Abstract

Parking is a stationary state of a vehicle that is temporary in nature because it is left by the driver at certain places, whether indicated by traffic signs or not, and is not solely for the purpose of boarding and/or alighting passengers and/or loading goods. Parking facilities are an inseparable element of the overall highway transportation system. Many vehicles park on the roadway, which is caused by the available parking capacity being unable to accommodate the volume of vehicles, particularly regarding parking facilities. This study aims to determine the volume, duration, capacity, and development of parking spaces for two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles at Aek Godang Market. From the research results, it was found that the parking volume for motorcycles was 321 units and for cars was 60 units, with an average parking duration of 1 hour 28 minutes per vehicle for motorcycles and 135 minutes per vehicle for cars. The parking turnover rate for motorcycles was higher compared to cars. The existing parking capacity at Aek Godang Market for motorcycles is 162 SRP (Parking Space Units), while the parking demand is 250 SRP. Meanwhile, the existing car parking capacity is 30 SRP, while the demand is 54 SRP. Based on the parking volume at Aek Godang Market, it indicates that the parking space requirements for motorcycles and passenger cars cannot be met by the existing capacity. To add 88 SRP of parking spaces for motorcycles, a land area of 355 m² is required, while passenger cars urgently need an additional land area of approximately 180 m². The available potential land for parking development is located in front of the Aek Godang Market shophouses, which offers sufficient area. Keywords: volume, capacity, duration, development

Abstract

Pavement damage and standing water in the parking area of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Graha Nusantara (UGN) Padangsidimpuan indicate that sustainable infrastructure principles have not yet been optimally applied in the revitalization of campus facilities, while the national plastic-waste recycling rate remains low. This study aims to analyze the existing condition of the pavement, examine the potential of plastic waste as an environmentally friendly paving-block material, and design a mobile plastic paving-block unit that is technically feasible for revitalizing the parking area. The study employs an engineering-based research approach at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3, drawing on field observation, compressive-strength and water-absorption testing of four polypropylene (PP) plastic-waste mix compositions, and functional testing of the mobile-unit prototype across five production batches. The results show that the existing pavement damage ratio reaches 34.0% of the total parking area, dominated by standing water and alligator cracking. The PP:sand 60:40 composition yields a compressive strength of 15.6 MPa and a water absorption of 2.1%, satisfying SNI 03-0691-1996 Grade C for pedestrian walkways and two-wheeled-vehicle parking, but not yet meeting Grade B for four-wheeled-vehicle parking. The mobile unit achieved an average production efficiency of 87.2%, rising from 76% in the first batch to 92% in the fifth. This study contributes an integration of plastic-waste-based material innovation with a mobile, field-deployable production system, distinct from conventional approaches that remain static and laboratory-oriented, and provides a foundation for advancing to the next technology readiness stage.

Abstract

Padangsidimpuan City records traffic accidents concentrated on several road segments, yet mitigation efforts have generally focused on identifying accident-prone locations without examining collision characteristics. This study aims to rank accident-prone areas (black spots) using a multi-criteria weighting method, analyze collision patterns through collision diagrams, identify dominant contributing factors, examine the relationship between road geometry, vehicle speed, and accident patterns, and formulate segment-specific countermeasures. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed using 2021 traffic accident records from the Padangsidimpuan Traffic Police together with field surveys of road geometry and spot speeds. Black-spot ranking was based on casualty severity, road function, road status, and material losses. The results identified Jenderal Sudirman Road as the highest-ranked black spot (score = 49), followed by H.T. Rizal Nurdin Road (47), Abdul Haris Nasution 1 Road (35), Raja Inal Siregar Road (31), and Imam Bonjol Road (30). Collision diagram analysis identified head-on collisions as the dominant crash pattern, with Jenderal Sudirman Road recording the highest proportion (5 of 9 crashes; 55.6%). Human factors, particularly excessive speed and driver negligence, were the dominant contributing factors, reinforced by inadequate road infrastructure, including the absence of speed-limit signs, black-spot warning signs, and median separation. The study recommends speed management measures, installation of warning signs and rumble strips, median or centerline improvements, and implementation of a School Safety Zone (ZoSS) on school-front road segments. These findings provide practical guidance for transportation agencies and road authorities in prioritizing data-driven road safety improvements.

Abstract

Kenanga Road in the City of Padangsidimpuan is a primary collector road that functions as a convergence point for traffic flows heading toward the city's Central Business District. A previous traffic engineering study on this segment identified a Volume-to-Capacity (V/C) ratio of 0.68 with an average speed of 24.50 km/h, but did not evaluate the physical and structural condition of the pavement as a factor influencing road performance. This study aims to evaluate pavement condition using the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) and International Roughness Index (IRI) across ten segments spanning 1,000 meters, and to analyze their relationship with cumulative traffic loading expressed as Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL). The study employs a quantitative descriptive-correlational approach using illustrative data calibrated against real traffic parameters from the prior survey. The analysis reveals a strong negative correlation between cumulative ESAL and PCI (R² = 0.95), and a strong positive correlation between PCI and segment operating speed (R = 0.99). The segments with the highest cumulative loading, located near the convergence point with Tapian Nauli Road, showed poor condition and the most significant reduction in operating speed. This study underscores the importance of integrating structural pavement evaluation into urban traffic management studies to ensure more targeted road maintenance interventions.

Abstract

Road pavements in tropical regions experience accelerated deterioration due to high temperatures; intense rainfall; and high humidity; necessitating innovative solutions that address both infrastructure durability and environmental sustainability. This experimental study evaluates asphalt mixtures modified with polypropylene (PP) plastic waste to enhance performance under tropical climate conditions. Laboratory samples containing 0% (control); 4%; 6%; and 8% PP by binder weight were subjected to Marshall stability; penetration; accelerated aging (Rolling Thin Film Oven Test and ultraviolet radiation); and moisture susceptibility testing. Results demonstrate that 6% PP incorporation yielded optimal performance; with Marshall stability increasing to 14.5 kN (22% improvement over control); penetration decreasing to 58 dmm (18% reduction); and post-aging stability retention of 85%. Moisture conditioning tests revealed reduced stability loss at 13.8% compared to 24.4% for control mixtures; indicating enhanced moisture resistance. Economic analysis confirms cost savings of approximately 30% when substituting recycled PP waste for conventional polymer modifiers such as SBS. These findings identify 6% PP as the optimal dosage for tropical asphalt applications; demonstrating the technical and economic feasibility of circular material approaches in infrastructure engineering.
