Hedges and Boosters in Student Scientific Articles within the Framework of a Pragmatic Metadiscourse Mimas Ardhianti; Jimat Susilo; Asep Nurjamin; Eko Cahyo Prawoto

Abstract

The ability of students to edit scientific papers is still low, especially in mastering the use of hedge (fencing devices) and boosters (strengthening devices). Hedges and boosters are forms of expression of the author's attitude towards propositional content through epistemic modalities. This study aims to describe hedges and boosters in student scientific articles within the framework of a pragmatic metadiscourse. A qualitative descriptive approach was used in this study. The data used is in the form of editing words, sentences, and paragraphs in scientific articles editing courses. The source of this research data is a scientific article by PGRI Adi Buana University Surabaya students in 2022. Data collection techniques use documentation techniques and recording techniques. Data analysis techniques to identify hedges and word lists of boosters using the AntConc application built by Lawrence Anthony. Data that has been obtained from the AntConc application found the frequency of hedges and boosters in scientific articles. The results of this study showed that the use of modal verb hedges in the first position was 214 frequencies, followed by 59 adverbs of hedges, and verb hedges were 3 frequencies, while the use of booster in the first position was 202 frequencies, followed by adverbs booster of 63 frequencies, and booster verbs of 6 frequencies. This study shows that students ability to tendency to (1) use epistemic modalities in modal verbs, (2) tend to use more capital verbs that mean certainty and possibility, and (3) tend to use adverbs to mean epistemic modalities.

Abstract

Teachers have not been widely using quiz media in learning.  Meanwhile, students urgently need innovative media to stimulate their motivation to learn. This study aims to describe the effectiveness of Quizizz media in improving the ability to appreciate rhyme texts in junior high school students. The research method through classroom action consists of two cycles. Data was collected through observation and student ability tests. The subject of the study was a student of SMPN 1 Kedawung, Cirebon. The research instrument was essay test results in the form of appreciation of the text of rhymes assisted by Quizizz media and the results of observation during learning. Learning outcomes in Cycle I showed that students' average scores and completion percentages remained low, with only 15 (or 45%) able to achieve completion, while 18 (or 54%) did not. In the second cycle, out of 33 students, 22 (67%) achieved completion, and only 16 (48%) did not achieve it. The average score of cycle II increased to 72, with more than 67% of students achieving completion. Based on the results of data analysis, it was shown that quiz media could improve the ability to appreciate rhyme texts in junior high school students.

Abstract

Reading skills are one of the language skills that are closely related to other language skills. In fact, reading skills have a strong influence on writing skills. The problem that arises is that there are still many elementary school students who cannot read fluently due to a lack of reading ability. This study aims to pilot wordwall media in order to improve the reading ability of elementary school students. Wardwall media is a type of game that is allegedly able to improve the reading ability of elementary school students. This research is a type of classroom action research that is carried out in two learning cycles. The research was carried out on grade VI students of SD Negeri Tunas Karya. An instrument used to measure students' reading ability through a reading test. Some aspects used as guidelines for assessing the reading ability of elementary school students include (1) reading ability, (2) understanding of reading content, and (3) fluency in reading. Based on the results of the study obtained through two cycles, it shows that students' reading ability has improved This can be seen from the observation and work of the student group that has improved, where in the first cycle, the average observation score is 59%. The average test score was 81, while in the second cycle, the average observation score was 89%, and the average test result was 96. Based on these results, it can be said that wordwaal media is effective in improving the reading skills of elementary school students.
