Abstract

Background: The prevalence of individuals with dental and oral problems in Aceh is 55.34%. One of the reasons someone neglects their dental and oral health issues is the poor perception of dental and oral hygiene maintenance. Malocclusion problems can exacerbate dental and oral hygiene conditions (OHI-S), hence the need for educational intervention for the community, especially students. Objective: To determine the relationship between the perception of dental and oral hygiene maintenance and OHI-S status in students with malocclusion in the Department of Nutrition at Poltekkes Kemenkes Aceh. Method: This study is analytical with a cross-sectional design conducted on 69 students from the Department of Nutrition at Poltekkes Kemenkes Aceh. Students were examined for their OHI-S dental status and given a questionnaire about the perception of dental and oral hygiene; the sample selection criteria involved students with dental malocclusion. Instruments used: diagnostic tools set, KSP OHI-S, and questionnaires. Results: The research shows that students with a good perception of oral hygiene maintenance dominate with a good OHI-S status, amounting to 22 (51.2%). Based on statistical test results, there is a relationship between the perception of oral hygiene maintenance and OHI-S status p=0.001 (p<0.05). Conclusion: It can be concluded that the perception of oral hygiene influences the OHI-S status in patients with dental malocclusion.

Abstract

Oral health issues remain a significant challenge for children with special needs, particularly at the Special Needs School for Special Needs (SLB) in Aceh Province, located in Gampong Lamreung, Aceh Besar Regency. Initial observations indicate that 70% of children suffer from dental caries, with an average Oral Hygiene Score (OHIS) of 2.8, well above the national standard of <1.2. This condition is exacerbated by children's limited ability to maintain dental hygiene independently. The decreased quality of life of children due to chewing difficulties, pain, and lack of sleep has become an urgent need for this community service initiative. This activity aims to improve the dental health of children with disabilities through home-based dental care. The method used is a descriptive quantitative approach with an educational approach for parents, particularly mothers, through counseling, demonstrations of toothbrushing techniques, and three home visits over 14 days. The evaluation was conducted using a questionnaire through pre-test, post-test I, and post-test II on 20 pairs of mothers and children. The intervention results showed an improvement in maternal behavior, from 65% in the adequate category (pre-test) to 90% in the good category (post-test II). The children's dental hygiene status also improved significantly, from 100% in the poor category (pre-test) to 80% in the good category (post-test II). In conclusion, the home care approach has proven effective in improving maternal roles and improving the dental hygiene status of children with disabilities. It is recommended that similar programs be replicated in other special needs schools with ongoing involvement of schools and healthcare professionals.

Abstract

Based on the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas), more than 90% of early childhood children experience dental caries, but only a small proportion receive dental health services. The purpose of community service is to increase students' knowledge, skills, awareness, and motivation in maintaining dental and oral health. The program was implemented for four days involving 40 elementary school students. Activities included counseling on the importance of maintaining dental hygiene, demonstrations on how to brush teeth properly, counseling on the dangers of sweet foods, and motivation for regular dental check-ups. The results of the activity showed an increase in knowledge (85%), tooth brushing skills (72%), awareness of the dangers of sweet foods (65%), and motivation for regular dental check-ups (55%). Conclusion This activity shows that an interactive educational approach is effective in instilling habits of maintaining dental health from an early age.

Abstract

Peuniti Village is one of 10 villages in Baiturrahman District, Banda Aceh City, with diverse socio-cultural characteristics and a high prevalence of childhood dental caries. The initial survey showed that 85% of families experienced caries and children's dental hygiene was generally poor (PHP-M score = 38), far from government standards (<15). The purpose of this activity was to improve mothers' knowledge, attitudes, practices, and children's dental hygiene through the implementation of a home visit model of family dental nursing care. The method used was descriptive, targeting 60 children and their mothers as respondents. The intervention was conducted through three home visits over 21 days, with pre-test, post-test I, and post-test II evaluations. The results showed a significant increase in all indicators. Mothers' knowledge increased from sufficient to good (76,7%), mothers' attitudes from poor to good (80%), mothers' actions in assisting with tooth brushing from sufficient to good (83%), and children's dental hygiene status (PHP-M) from poor/very poor to good (93,3%) and very good (6,7%). This family-based educational approach has proven effective through interactive methods, demonstrations, and visual reinforcement. This activity also demonstrates the importance of mothers' roles as agents of change in children's dental care at home. In conclusion, the home visit model has proven effective in fostering healthy family behaviors independently. It is recommended for replication in other regions with cross-sectoral support to reduce caries rates preventively and sustainably

Abstract

Background and Objective: Patient compliance in undergoing dental treatment is a crucial factor for the success of therapy. However, it is often influenced by various factors, including psychological conditions such as anxiety levels. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether there is a relationship between anxiety levels and patient compliance in receiving dental treatment at Cut Mutia General Hospital, North Aceh. Methods: This research employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. Data were collected using structured questionnaires distributed to outpatients in the dental care unit. The relationship between anxiety levels and patient compliance was analyzed using the Chi-Square statistical test. Results: The analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between anxiety levels and patient compliance in undergoing dental treatment (Chi-Square value = 9.574; p = 0.008). Patients with mild anxiety exhibited a compliance rate of 64%, while those who felt calm showed the highest compliance rate at 84.6%. In contrast, patients with moderate anxiety demonstrated the lowest compliance rate at only 25%. These findings indicate that lower anxiety levels are associated with higher patient compliance in following dental treatment recommendations. Conclusion and Recommendation: The study concludes that there is a significant statistical relationship between anxiety levels and patient compliance in dental care at Cut Mutia General Hospital, North Aceh. Patients with lower anxiety tend to show higher compliance. It is recommended to implement psychological interventions, including educational approaches and empathetic communication, to reduce anxiety and enhance patient adherence to dental treatment procedures.

Abstract

Children’s oral health is significantly influenced by parental involvement, particularly maternal parenting practices in daily care routines. This study aimed to analyze the effect of maternal parenting within the context of dental nursing care on behavioral changes and oral hygiene status among primary school children in Banda Aceh. A quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group was employed. The sample consisted of 60 children aged 7–8 years and their mothers, divided into an intervention group (n = 30), which received structured education and supervised parenting guidance, and a control group (n = 30), which only received educational modules. Data were collected at three stages: pre-test, post-test I (immediately after the intervention), and post-test II (two weeks later). Findings revealed a significant improvement in mothers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding dental health in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the oral hygiene status of children, measured by the Patient Hygiene Performance-Modified (PHP-M) index, showed a statistically significant reduction in scores in the intervention group, indicating better oral cleanliness, while no significant changes were observed in the control group (p > 0.05). These results demonstrate that parenting-based dental health education effectively enhances maternal involvement in guiding and supervising children’s oral care, thereby fostering improved oral health behaviors and hygiene outcomes. The study concludes that maternal parenting approaches within dental nursing care have a substantial impact on improving both maternal dental health practices and children’s oral hygiene status.

Abstract

Dental caries is one of the most common oral health problems among preschool children, often causing pain, difficulty in chewing, and reduced food intake, which in turn may affect their nutritional status. This study aimed to determine the relationship between dental caries and nutritional status among children at Darul Imarah Kindergarten, Aceh Besar District. An analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted, involving 35 children aged 4–5 years selected using purposive sampling. Nutritional status was assessed through weight and height measurements using the Dietducate application, while dental caries was evaluated using the def-t index. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test with SPSS software. The study was conducted between April and November 2025, including several stages such as obtaining research permits, preparing informed consent, measuring children’s weight and height, calculating body mass index, and assessing dental caries using the def-t index. The results showed a significant relationship between dental caries and nutritional status (p = 0.003; p < 0.05). In conclusion, dental caries is significantly associated with children’s nutritional status. Therefore, parents are encouraged to pay greater attention to their children’s oral health by ensuring regular dental check-ups and promoting the habit of brushing teeth twice daily.
