Abstract

The research aims to analyze the language attitudes of SMP Hikmatul Fadhillah (Hikmatul Fadhillah Junior High School) Medan students towards English based on attitude components. Data was taken from students of grade VIII, with 28 students selected from four different classes and seven randomly chosen from each class using random sampling techniques. The selection process involved teachers as informants based on students' relatively better English proficiency, identified through classroom observations. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method with data collected through observation and interviews based on techniques proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The results show that students generally exhibit positive attitudes toward English. Cognitively, they recognize its importance for future opportunities such as education, career, and global access to information. Effectively, they view English proficiency as a source of pride, and conatively, they show a strong desire to improve and frequently use English, supported by school regulations. However, despite these positive tendencies, some students experience negative feelings, including pressure and low self-confidence, particularly when facing challenges with English grammar. These mixed responses highlight the complexity of student attitudes toward English learning.

Abstract

Mandarin has been used as one of the subjects in Indonesia's schools including kindergarten/PAUD. However, many obstacles faced by the school. The lack of training and teaching staff of Mandarin for early childhood education moved the hearts of the USU Community Service Team to conduct Early Childhood Mandarin Learning training for pre- school educators in one of the Kindergarten schools in Medan, namely RA Ar -Rahmah. The method of this activity is intensive training with a blend of theory and practice as well as discussion and performance of the training results. Teaching Mandarin to educators is carried out with the principle of "Teaching Mandarin to young children" while still considering and respecting the position of participants as instructors who have different backgrounds and experiences. The training follows the principles of TCFL (Teaching Chinese as A Foreign Language) in the form of applicative and simple material through flashcards, folding paper, singing simple songs, how to introduce yourself, etc. The results of the teaching practice carried out were very satisfying and as expected.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many aspects of people's lives. In the field of culture, most of the younger generation ignores the nation's culture, such as traditional dances, and prefers modern dances due to globalization and growing social media. This makes the strategy of strengthening the traditional art group/studio (sanggar) important as a forum for developing creativity in traditional culture in Indonesia, especially North Sumatra. Therefore, in this community service activity, efforts have been made to strengthen sanggar to strengthen the local culture of North Sumatra. This activity was in the form of a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and dance training for 30 youth members of the sanggar Tortor Elak-Elak in Simalungun Regency, which was carried out for three months. In addition to providing training, the community service team has facilitated supporting equipment in traditional dance performances for sanggar members in the form of clothing, accessories, and other training media. The lecture, Q&A, demonstration, and drill method approaches are used in its implementation. This Community Service has produced outcomes in the form of services to raise public awareness of the local dance culture of North Sumatra with training assistance to increase creativity, innovation, and the ability of sanggar members in the field of culture, a namely traditional dance.

Abstract

This paper utilizes the Natural Semantic Metalanguage Approach (NSM) to explore the meanings of animal-related taboo names among the Acehnese in Indonesia. Through qualitative interviews with 12 respondents from Langsa City and Peureulak District in East Aceh, the NSM approach reveals two categories of animal taboos. The first, the taboo of swearing, involves offensive language equating individuals with animals like bui (pig), ase (dog), paee (gecko), muruwa (monitor lizard), and lemo (cow). The second, the taboo of fear, rooted in cultural beliefs, deems certain animals sacred and prohibits mentioning their names in natural settings, including rimueng (tiger), gajah (elephant), buya (crocodile), badeuk (rhinoceros), uleue (snake), and tikh (rat). Acehnese use alternative names to show respect, reflecting a belief that respecting nature facilitates harmonious living. The semantic primitive meaning of animals taboo for swearing involves a substantive component, a substantive relational of a kind, and bad as an evaluator. Equating humans with these animals is prohibited when their names are used in the context of insulting others. The taboo of fear is attributed to the animals perceived holiness and sacredness, with the semantic primitive involving something kind and bad. Acehnese believe these animals possess mystical powers and can hear their names when being called, hence suggesting the use of alternative names for these animals is preferable.

Abstract

As a national super-priority tourist attraction, Lake Toba must improve several facets of its tourism services, particularly the communicative practices of tourism service providers. This research examines speech actions within the linguistic register of tourism services in the Lake Toba region. In this research setting, comprehending linguistic elements and language registers, particularly pragmatics, is essential for advancing the Lake Toba tourism region. The research employs Austin and Searle's speech act theory to delineate speech acts. The dataset comprises speech actions from tourism services in Lake Toba, derived from three sectors: souvenir shops, lodging, and dining establishments. This research will significantly enhance the tourism industry in Lake Toba by providing insights that improve communication quality and tourism services, while reducing potential communication obstacles. The findings identify three primary categories of speech actions in Lake Toba's tourism services according to the theories of Austin and Searle: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. Locutionary acts provide fundamental information or pose inquiries, illocutionary acts include requests or directives for prompt action, and perlocutionary acts emphasize the consequences of communication. The roles of these speech acts—issuing commands, granting permits, offering ideas, and making requests—are essential for efficient service delivery and improving the tourism experience.

From the lexicostatistics calculation to the lexicon level, it is found that Mandarin Chinese (MC) and Japanese Kango (JK) are two different languages, because they are in a language group (stock) (29%); (2) JK and Indonesian Hokkien Chinese (IHC) are also two different languages, because they are in a language group (stock) (24%); and (3) MC and IHC belong to the same language family (42%).

Abstract

This study investigates the use of dysphemism in public reactions to news about incest cases posted on the Instagram account @CNN Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyse the types of dysphemism employed by netizens, based on Allan and Burridge’s (2006) theoretical framework. This study used a qualitative design with a descriptive model to analyze 155 comments posted on Instagram account @CNN Indonesia between January to May 2025. Data were collected through the observe and note method (Sudaryanto, 2015), then examined using Allan and Burridge (2006) framework of dysphemism types, applying both matching and distributional methods. The findings revealed seven categories of dysphemism: swearing and obscene language, non-derogatory profanity, comparisons between humans and animals, taboo terms, epithets, mockery of mental or physical conditions, and borrowed dysphemism. Among these, obscene language was the most prevalent type, comprising for 73.7% of the data, indicating that vulgar expressions serves as a primary channel for anger or resentment in public discourse regarding incest cases. This study shows that dysphemism is a crucial linguistic tool used by netizens to express anger and hatred in response to incest cases, which not only functions as verbal aggression but also as a social mechanism for channelling collective emotions in digital spaces. The results underscore the importance of fostering linguistic awareness through digital literacy initiatives, public awareness campaigns, and education programs in schools and universities, as well as by strengthening the role of media institutions in moderating public communication, particularly in societies with high social media engagement where language use profoundly shapes public moral and social norms.
