Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the utilization of sugar palm (Arecaceae) plants in the Acehnese community in Gandapura District, Bireuen Regency. In collecting data, this study distributed questionnaires, semi-structured and open-ended free interviews to various age groups with a total of 11 questions. The research sample in this study amounted to 153 people. The sampling method was carried out using the purposeful sampling method; namely, the population has homogeneous and stratified elements/members. Samples were taken based on age groups, namely young adults (aged 20-35) who are actively working to earn a living; middle adults (aged 36-50) who are generally married and have a permanent residence; and older people (> 50 years) who are considered village leaders/elders and have influence in the village. The results showed that 13 types of sugar palm plants were utilized. The utilization of 13 types of plants consists of 7 types as food ingredients, 7 types as craft materials, 5 types as building materials, 7 types for traditional medicine, 2 types for traditional ceremonies and 5 types of ornamental plants. To determine the utilization of plant species diversity, an analysis of the level of importance of a plant species for the community was carried out, namely by calculating the Cultural Significance Index (ICS). The highest ICS value was found in the Cocos nucifera plant, namely 293, followed by Areca nut (Areca catechu) and Areca nut (Arenga pinnata) with values of 113 and 111.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of implementing an Ethnoscence-based Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on improving the critical thinking and collaborative skills of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri Sungai Iyu on the topic of plant body parts. The research background is based on low student engagement, suboptimal critical thinking and collaboration skills, and the less-than-maximal implementation of contextual learning. The research method employed a Quasi-Experimental design of the Nonequivalent Control Group Design type. Data were collected through tests, observations, interviews, and questionnaires involving a sample of 32 students. The results indicate: (1) A significant improvement in critical thinking skills, with the average score increasing from 66.56 (31% mastery) to 79.53 (84% mastery). This is supported by a paired t-test (p=0.000) and regression analysis (Multiple-R = 0.871), indicating that the model explains 75.9% of the variation in improvement. (2) A highly positive improvement in collaborative skills, demonstrated by an increase in the average score from 26.63 (pretest) to 31.81 (posttest), with mastery reaching 84%. Significant test results (p=0.000) and regression analysis show a very strong relationship strength (Multiple R = 0.871). Observations and interviews illustrate that the PBL framework within a project to diagnose banana tree diseases fostered natural interaction, discussion, and role-sharing. (3) Student responses were highly positive; students were actively engaged and able to construct arguments based on a synthesis of scientific observations and local wisdom (ethnoscience), such as consulting with local farmers. The integration of PBL and ethnoscience effectively enhanced active engagement, appreciation for the relevance of science, and critical thinking and collaborative skills.

Abstract

Global environmental issues have become an important concern that must be addressed from an early stage through education. As the foundation of formal education, elementary schools play a significant role in developing students’ character and environmental awareness. This study aimed to develop an interactive E-Module based on ecosystem profiles for the Science and Social Studies (IPAS) subject, particularly on waste management material for fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 2 Dewantara. The data collection methods employed in this study included interviews, observations, and questionnaires. The research instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings revealed an improvement of 60% in students’ competency outcomes related to waste management material. Therefore, it can be concluded that the developed E-Module was effective in supporting the learning process in the IPAS subject.

Abstract

Human–elephant conflict has become an increasingly significant environmental issue in Indonesia, particularly in the Peusangan Watershed, Aceh, affecting ecological, social, and economic aspects of local communities. This study aims to identify the main factors causing human–elephant conflict, analyze its economic impacts, and examine community-based mitigation efforts implemented at the local level. The research employed a descriptive exploratory approach using an ex-post facto method through interviews and field observations involving communities in Pantan Lah, Blang Rakal, and Karang Ampar villages. The results indicate that the conflict is primarily driven by habitat loss and fragmentation, microclimate changes, resource competition, and negative community perceptions toward elephants. The highest number of conflict cases was recorded in Karang Ampar Village (53 cases), followed by Blang Rakal (14 cases) and Pantan Lah (9 cases). The economic losses resulting from damage to agricultural and plantation land were estimated at IDR 2,733,800,000, leading to decreased productivity and community welfare. Community-based mitigation efforts include patrol activities, elephant deterrence measures, and participatory mapping of elephant movement corridors. These findings highlight that a community-based approach plays a crucial role in supporting sustainable conflict mitigation.
