Abstract

This research aims to analyze how Kathryn Stockett's The Help represents systemic racism and author's critical position towards the racial injustice issue within the novel. This research applies two theories: the representation by Stuart Hall and the theory of systemic racism by Joe. R. Feagin. This research applies a qualitative method with a narrative text analysis approach. The results of this study show that systemic racism plays a role in the level of labor exploitation, economic discrimination, social inequality, and oppressive social norms. Thus, the author's position also shows an effort to criticize the unjust system. However, she notes there are still some limitations since white characters are still central to hold primary control. This study concludes that literary works can function as a medium to voice social criticism of racism, while reflecting the complexity of the author's position in shaping representations of racial injustice.

Abstract

The Beji Antaboga tourist site provides a religious atmosphere full of tolerance by building various statues of religious symbols located in a forest in Banyuwangi. The harmony between humans and nature is very well maintained at this location. This nuance is supported by a fictional story that is believed by the local community, namely the Antaboga dragon. However, the place is fully taken care of by Hindus who are indeed attached to protecting the surrounding nature, and their commitment to guard several points of springs. This research aims to measure the inter-religious relations in the area and also to analyze the extent to which folklore as a discourse can be recontextualized as an effort to harmonize the bond of humans with nature. The research method used is qualitative, the first step applies the narrative structure of the story through actantial theory, the second is tracing the hypogram for the Antaboga story which dated back to Hindu’s teaching, and the last is looking at discourse as a power practice to recontextualize the harmonius reality. The finding shows Antaboga story is indeed to legitimise nature as the centre and not humans as the main actors.

Abstract

Film is a medium that represents various socio-cultural realities, enabling the visualization and depiction of social issues, one of which is the culture of patriarchy. Patriarchy is a term used to describe a social system where power, control, and authority are primarily in the hands of men or male figures. Patriarchy is a central theme in the film Kartini. Therefore, the aim of this study is to reveal and understand the hidden meanings that depict the visualization of patriarchal culture in the film Kartini. This study employs a qualitative research method, utilizing John Fiske's semiotic analysis approach. The findings of this research indicate that patriarchal culture is visualized through John Fiske's three codes of encoding, including 1) reality, 2) representation, and 3) ideology, demonstrating that patriarchal culture remains influential in affecting women's lives.

Abstract

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Google Translate are often used by students to help them to find ideas, write, translate, and even organize the ideas. These applications can support learning, yet many teachers have noticed that students are using them excessively. This study aims to look at university English teachers’ perceptions and responses toward students’ overuse of AI tools in asynchronous learning contexts. This study employed a narrative inquiry approach. The source of the data was five narratives from five university teachers reflected on real situations when they suspected students were overusing AI. The narratives were then thematically analysed to identify emerging patterns and emotional responses. The findings of this research highlight some emotional and ethical dilemmas that teachers experienced, the signs they noticed in student work, and the strategies they used to deal with the problems, and he strategies they employed to promote responsible AI use among students. This study also shows that teachers are trying to balance the use of AI as a helpful tool, not a replacement for learning. It also suggests clearer policies from the institutions, better digital ethics education for the students, and stronger support for teachers in today’s AI era.

Abstract

Henry David Thoreau is an American political and environmental thinker who echoed the transcendentalist way of thinking in his struggle. Transcendentalism seeks to eliminate subject-object relations in social practices that indirectly co-opted American thinking at the time, resulting in wars, slavery and the destruction of nature. His revolutionary thinking about transcendentalism was actually born through his consumption of eastern discourse, especially Hindhuism with its Bagavad Geeta. The disappearance of subject-object relations presents the perspective that humans are not subjects to manipulate nature as an object, eliminate social hierarchies such as slavery because other humans should not be humiliated because they are considered objects, and the government should not silence minority citizens who are not included in the majority count. This paper methodologically retraces all the Asian thought that anchors Thoreau's thought archaeologically, which seems to have been marginalised in the western tradition. The tracing of Asian views in the tradition of Thoreau's thought wants to provide an alternative that war, slavery and conquest are a betrayal of the ideals of freedom.
