Abstract

The land conflict between the residents of Pengudang Village and PT Buana Megawisatama (BMW) in Bintan Regency dates back to 1993, whenthe company offered compensation to local residents to relinquish their land at disproportionately low prices, accompanied by promises ofresidential plots and housing, most of which were never fulfilled. This imbalance triggered mounting tensions and protests from the community, culminating in demonstrations involving university students and resulting in repressive actions by security forces. This study aims to examine the root causes of the conflict in depth and to evaluate the effectiveness of various resolution efforts undertaken, including mediation and directinterventions by relevant stakeholders. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with informants selected via snowball sampling. The findings reveal that this conflict reflects structural tensions between local communities and corporate interests over access to and control of land, with significant social, economic, and environmental repercussions for the affected population. Despite the local government’s mediation efforts and land retribution initiatives.

Abstract

Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic threatens public health alone, therefore most governments in various countries in the world affected by covid-19 take steps in the form of mobility restriction policies to prevent the spread of the virus in the community this also applies in Indonesia. Restrictions on people's mobility make the problems experienced by the community more complex and difficult to control, the number of mass layoffs becomes a trigger for high unemployment in Indonesia. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. Data collection is done through an online repository, by filtering keywords in search; criminal acts of trafficking, women migrant workers, protection of migrant workers and handling of trafficking cases in the period of emigrants. Each author is tasked with collecting data based on search keywords. Based on the results of research, the high unemployment rate in the pandemic period became one of the main triggers for the criminal act of trafficking in persons. The situation of female migrant workers working abroad is increasingly complex because some of them are undocumented and some have been over-stayers. There are currently around 6 to 8 million Indonesian migrant workers abroad and the majority of them are women. Cases of human trafficking in the border region during the COVID-19 pandemic increased with economic mode. The closure of cross-border postal access is not effective enough in suppressing cases of trafficking at the country's borders. Various efforts have been made by the Indonesian government ranging from implementing policies to efforts to cooperate with various stakeholders — namely the government as regulators, policy makers, as well as law enforcement, and private parties as business actors / recruiters of labor and banking, as well as civil society institutions that are the driving force – to seek protection for Indonesian migrant workers abroad.

Abstract

This study aims to map the network of basic livelihood needs of the Suku Laut community in Penaah Village, Mensemut Island, Lingga Regency, Riau Islands Province, Indonesia. Basic needs such as food, clean water, shelter, healthcare, and education are critical in determining the quality of life for this small island community. This research employs a qualitative approach using a mini-ethnographic method to explore how the Suku Laut community meets its basic needs and understand its challenges, including environmental degradation, climate change, and modernization. Data were collected through field observations and interviews with traditional leaders, household heads, and women from the Suku Laut community. The findings reveal a high dependency on natural resources, which are increasingly threatened by overexploitation and the impacts of climate change. Access to healthcare and education remains severely limited due to inadequate infrastructure. Social networks play a crucial role in addressing these limitations, including utilizing fish buyer boats (sucheng) as intermediaries to procure essential goods such as food and daily necessities.AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk memetakan jaringan pemenuhan kebutuhan hidup dasar masyarakat Suku Laut di Desa Penaah, Pulau Mensemut, Kabupaten Lingga, Kepulauan Riau. Abstract

This study explores the transformation of community behavior regarding the use of hygienic latrines in Pengikik Village, a remote island community with historically poor sanitation practices. Inadequate latrine management contributes significantly to environmental degradation. Promoting the widespread use of healthy latrines, which are facilities designed for safe and sanitary human waste disposal, is a key strategy for improving public health. Using a phenomenological framework design, the research draws on data from six purposively selected informants through semi-structured interviews. The analysis employs Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s theory of social construction to examine behavioral changes. The findings indicate that 19 out of 53 households have constructed private healthy latrines, and eight communal units have been built with septic systems. Behavioral change occurred through three interrelated processes: targeted socialization and education by health workers, gradual internalization of hygienic practices, and normalization of latrine use in daily life. These processes have reshaped community perceptions, fostering a collective understanding of the importance of sanitary facilities in the community. As a result, the community has shifted away from open defecation and toward the consistent use of healthy latrines.

Abstract

This study examines the ancestral heritage in traditional medicine practices among coastal communities in Indonesia through a literature review approach. Rooted in local knowledge and spiritual beliefs passed down through generations, these practices involve the use of natural resources, particularly medicinal plants, alongside rituals and prayers that balance the spiritual and physical realms. Using a literature review method, this study identifies, analyzes, and synthesizes relevant research to gain a deeper understanding of traditional medicine, with data sourced from leading academic databases such as Scopus, focusing on English-language publications from 1988 to 2024. The findings reveal that traditional medicine extends beyond physical healing, emphasizing harmony between humans, nature, and spiritual forces. Despite the influence of modern medical practices, traditional healing remains integral to healthcare, offering alternative approaches to various health concerns. The study underscores the importance of preserving traditional knowledge through systematic documentation and scientific inquiry while highlighting the potential for integrating traditional and modern medicine to develop a more holistic healthcare approach. By deepening the understanding of the cultural and health values inherent in traditional healing, this study promotes its sustainability amid globalization.
