Abstract

The use of Bloom’s taxonomy to form knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and creation in choosing the type of reading test was to consider the role of higher and lower-order thinking skills in reading comprehension questions in English textbooks. The conceptual aspects of the reader's mental and visual response to the purpose of reading comprehension needs were the ability to generate new thoughts, separate ideas into parts, and judge the values of ideas by using appropriate criteria based on the text. This research contributed to the following questions: (1) the representation of Bloom’s taxonomy levels in English textbooks, and (2) the calculation of reading comprehension questions in each level of Bloom’s taxonomy. Using a qualitative approach with content analysis, the results showed that the types of reading comprehension questions could foster the student’s critical thinking regarding acquiring learning objectives in the English curriculum. Most of the question was focused on comprehension level (26%), knowledge/remember level (17%), application level (16%), synthesis level (14%), analysis level (13%), evaluation level (11%), and creation level (3%). By applying Bloom's taxonomy, English teachers were suggested to classify their instructional objectives and learning goals.

Abstract

This research investigated the dynamic relationship between figurative language and intercultural competence among university students engaged with BBC News broadcasts. The research focused on language acquisition and listening skills to explore how metaphors, similes, and idiomatic expressions could facilitate communication in diverse linguistic contexts. Guided by a constructivist model and serving in the dual roles of a United Nations ambassador and an English lecturer, the focus was on nurturing critical thinking and autonomous learning within a cohort of 23 English education students in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The primary objective was to emphasize the significance of English proficiency in fostering global partnerships. The findings revealed effective listening skill strategies, including selective attention, recalling prior knowledge, evaluating and repeating the phrases, and contextualization. These strategies yielded benefits such as cultural discovery, enhanced language comprehension, and empathy building. Observations emphasized the importance of background cultural knowledge, managing passage length, and addressing cultural competence topics. Understanding figurative language was essential for cultural students, enhancing creative thinking and fostering comprehensive global citizenship.

Abstract

Background. This study examined how positive teachers' behavior impacted young learners' engagement in elementary school. It focused on two main aspects: how well young learners followed instructions and how teachers delivered clear instructions during classroom activities. Purpose. The central question was whether observing positive teachers’ behaviors during instruction could boost young learners' participation.Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research analyzed the structure of positive instructions, including direct commands, questions, statements, and clarification requests through observation and recording. This research involved 8 teachers from an International Elementary School in North Sumatra and 24 young learners. Method. To ensure the reliability of the findings, this research used content validity and inter-rater reliability. The results provided a specific measure for evaluating elementary teachers' instructional practices through observation. It highlighted their abilities to manage classroom transitions and provide clear guidance to young learners during activities that can positively impact their academic motivation. Results. This research conclude the constructive instruction of teachers in lesson teaching  by combining social, communication, and emotional regulation skills through by calculating young learners' participation scores.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikanatihan teknis kepada guru SMK dalam pemanfaatan kecerdasan buatan (AI) melalui Chat GPT dan Canva untuk menciptakan media pembelajaran berbasis masa kini. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa (PKM) dengan pendekatan pelatihan praktis dan interaktif. Guru-guru SMK diberikan pemahaman mendalam tentang penggunaan Chat GPT untuk menghasilkan konten pembelajaran yang menarik dan interaktif serta penerapan Canva untuk desain visual yang menarik dalam pembuatan materi pembelajaran. Pelatihan dilakukan melalui sesi workshop, diskusi interaktif, dan praktek langsung untuk memperkuat kemampuan teknis dan kreativitas guru dalam menghasilkan media pembelajaran yang relevan dan menarik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan teknis pemanfaatan AI melalui Chat GPT dan Canva bagi guru SMK memberikan dampak positif dalam peningkatan kualitas media pembelajaran berbasis masa kini. Guru-guru dapat menghasilkan materi pembelajaran yang lebih menarik, interaktif, dan visual yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan dan minat siswa. Dengan penerapan AI dan desain visual yang kreatif, pembelajaran menjadi lebih dinamis dan memikat, meningkatkan daya tarik dan efektivitas pembelajaran. Pelatihan ini memberikan landasan bagi pengembangan kompetensi guru dalam menghadapi tuntutan pendidikan era digital serta mendorong kreativitas dalam menciptakan pengalaman belajar yang lebih berkesan dan relevan bagi siswa SMK.

Abstract

This community service implementation explores the optimization of Duolingo application usage to enhance language skills among university students. The study investigates the effectiveness of incorporating Duolingo into the language learning curriculum and its impact on students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. The community service on aims to assess the application's role in fostering a more engaging and interactive language learning experience.  The study anticipates identifying the specific language skills that show improvement and gauging the overall satisfaction and motivation of students in utilizing Duolingo. In the implementation of this community service, utilized online methods through Zoom meetings to provide flexibility in terms of space and time, allowing greater accessibility for participating students.The findings aim to provide insights into the potential of leveraging technology, particularly the Duolingo application, as a supplementary tool for language education in a university setting. The conclusion a contribution to the ongoing discourse on innovative language teaching methods and their impact on the academic performance and language proficiency of university students.

Abstract

The Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy, introduced by the Indonesian government in 2020 under Regulation No. 3/2020, aimed to address the mismatch between graduate job readiness and industry demands by enhancing both technical and personal competencies among students. This research evaluated the impact of the MBKM policy on English proficiency and graduate employability at Universitas Pembinaan Masyarakat Indonesia, using a sample of 16 students from the English Education Program. The mixed-methods research included a quantitative survey, qualitative interviews, and observation data. Findings indicated that the MBKM policy significantly improved English proficiency and employability by integrating transferable skills into curricula, providing work experience, and incorporating real-world English usage. Students reported enhanced communication, public speaking, argumentation, teamwork, problem-solving, and information management skills. The research concluded that the MBKM policy effectively bridged the gap between language education and employability, highlighting the essential role of English education in preparing graduates for career success and long-term professional development.

Abstract

Industri 4.0 merujuk pada revolusi industri terbaru yang melibatkan integrasi teknologi digital, otomatisasi, dan konektivitas data untuk meningkatkan efisiensi, produktivitas, dan inovasi dalam berbagai sektor industri. Konsep Industri 4.0 mencakup penggunaan teknologi canggih seperti Internet of Things (IoT), kecerdasan buatan (AI), analisis data, robotika, dan komunikasi mesin ke mesin (M2M). Dengan cepatnya perkembangan teknologi, beberapa pekerjaan tradisional mungkin berubah atau digantikan oleh otomatisasi. Siswa SMK yang memiliki keterampilan yang sesuai lebih mampu beradaptasi dengan perubahan ini. Fokus utama pengabdian ini Fokus utamanya adalah meningkatkan konektivitas antara peralatan, sistem, dan orang, sehingga memungkinkan pengambilan keputusan yang lebih cepat dan efisien. Tujuan pengabdian ini memberikan wawasan tentang pengalaman kerja akan sangat membantu seorang siswa SMK namun selain itu harus beriringan dengan skill yang sesuai di era Industri 4.0, maka dari itu pelatihan ini sangat menunjang dari segi jangka pendek juga jangka panjang. Metode pelaksanaan melalui virtual zoom dengan pendekatan metode ceramah serta diskusi interaktif. Hasil pelaksanaan pengabdian ini yaitu luaran yang diterima para siswa SMK setelah mengikuti pemaparan materi tingkat kesadaran untuk meningkatkan skill dengan kemampuan peluang kerja Internet of Things (IoT).

Abstract

This study investigated the prevalence and types of rhetorical fallacies in the argumentative sections of English education theses, despite overall grammatical accuracy. Drawing on Toulmin’s argument model, cognitive reasoning theories, and nexus-juncture analysis, three-fifty undergraduate theses from three universities in Indonesia were analyzed qualitatively. Common fallacies such as hasty generalization, false cause, strawman, circular reasoning, and either/or reasoning were identified and mapped onto Toulmin’s components (claims, warrants, backing, rebuttals). Findings revealed that students demonstrated competency in grammatical structures but often lacked logical consistency in their arguments which led to flawed reasoning that undermined their thesis statements. The findings recommended that integrating rhetorical fallacy identification into writing instruction could improve both the clarity and validity of student arguments. This study highlighted the need for focused pedagogical strategies to address both grammar and reasoning skills in argumentative writing to promote effective and persuasive academic communication in English education.

Abstract

Abstrak. Industri konstruksi di Indonesia menghadapi tantangan dalam hal efisiensi waktu, biaya, dan pengelolaan material, terutama dalam proses pengangkatan beton pracetak (precast). Salah satu masalah yang sering muncul adalah keretakan pada beton saat proses pengangkatan yang disebabkan oleh ketidaksesuaian alat angkat. Dalam rangka memberikan solusi terhadap permasalahan ini, dilakukan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat di PT. Gelora Konstruksi dengan mengembangkan penggunaan limbah potongan tiang pancang baja (steel pipe piles) sebagai alternatif spreader beam untuk proses lifting beton pracetak. Pemanfaatan material bekas ini bertujuan untuk mengurangi biaya, mempercepat waktu fabrikasi, serta menjaga kualitas konstruksi dengan mengurangi potensi keretakan pada beton. Melalui analisis teknis menggunakan perangkat lunak SAP2000, spreader beam yang terbuat dari limbah potongan tiang pancang dinyatakan aman dengan stress ratio <1. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan material limbah ini menghemat waktu fabrikasi dari 10 hari menjadi hanya 3 hari, serta mengurangi biaya pengadaan material baru. Kegiatan ini memberikan kontribusi nyata terhadap pembangunan berkelanjutan dan praktik konstruksi ramah lingkungan. Kata Kunci: Spreader Beam, Steel Pipe Pile, Efisiensi, Inovasi, Konstruksi

Abstract

The objectives of this research were focused on English teachers’ perspectives on learner autonomy and to what extent English teachers felt their learners were autonomous in online reading comprehension in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. These research questions were answered by using observation, interview, and Likert-scale questionnaire in the form of qualitative method. The sample of this study was 26 English teachers in 4 elementary schools and 5 junior high schools in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The results of the study showed some points on learner autonomy, such as: (1) the importance of learner autonomy, (2) the way English teachers promoted learner autonomy, (3) the challenges and responsibilities of English teachers to implement learner autonomy, (4) English teachers’ observation to learners’ autonomy in online reading comprehension, (5) learners’ activities in online reading comprehension strategy, and (6) English teachers’ preparation in online reading comprehension class. This research concluded that the degree of learners’ autonomy during the pandemic was higher rather than before the COVID-19 pandemic due to some reasons.
