Abstract

Traditional boats haves played a significant role in maritime activities such as fishing, transportation, and trade, particularly in Kepulauan Riau. These boats are typically constructed from wood, with hull designs passed down through generations. However, this traditional approach raises potential safety concerns due to the absence of standardized construction practices and compliance with maritime safety regulations. Reports of frequent accidents suggest that human factors and inadequate hull responses to wave conditions are contributing causes. This study aims to analyze the response of traditional boats from Riau Islands using numerical simulation methods. The analysis is conducted using Maxsurf software, particularly Maxsurf Motions and Maxsurf Stability, applying the linear wave theory approach to evaluate pitch, roll, and heave responses under variations in loading, speed, and wave direction. The results indicate that the boat’s intact stability and seakeeping performance meet IMO safety criteria (C1–C6) under both stationary and 6-knot speed conditions. The seakeeping evaluation conducted using Olson’s criteria under wave height variations ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 meters demonstrates that the vessel’s response consistently remains below the maximum permissible threshold. This research provides initial data and insights to better understand the intact stability and seakeeping characteristics of traditional boats in Riau Islands, particularly regarding their wave response behavior.

Abstract

The maritime industry generally recruits vocational graduates who possess specific skills, such as technical drawing and proficiency in Computer-Aided Design software. However, some vocational high school students still have limitations in industry-based drafter practice and the use of CAD software. This community service activity aims to improve the basic competencies of vocational high school students as ship construction technical drafters through structured CAD training. The activity was held at Politeknik Negeri Batam on 7–10 October 2025, involving 26 participants from SMKS Kartini Batam and SMKS Al Jabar Batam, consisting of students and accompanying teachers. The implementation methods included theoretical instruction, demonstrations, hands-on practice, simple industry-based case studies, and intensive mentoring. The training materials covered an introduction to ship construction, basic CAD usage, basic object creation, dynamic input, editing tools, orthographic drawing, dimensioning, templates, plotting, and an introduction to three-dimensional CAD. Evaluation was conducted through a pre-test, post-test, and participant satisfaction questionnaire. The results showed an improvement in participants’ understanding and basic skills in the field of ship construction drafting. Based on the questionnaire results, 95.8% of participants strongly agreed that the training materials were useful, 87.5% strongly agreed that the materials were relevant to their needs, and 87.5% strongly agreed that their knowledge and skills improved after participating in the training. Therefore, this training was effective in strengthening basic CAD-based drafting competencies and supporting vocational high school students’ readiness to meet the needs of the maritime industry.

Abstract

Indonesia, as an archipelagic country, requires the development of efficient and independent ship design technologies. This study aims to develop a B-spline-based computer aided design (CAD) program for modelling ship hull geometry from offset data and calculating basic hydrostatic parameters. The offset data are defined as fit points at each station and processed to determine the corresponding control points for generating B-spline section curves. The resulting station curves are then arranged along the longitudinal direction to form the hull geometry. Hydrostatic calculations are performed by evaluating the station curves, determining the submerged sections at a specified draft, calculating the submerged sectional areas, and integrating them along the ship length. The calculated parameters include submerged volume, displacement, Longitudinal Center of Buoyancy (LCB), Length of Waterline (LWL), and Waterplane Area (WPA). The developed program is validated using a ship model template from commercial software by comparing both hull geometry and hydrostatic results. The validation shows deviations under 0.2% for the simple curve test and under 0.35% for the hydrostatic parameters of the selected hull model. These results indicate that the developed program has the potential to serve as a local CAD alternative for preliminary hull modeling and basic hydrostatic calculations.
