Abstract

Children with mental retardation often experience problems related to dental and oral health, including periodontal disease, caries, and poor OHI-S this is due to an unclean oral cavity. In addition, parenting in everyday life can also affect a child's ability to maintain and care for his oral cavity. This study aims to determine the correlation between parenting pattern and ability to keep independent dental and oral hygiene cleanliness for mentally retardarded children at SLB-B Negeri Pembina Palembang. This type of research is an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. Data collection methods are questionnaires and observations. The research respondents were the parents of 100 mild mental retardation children by simple random sampling. Data analysis using Chi-Square test. The results showed that 55% of children's ability to maintain dental and oral hygiene was still lacking, and categorized in the poor category. 62.2% of parents with democratic parenting have children in the capable category. The results of the Chi-Square test obtained a value of P = 0.041 so that P < = 0.05. Thus, there is a significant relationship between parenting pattern and ability to keep independent dental and oral hygiene cleanliness for mentally retardarded children at SLB-B Negeri Pembina Palembang. The benefit of this research is to provide knowledge so that parents can apply good parenting and find ways to improve their ability to maintain oral hygiene independently, especially for mentally retarded children.

Abstract

Slow learner children are a group of children with an IQ of 70-90 who experience difficulties in adapting, responding to stimuli, and thinking. The impact of these barriers is the inability to perform self-care such as taking care of yourself and brushing your teeth properly. There are 14% of slow learner children in Indonesia and 80.64% of them have poor oral hygiene caused by improper brushing. One effort that can be done is to conduct counseling about brushing teeth using appropriate media, namely pop-up book media and hand puppets. The problem in this research is that the slow learner students' brushing skills are still in the bad category. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of pop-up book media and hand puppets on the teeth-brushing skills of slow-learner students. This type of research is a Quasy Experiment with a pretest-posttest design, with a population of 20 slow-learner students. The data collection instrument used was an observation sheet. The data analysis technique uses the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney test. The results showed that there were differences in the effectiveness of pop-up book media and hand puppets on the teeth brushing skills of slow learners grades 3-5 in the inclusion class of SDN Mojo III and SDN Airlangga I Surabaya City after 21 days of observation.

Abstract

Deaf children are children who have hearing loss. They have limitations in terms of communication and lack of knowledge, which causes bad behavior. Behavior in maintaining poor dental and oral hygiene causes poor plaque index values in deaf children. The problem in this study is that the plaque index value of deaf students at SDLB Karya Mulia Surabaya is poor. Plaque control can be done by mechanical and chemical means. Chemical control of dental plaque can be done by gargling. Gargling using natural ingredients such as binahong leaves and betel leaves can help reduce plaque because they contain good antibacterial and antiseptic properties. The aim of this study was to determine the difference in the effectiveness of gargling a solution of decoction of binahong and betel leaves on the plaque index in deaf children at SDLB Karya Mulia Surabaya. The type of research used was a pre-experimental design with a pretest-posttest design, with 51 students as research subjects. Methods of data collection by way of observation. The data analysis technique uses the Independent Sample T-test. The results showed that the betel leaf decoction solution was more effective in reducing plaque index in deaf children at SDLB Karya Mulia Surabaya than the binahong leaf decoction solution.

Abstract

Blind children are children with special needs who have abnormalities in the sense of vision that require services, both in terms of education and health specifically. WHO defines as visual acuity in healthy eyes less than 10/200 or visual field less than 10 degrees of fixation. There was a high percentage of oral hygiene in the poor category in blind students aged 12-18 years at SMPLB and SMALB A YPAB Surabaya. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using B-FRESH (Blind-Friendly Efficient Smart Hygiene) media on oral hygiene in blind students. This research is an applied research experiment involving 28 samples. The data collection instrument used was a plaque index assessment sheet and a tooth brushing checklist sheet. The data analysis technique used is the Mann-Whitney test. Based on the Mann-Whitney test, the results obtained P (0.001) <0.05. This value indicates H0 is rejected, so there is an effectiveness of using B-FRESH (Blind-Friendly Efficient Smart Hygiene) media on oral hygiene in blind students. The conclusion of the study is that there is an improvement in oral hygiene after being given B-FRESH (Blind-Friendly Efficient Smart Hygiene) media to blind students, namely from poor to moderate. This study has implications for the importance of tooth brushing practices in maintaining oral hygiene in blind students to improve the oral
