Abstract

Abstract. Syukur M, Sahid ZD, Sobir, Maharijaya A, Ritonga AW, Sulassih, Istiqlal MRA, Hakim A, Pangestu AY, Undang, Yudilastari T, Arandito DS, Ashar S, Hasanah A, Agustina K, Purwanto RJ, Karyani, Mustafa M, Syahri YF, Ramlasari C. 2022. Short Communication: Morpho-agronomic performances of bird pepper (Capsicum annuum) lines under varying agro-ecological locations in Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 4838-4843. Bird pepper price fluctuations are caused by an imbalance between production and market demand. One effective way to overcome this is to increase the productivity of bird pepper. Genetics and the growing environment of bird pepper greatly affect the productivity produced. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the character of yield and yield components of four genotypes of bird pepper at three lowland locations. Planting was carried out at three locations representing Indonesia's bird pepper growing environment. The planting procedure in all sites was carried out according to the same guidelines. A randomized complete block design (RCBD) was used with three replications. Twenty (20) plants per genotype were planted in each replicate, with 10 plants taken as samples. Shiara IPB had the highest productivity in all environments compared to the other line. The main characteristics that distinguish this variety had a purplish color on the fruit petals when young, and the fruit color was greenish-yellow. Hierarchical cluster analysis results showed that Shiara IPB in almost all observation variables based on legend color was superior. The highest productivity was found in Palembang, followed by Bogor and Kolaka.

Abstract

Abstract. Ishthifaiyyah SA, Syukur M, Trikoesoemaningtyas, Maharijaya A, Marwiyah S. 2023. Yield-related traits and proximate content of winged bean for seed production purpose. Biodiversitas 24: 3609-3615. The winged bean is an underutilized plant that can produce valuable seeds with great nutrient content. Meanwhile, the lack of improved genotypes limits its large-scale cultivation. This study aimed to evaluate the flowering and maturity time of winged bean lines and elaborate on various traits correlated with the seed yield. We also performed the seeds' proximate analysis to unravel each line's nutrient content. This study was conducted in Bogor, Indonesia, between April and October 2020. Hybridization between two distinct parents had successfully developed early flowering winged bean genotypes in its progeny. The H4P and L3 had the highest seed yield (1.40 t ha-1) with brown and purple seed colors, respectively. The dried pod weight (0.56), young pod weight (0.36), and the number of dried pods (0.39) had a positive direct effect yet were still smaller than their correlation coefficient. Thus, the selection process to obtain high-yielding winged bean genotypes can be conducted simultaneously through those traits. The evaluated winged bean genotypes had various fat and protein content ranging from 11.10% to 16.48% and 28.81% to 33.45%, respectively. This information can be used as future selection criteria for the winged bean breeding program.

Abstract

Abstract. Morizon, Nurrochmat DR, Maharijaya A, Putra PK. 2023. Developing a sustainable community forest management strategy in the mountainous areas of Tanggamus, Lampung, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4503-4513. The Community Forest (HKm) program allows local communities to legally manage forests to strengthen their rights and reduce conflicts over forest resources. However, the program has yet to be successful in achieving its goals. This study aims to provide recommendations for HKM management strategies. The research involved surveys, field observations, and literature studies. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling and data analysis applied qualitative methods, including triangulation and SWOT analysis. The study found that the social and institutional aspects of the HKM program were not functioning well, with poor relationships among members of the farmers' group (Gapoktan). From an ecological perspective, there has been a decline in plant species. At the same time, the economic aspect shows that only 15% of members benefited from HKM, leaving the rest feeling its negative impact. The study recommends institutional restructuring, coaching, and capacity building for human resources, implementing agroforestry and organic schemes for coffee cultivation, providing guidance on alternative crops such as cardamom, and optimizing the role of cooperatives within the group. Key players must actively participate in HKM management. These recommendations could lead to the effective implementation of the HKM program.

Abstract

Abstract. Sayekti TWDA, Syukur M, Hidayat SH, Maharijaya A, Sobir. 2023. Response diversity and traits related to pepper yellow leaf curl disease resilience for resistant plants selection. Biodiversitas 24: 5057-5064. Many chili species (Capsicum spp.) have been used and consumed, among them five species, namely Capsicum annuum, C. frutescens, C. chinense, C. baccatum and C. pubescens, are widely used. Most of these varieties are susceptible to Pepper Yellow Leaf Curl Disease (PYLCD) caused by Pepper yellow leaf curl virus (PYLCV) (Begomovirus, Geminiviridae). To control PYLCD, it is essential to gather resistant plant varieties to effectively shield cultivated plants from viral infections. An effective selection activity related to the target character is needed to get highly productive resistant plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between resistance characters to crop production and to obtain appropriate selection criteria to increase the effectiveness of selecting resistant plants with good production. This study was conducted at Cikabayan Field, IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia. Twenty-nine genotypes of chili pepper were used, which consists of four species, including C. annuum, C. frutescens, C. chinense, and C. baccatum, arranged in a nested block design with three replications. The observed symptoms were yellowing of leaves followed by leaf malformations, but there were differences in the yellowing symptoms. From observation on visual symptoms, resistance characteristics, plant performance and productivity, there were differences in the response of each species to PYLCV attack. Correlation and path analysis results show that there was also differences in performance drop between C. annuum species and the non-C. annuum group. In C. frutescens, C. chinense, and C. baccatum, direct selection on resistance characters was able to increase the resistance level of selected plants while maintaining good crop production. Whereas for C.  annuum species, the plant resistance level was not correlate with productivity reduction, so in the selection process, the percentage of yield decline needs to be considered to obtain resistant plants and maintain crop production.

Abstract

Abstract. Amrullah RA, Maharijaya A, Purwito A, Wiyono S. 2023. Unraveling metabolite profile variations among resistance and susceptible shallot genotypes related to anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides). Biodiversitas 24: 5113-5122.This study used a metabolomics approach to reveal the shallot metabolite profile under anthracnose disease conditions through GC-MS analysis. The aim of this study was to obtain candidate metabolite markers that differentiate shallot genotypes resistant to anthracnose. The results of non-targeted metabolite analysis with GC-MS revealed a shallot metabolite profiles of 54 compounds. The principal component analysis (PCA) model was conducted for reliable and accurate discrimination between uninoculated and inoculated genotypes. Four metabolites were revealed as putative biomarkers of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz. infection, namely linoleic ethyl ester, squalene, octadecanoic acid, and nonacosane. At least some putative biomarkers were applicable for early resistance genotype detection in shallot. These metabolites may help characterize pathogen infection and plant defense responses. This study confirmed metabolomics as a tool to develop a strategy to clarify the mechanism of plant-pathogen interaction. Furthermore, the data presented may be helpful to developing a new method for detecting shallot, that may be resistant to anthracnose caused by C. gloeosporioides.

Abstract

Abstract. Sayekti TWDA, Syukur M, Hidayat SH, Maharijaya A, Sobir, Agustina K, Mareza E, Wahyudi A, Supriyanta B. 2024. Performance and yield stability of cayenne peppers (Capsicum frutescens) in multilocation trials in the Indonesian lowlands. Biodiversitas 25: 3008-3017. Cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) plant breeding is becoming an increasingly interesting topic due to various usages. The diversity of uses of chilies needs to be balanced with high production and good product quality so that it can meet market needs. This experiment aimed to evaluate the performance and plant diversity of eight elite lines and six commercial varieties of cayenne pepper (C. frutescens) in three different environments. The development of location-specific superior genotypes can be guided to create varieties suited to the targeted environment. This study was conducted in three locations (environments) namely “Lampung”, “Yogyakarta” and “Palembang”. The experiment was conducted using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications for each location. Analysis of yield stability was conducted using three methods, namely “Francis-Kanneberg”, “Finlay-Wilkinson” and “AMMI” methods. Among the three locations, the Lampung location experienced a very significant yield loss. This is thought to be due to disease attacks on the plantations. Some genotypes are more suitable for planting at one of the test locations compared to the other two locations. However, there are two genotypes that are stable at three locations based on the three analysis methods used. Genotypes "F1.323340" and "F1.285290” were observed to be stable and produced well at all test locations. Both genotypes can be recommended for planting in lowland environment.

Abstract

Abstract. Kamaliah TL, Syukur M, Maharijaya A, Hidayat P. 2025. Short Communication: Oviposition and chlorosis scoring for early screening of chili resistance to whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). Biodiversitas 26: 6410-6416. Bemisia tabaci is a major pest of chili. The objective of this study was to establish a rapid screening technique for chili resistance, based on oviposition and chlorosis parameters. The research was conducted in the plastic houses of Sinar Alam Sari, Cibeureum, Bogor, Indonesia, from June to December 2021, using a randomized complete block design with three replications. Eight chili genotypes (Capsicum annuum cv. Adelina, Anies, C12, Kencana, Laris, Landung, Ungara, and Yuni) were infested with four non-viruliferous whiteflies per leaf in a no-choice test. The number of eggs and early instar nymphs was counted on the 7th and 10th days, respectively, while chlorosis was scored on the 21st day after infestation. Results showed significant differences among genotypes. Landung and Yuni were the most susceptible, with the highest egg counts (52.83 and 51.17 per leaf), nymph counts (48.17 and 47.50), and severe chlorosis (score 3-4). Ungara was highly resistant, with the lowest egg (9.00) and nymph counts (4.83), and minimal chlorosis (score 1-2). A strong correlation was observed between high egg/nymph numbers and severe chlorosis, which was objectively validated by RGB image analysis showing a near-perfect negative correlation between chlorosis score and the NGRDI (-0.995). The study concludes that combining egg count and chlorosis scoring—supplemented by digital RGB/NGRDI validation—provides a novel, simple, efficient, and reliable method for the early screening of chili resistance to B. tabaci, offering an integrated method of breeding programs.
