to the specific needs of bilingual students.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh strategi pembelajaran Crossword Puzzle terhadap hasil belajar siswa pada pembelajaran Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial (IPAS) kelas V SD Negeri 060883 Medan Tahun Ajaran 2025/2026. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas V SD Negeri 060883 Medan yang berjumlah 30 orang. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan pendekatan pra-eksperimental dan desain penelitian One Group Pretest-Posttest, di mana tes awal (pretest) diberikan sebelum perlakuan dan tes akhir (posttest) diberikan setelah penerapan strategi pembelajaran Crossword Puzzle. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan pemberian tes pilihan ganda sebanyak 25 butir soal yang telah diuji validitas dan reliabilitasnya. Data yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis menggunakan uji t (t-test) dengan bantuan program SPSS versi 20. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan nilai rata-rata hasil belajar siswa dari 53,6 pada Pre-Test menjadi 77,06 pada Post-Test, dengan tingkat ketuntasan klasikal sebesar 86,6%. Berdasarkan hasil uji hipotesis diperoleh bahwa strategi pembelajaran Crossword Puzzle memberikan pengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap hasil belajar siswa pada pembelajaran IPAS. Penerapan strategi Crossword Puzzle membuat proses pembelajaran menjadi lebih menarik, menyenangkan, dan meningkatkan keterlibatan aktif siswa selama kegiatan belajar mengajar.

Abstract

This study employed the ADDIE development model to develop an Augmented Reality-based Interactive Map learning media on the topic of biodiversity of flora and fauna in Indonesia for Grade V students at SD Negeri 104204 Sambirejo Timur in the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The research subjects consisted of 20 fifth-grade students, 2 expert validators to assess the validity of the media, and 1 classroom teacher to evaluate its practicality in IPAS learning within the Merdeka Curriculum. The validation results from material and media experts indicated that the Augmented Reality-based Interactive Map learning media was categorized as highly feasible, with high percentages based on content, design, and language aspects. The practicality test conducted by the teacher and students also showed that the media was highly practical for use in learning, as reflected in students’ positive responses with assessment percentages above 90%. The evaluation results revealed a significant improvement in students’ learning outcomes, as evidenced by the comparison between pre-test and post-test scores. The average pre-test scores were in the low category, while the post-test scores increased to the very good category after the implementation of the learning media. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Augmented Reality-based Interactive Map learning media is highly feasible and practical to be used in IPAS learning and is effective in improving students’ understanding of biodiversity of flora and fauna in Indonesia.
