Abstract

This study relates the discussion of discourse markers to their functions from a social context. It aims to identify discourse markers and analyze their function to construct a social situation in Steve Jobs’ speech delivered at Stanford Commencement Address. To analyze the data in this study, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. This study showed that the dominant discourse markers used were connective, followed by cause result, temporal adverb, and marker of response, respectively, in which the last marker was the least used. Furthermore, all discourse markers functioned to gain coherent message delivery in the speech by considering the “setting and scene," "participants," "ends,” “act sequence,” “key,” “instrumentalities,” “norms of interaction,” and “genre,” all of which were shortened in the acronym of “speaking.”  Finally, based on its social situation, the present study is expected to broaden the understanding of discourse markers in a particular text.

Abstract

The research focuses on the analysis of category shift in the movie of Joker (2019). This study has two aims, namely (1) to identify the types of category shifts that appear in the English-Indonesian translation of Joker (2019) movie and (2) to describe the use of category shifts of Joker (2019) movie texts on transferring messages from the source language into the target language. Descriptive qualitative method was used in study to analyze the data. In this study, Catford's (1965) theory of translation shifts was applied. The data source of this study was the Joker (2019) movie by Todd Phillips in English with Indonesian subtitles. Observation and documentation method were applied in collecting the data. The subtitle of the film was the object of the observation. The results showed that all types of category shifts presented by Catford were found in the translation. The structure shift occurred in the highest occurrence, consisting of 46 data (43,40%) out of the 106 data. It appeared because there were different classes and functions of the word between English into Indonesian. The fewest occurrence was class shift consisting of 17 data (16,03%). The majority of the class shifts discovered in this study is shifts from noun to a verb. Unit shift occurred 24 cases (22,65%). Most of the unit shifts found in the source language were transferred from words to phrases in the target language and intra-system shift occurred 19 data (17,92%) from the total of 106 data found. This shift was represented by the plural forms in English that were mostly translated into singular forms in Indonesian because, as it can be seen in the translation, the markers of plural quantifier were followed by the singular noun in Indonesian. The plural forms were shown by the use of them in the noun phrases.

Abstract

Poetry as a literary work may carry various messages of humanity and mental conditions. This study compares two poems entitled Reflection and Anxiety, which are inspired by psychological aspects of human being. The poems were written by Lang Leav, a female writer who gained popularity as International Bestselling Author through her poetry and prose. By applying the descriptive method in literary research, the comparison of the two poems’ narratives resulted in two findings. First, the similarities of the poems can be identified from the psychological themes expressed by distinctive diction, namely suggestive words, the use of parallelism and repetition to strengthen the expression as well as antithesis to delineate the contradictory situation. Second, the difference was identified from the psychological theme showing the feeling established in the poem. The poem “Reflection” shows that when a person can feel calmness, he/she is able to advise himself/herself to face various life’s obstacles. On the other hand, the poem “Anxiety” describes the psychological disorder that often exists and must be faced by compromising the weaknesses and strengths of anxiety.
